Hey i think I broke my pinky toe I slammed it against an ottoman chasing a freakin dog and now it is all black and blue and hurts so much even with it just being there, hard to stand and walk and it is so freakin big.
I am asking for advice because 1) i once heard there was nothing to do for broken toes and 2) i do not have medical insurance right now, i just applied and still waiting for it to go through.
Any advice anyone has I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance :(

I can totally relate. Those big guys can hurt like a bitch. You just have to wait until your body adjusts to the size of it.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
When you break a toe, fractures can occur in one or more of the bones. Healing usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. If you still have pain at this time, you may need an x-ray to see how the toe is healing.
Causes
These injuries are almost always the result of an accident or fall.
Signs/Symptoms
It will probably hurt to walk. Other possible symptoms include swelling, pain, bruising, bleeding, weakness, numbness, or tingling of the injured toe. Because the break may move some bones out of place, the toe may look misshapen.
Care
Your doctor may order an x-ray and may give you a splint or a cast shoe to keep the bones of the toe in place. A cast shoe should make it easier to walk. Surgery may be necessary if you have a bad fracture. If you scratched or tore some skin, you may also need a tetanus shot.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
* If your toes are taped together, leave them that way until your doctor says you can remove the tape, or until your follow-up examination. You can change the tape after bathing. Always use a small piece of cotton between the toes when taping them together.
* To reduce swelling, keep your foot lifted above the level of your heart as much as possible. Lie down and prop your foot up on some pillows.
* Apply ice to the injury for 15 to 20 minutes each hour for the first 1 to 2 days. Put the ice in a plastic bag and place a thin towel between the bag of ice and your cast.
* Your doctor may have you wear a cast shoe if your foot is very swollen. If not, wear sturdy, supportive shoes.
* You may use over-the-counter medicines to relieve the pain. Always take medications exactly as directed.
* If you are given a tetanus shot, your arm may get swollen, red, and warm to the touch at the site of the shot. This is a normal reaction to the medicine.
Call Your Doctor If...
* The pain or swelling gets worse.
* The injured toe is cold when the others are warm.
* The toe becomes very swollen or red.
* The toe turns white or blue.
Seek Care Immediately If...
* The toe feels numb or tingly.

1. Tape the broken toe to the nearest largest toe. This will keep it from moving.
2. Take aleve (or some similar OTC pain killer - unless you've got some better stuff).
3. Wait it out (pain should subside within a couple of days - but it'll still be sensitive/sore).
4. Realize that no matter how much you love the freakin' dogs, they are probably just too fast for you. I recommend that you consider visiting a farm where they have slow moving animals that aren't all that bright and the faster ones are confined to stalls for at least part of the day.
Have fun you crazy kid.

The school of "no insurance or money".
I was pretty sure that if he'd had money for the emergency room, he'd already have gone.

ever hear of practicing medicine without a license????
I have heard of it, but I'm pretty sure that in order to practice medicine (with or without a license), the patient has to be charged for the service. Could be wrong though, because in addition to not being a doctor, I'm not a lawyer.
However, I never claimed that I went to medical school. He asked what is typically done when a toe is broken.
While I've never had a broken toe, I know 2 people who have and the taping of the toe was done in both cases.
In one case no x-rays were performed, and in the other, the doctor waited about 4 weeks when the toe was still causing quite a bit of pain. Then took x-rays to see if it was healing ok.
The guy doesn't have $$ or Insurance. So I gave him a temporary fix until he gets his card and then can go get it looked at.
I don't have a website, office, or any other overt/covert methods of distributing medical advice/information to the public in exchange for payment or services.
If I erred, it was in not explicitly stating that I was not a medical professional. However, Phish didn't ask that only board certified professionals respond.
On a related note, answering this type of thread is no more or less risky than answering a thread related to the emotional/mental state of someone. It's understood that in a public forum such as this that you will not be receiving advice or information for professionals. If you need professional services then go to a professional, not an internet message board.
My response might have been different if the question had been, "I'm worried about my foot, but I heard that the doctor can't/won't do anything for it. Should I still go?" I'd never discourage someone from going to a doctor or any professional they thought they needed to see.
But, as already mentioned, I took PhishHead's initial message as saying, "I'm not able/planning to go to a doctor until I'm covered via insurance. Any suggestions on what I can do in the meantime?"
Phis confirmed this as well.
So I don't know if the problem is that I
1. stepped on your toes (if so, my apologies - I didn't realize my response would be taken personally)
2. that I've harmed Phish with my response (apologies to Phish for not adding a disclaimer)
3. or that you have issue with me (not sure what I can do about that one, but PM me if you have some suggestions).
Regardless, good luck with the toe Phish.

I'm not a doctor but play one on TV. So my advice would be to rub the toe with witch hazel and apply a poultice of mustard and swamp mud to the afflicted area. Then drink heavily. Preferably Ouzo and Tang.
Good luck!

Yer right. And there's an entire branch of Medicine devoted exactly to theis; it's called First Aid.
Sadly, the vast vast majority of people on the planet dont have access to an ER, so the vast majority deals with it the way they always have; nature heals it, for better or worse.
The good samaritan laws have shown there are indeed times where it is indeed vital, to give that person medical aid, that instant.

First Aid is one thing and the Good Samaritan Law is another....the important thing to remember is that for the Good Samaritan law to work is that the victim must be "in imment danger"..whether they are bleeding to death, or there is a fire around you or some other danger....trust me..I know...as a former detective, we were well versed on this law. A broken toe doesn't come under the defination of "imminent danger"..I still advice the emergency room and maybe a compress of ice!!!

Option #2: Break your finger. You'll forget about the toe.

My parents always cut off whatever I hurt. They'd say, "I guess we'll just have to cut it off!"
I have 7 fingers left, 3 toes, one arm, and one and a half legs.
I didn't tell them about the time the toliet seat fell on my dick. They can't take that away from me!!!!!

heres what you should do. im not a doctor but im a mri tech. by breaking your toe you have just elevated your chance for arthritis when you get older. if you have no insurance you should find a clinic that has an x-ray machine on premise, this way you aren't paying the entrance fees for 2 places, because you are charged about $50 just to walk in the door. best case senario they will tape it up, worst case is they will have to set it. you might think its only your pinky toe and no big deal but think of how painful it is now and thats how it will be everyday if you get arthritis in that joint.
