I had traveled abroad during my Junior year. Since I went to the southern hemishere the seasons were switched and their 'Spring' Semester lasted well into our summer. So I didn't have a job the summer between my junior year and senior year, thus I had no money when I was senior. So Sping semester my senior year I got a job at Ye Olde College Diner in State College, PA. The job was pretty lax, I worked a short shift on the cash register on Tuesday nights (maybe 4 hours) when nothing really happened. But because Ye Olde College Diner was a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week operation, everyone that worked there had to have a weekend shift. I was assigned the 12 midnight to 6 am shift with one other person (Jen) who worked slightly staggered. She never worked as late as I did (I usually told her I could handle things around 3 or 4) but it was alright, I would tell her she could go home. The problem was I was a student and had a normal scheduled of classes which ran until maybe 3 on fridays. The smart, responsible thing to do would be to sleep before my shift, but that was something that basically never happened. People were always going to Outback or doing something stupid that I wanted to do and I never went to bed. So I would pump myself full of caffiene and stay up straight through, usually 24 hours. The most surreal thing is walking home to go to bed when the sun has come up. It was the most exhasting thing, and it would take more than the weekend to get back on a normal schedule. But I graduated, got me degree and never looked back. I didn't even put the diner job on my resume because I had more relevant job experiences, and I kinda quit without any notice. So I didn't think I would get much of a reference from the folks that worked there. But getting out of college I just assumed that I would never have to work some sort of crazy overnight schedule ever again. But I've done a lot, frankly. Like this particular morning where i've worked 7pm - 7am (less than 2 hours to go!) along with a similar shift yesterday, making maps of disaster recovery in Florida because of the hurricanes. Good Times.
But That's life, right?
