Top Scientists pick 'Blade Runner' as best Sci-Fi Film Ever:
LONDON : "Bladerunner" by British director Ridley Scott is the best science fiction film ever made, according to a poll of 60 of the world's top scientists to be published Thursday.
US director Stanley Kubrick's epic, "2001: A Space Odyssey", came a very close second in the vote, followed by the first two films of the Star Wars trilogy, "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back", directed by another American, George Lucas.
The other films in the top 10 were: "Alien", "Solaris" (the 1972 version), "Terminator", "Terminator 2: Judgement Day", "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "War of the Worlds", "The Matrix", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".
The scientists also voted for their favourite sci-fi authors, and Russian-born writer Isaac Asimov topped the list for his "Foundation Trilogy" and the novel "I, Robot" which has just been made into a film starring Will Smith.

Good list! I'd hit it.
Ignored the other MATRIX films, T3, JEDI - smart. I would have maybe considered ET, ALIENS and maybe even MINORITY REPORT.
Minor quibbles: BLADE RUNNER, 2001 and first SOLARIS are too high, imo; DAY EARTH STOOD STILL and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS should be higher.
Still - a good list.

Ok what about Ray Bradbury for an Author. I thought The Martian Chronicles was a great read. And that was was back in high school. Truely a classic. And where is Doug Adams? Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? Life, The Universe and Everything? Snubbed yet again.
I do agree with curtoid, I would think Close Encounters would be VERY high up there. At least higher then Matrix. Matrix (the original) was incredible but C.E. was still better storyline and ideals. I am glad they tied both Empire and Star Wars: A New Hope (Will these damn scientists ever get the title right??) Both were just classics.
With a list like that sitting in front of me in DVD format, I would have my whole weekend filled!

Adams' Hitchhiker books always just struck me as brilliantly funny stories that HAPPENED to be sci-fi. The guys they listed fit more into what makes me hate "real" sci-fi...obsessiveness over the fancy-dancy technologies and "wonders of tomorrow." It was clear Adams didn't give two shits about how anything worked in his universe...just that it did work in the end.

I'm surprised that Metropolis wasn't even brought up. It's one of the earliest, if not the first evil robot movie ever made, and it's visual style is still hauntingly beautiful. Besides this small gripe, I give the list a solid "Woot."

There's room for Minority Report on there, but other than that....the list is solid.
Didja notice that all these films are before the real dawn of CGI fx....NICE!
Their list of SciFi greats used mainlyly physical & mechanical fx. Good call.
The big CG fx movies end up looking like shitty cartoons and it takes the audience right out of the story.

Yeah Im digging the list too thats why I put it up. Blade runner does date itself, not much, but there are some lo-tech moments, but its cool with me, hell it was 1982. What he did with Alien in 70 was just pure fucking genius, ok genius is overused but in my list I'd put the one of the crew of the Nostromo at the Top, and would definately include also
Metropolis: The restored DVD is what Ive been waiting for ever since I saw it, its unreal.
ALiens: yeah Curtoid; actually the list I dont get, coz they lump two or three movies in together on some entries, so why not throw in Aliens. Completely different director and premise, but still, it continues to blow me away to this day.
I'm not sure on the Matrix sequels, coz to be honest, I didnt see them. And for some reason, I have problems getting past Keanu in the first. Its a personal bias. He still a Wyld Stallion to me.
AS to where Doug Adams is, is he a brit? Coz that might be one of those 'Huge in the USA, but wouldnt be noticed walking down the street in London' kinda thing. I agree though, ditto with Bradbury.
You know who wrote a lot of Sci-Fi? Edgar Allen Poe.
And The Alst Starfighter and They Live? I fucking Love those! Roddy Piper can actually calm down and act!
Godzilla [1954]; the original, without Raymond Burr added in afterwards as reprter Steve Martin, should be in the list.

Well, he would be noticed walking down the street in London cuz he's dead and all. Unless its the London of "28 Days"....then he'd blend right in.

I'm so with you.
"Hard" or "real" sci-fi often either bores me to tears or gives me a huge migraine. Adams at least made things fun & enjoyable.

I actually really enjoy the "Fifth Element"...it's very creative...but the last 15 minutes or so (As soon as the cruise ship blows up) are amongst the worst endings I've ever seen in any film.
Too bad.

Those movies are all great, even the ones I've never heard of, but what about that landmark achievement of speculative cinematic artistry ...
"SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS?" It's a Sci-Fi Film, It's an Xmas film! It's 2 ... 2...
2 films in 1, and Pia Zadora was HOT, even when she was 4!!! Plus the Air Force stock footage when they pursue the martians is the exact same footage used in the beginning of "Dr. Strangelove!"
