Review : Hero http://www.browntownjohnny.com/index.php
If you see "Quentin Tarentino Presents" on the marquee, this could mean that it's a revival of some 'grindhouse' old flick but "Hero" (real title 'Ying Yiong') is a 2 yr old epic from China starring Jet Li. It is so far from a grindhouse movie as it can get, as a matter of fact I would call it a true arthouse movie. Director Yimou Zhang is a passionate movie stylist that has made the silver screen his canvass for beautiful strokes of color and landscape, an artist. "Hero" is the most beautiful martial arts film ever filmed, but not the greatest because it's not what the kung-fu fan wants. They want hard edged kickass anger, this is a Buddhist message movie about non violence and I liked it because it's a tough movie to make.
The characters are classic in this simple fable (with an epic look) about a nameless assassin (cool Jet) that comes to the ruthless emperor with the swords of his latest kills, the arch enemy of the ruler. As thanks to his valor, Nameless is allowed to come close to the emperor (no one is allowed within 100 paces). The ruler wants to hear his tales of heroism, but the ruler is on to his real intentions. Flashbacks to his friendships and their plot to kill, a love story about revenge and tolerance.
The action is very cool (in a PG way) but it's the same level as Crouching Tiger, and seeing Jet Li and Donnie Yen in a spectacular fight is way cool. Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung and Ziyi Zhang (little pretty lady from Crouching) round out the cast well but the real star is the cinematography by Christopher Doyle (Aussie does a lot of work in China) and the mystic 2nd unit work. More arrows fly in this movie than all 3 LOTR's movies. Which was my favorite fight scene? The yellow one! (see the movie to get the joke).

I'm so fucking sick of seeing the word "grindhouse" in a movie review. Just about every review of Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 had that word in it. I guess it was in the press release and every hack reviewer fell in love with that term.
Hero looks cool.
Has Quentin Tarentino Presented anything outside of a martial arts film or From Dusk till Dawn?
about a nameless assassin (cool Jet)
Do they "Bleep" his name?
Which was my favorite fight scene? The yellow one!
Is that a Jim Norton Joke?

I bought the DVD a couple of weeks ago for 25 dollars. It was worth every god damn dollar. The movie was awesome. As a matter of fact, I'm going to watch it again tonight.

Well, he didn't produce "Hero." This is along the lines of his old distribution company, Rolling Thunder, which he would use to give films he loved a wider release in America. Mostly old blaxploitation films, martial arts flicks, and Hong Kong shoot-'em-ups. Rolling Thunder actually no longer exists at this point, but it was funw hile it lasted...
Here's a listing of most of the films re-released under Rolling Thunder. (http://tarantino.webds.de/tarantino/store/index.php?id=rtpdvd)
Remember a movie released here a couple years ago called "The Iron Monkey?" Same deal as "Hero"...it actually came out in 1993, but QT picked it up and distributed it here for American audiences in 2001.
Here's a list of films that Tarantino has actively produced (Outside of the ones he's directed)...lotta dogs in there, beware...
Hell Ride (2006) (announced) (producer)
From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (2000) (V) (executive producer)
... aka Hangman's Daughter, The (2000) (V) (USA: closing credits title)
From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (1999) (V) (executive producer)
God Said, 'Ha!' (1998) (executive producer)
Curdled (1996) (executive producer)
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) (executive producer)
Four Rooms (1995) (executive producer)
Killing Zoe (1994) (executive producer)
... aka Killing Zoe (1994) (France)
Past Midnight (1992) (associate producer)
My Best Friend's Birthday (1987) (producer)

I thought "Hero" was very, very cool, but in the end a little unsatisfying. A friend of mine has had an imported version of DVD for months, and I watched it right before KB2.
Jet Li is terrific in it - he should not be allowed to do any more English language films - and the simple plot is perfect for the Rashamon-like narrative - all of which lends itself to the real reason to see this film, which is the spectacle. Especially on the big screen!
Rolling Thunder, which he would use to give films he loved a wider release in America. Mostly old blaxploitation films, martial arts flicks, and Hong Kong shoot-'em-ups.
In other words...grind house movies?!
haha!

Is produced and Presented the same thing? Which does it say in the trailer for the US release of Hero?
Was his name mentioned in the Iron Monkey movie?

"Presents" means he has the US distribution rights and is presenting the movie in theaters here. "Produced" would mean he had an actual hand in the funding and creation of the film itself. He did not. Same with "Iron Monkey." And yes, his name was on that like "Hero," too.

"Hero" (real title 'Ying Yiong')
If you're going to add trivia to your reviews, at least get them right. The movie's original title is "Ying Xiong."
And this movie has a huge use of color, but it doesn't register at all in your review. It's like ignoring the color red in a review of "The Sixtrh Sense."

Kinda, but not really. Color really plays inthe characterisations, i.e. costume colors to represent dreams, flashbacks, etc.

Just saw it. It was fucking spectacular. The colors play a huge part and they all look really good as well. I didn't pick up on what the colors meant of course, but upon seeing it again I could probably pick it up. The action wasn't what I expected but it was still very good.
