View Full Version : Good Computer Parts to Buy
JustJon

I'm looking to start retailing computer parts as part of my computer site, not looking to put together a pc. I've already started contacting some companies about purchasing from them, but I was wondering what things ppl on this site thought would be popular/get interest.
I'm not going to post my personal list, since I don't want to sway opinions.
And yes, I would be willing to help out RF.Net members when I start purchasing. :p

Video Cards, Mobos, RAM, PSUs, Cooling: Air, Liquid, and phase-change (maybe), "custom" cases and maybe Hard Drives but I'm not sure. High end shit.

Wow - loaded question. There isn't a lot of margin when it comes to most of the hardware out there.
Are you offering this as a matter of convenience to your customer (quick add-on) without expecting a large amount of profit?
Are you wanting it to be specifically items that go "inside" the pc, or are you looking at peripheral items such as wireless/lan routers?
How much inventory are you planning on keeping on hand?

I'm taking it you will be doing retailing and not actually physically holding the parts. If so, the following are all good parts that generally move pretty quickly provided you sell good name brands. I know this because one of my best friends was a reseller and these were among the things he sold that did the most for him.
Video Cards
Sound Cards
Hard drives
RAM
Motherboards (especially like ASUS..)
CPU
Cooling
Cases
Power Supplies
Cables (internal...IDE, SATA)
Firewire and USB 2.0 upgrade cards
You might want to look into things for modding systems though it's a niche market though if your successful at breaking through to that crowd a lot of the people who are into that and overclocking tend to be repeat customers. Most of those people are already aware that they need to be prepared to invest if they want to maintain a solid powerful system and make regular upgrades. As I said these folks generally aren't by any means a huge area that would earn you huge profits, but by and large they business is pretty much stready. For the most part hard drives, memory, mobos and videocards are very often replaced or die on their own so those are good items to start with.

Reef put together a pretty fine list. Pretty much most of the things I would be interested in.
Just try and keep away from the Chineese parts. No worky so good.

I'd go top of the line and grab one of those Packard-Bell 386 Babies. Right now at best buy if you buy one for $999 they will upgrade you from 1 to 2 MB of Ram. Windows 3.11 included, and the modem can go all the way up to 56K. Grab extra floppies.

Go ahead and laugh, Mike. I am still running a 386 laptop. (8 meg ram, 40 meg HD, and win3.11)
Using it to help run X-10 stuff, and play the occasional game of Wolfenstein.

Well, my plan is sorta mixed. I want to do combination of retail (having stock) and reselling (using other sites).
I want to focus more on real hardware. I've already applied to ATI for an accoutn and will apply to sell a few others to start (don't have tax id yet, so I'm limited till then).
I was going to start with a couple motherboard companies, video cards, lcd screens (not monitors, more on the modding side for internal case use or cars), and some cases. I think the first case manufacturer I'd want to start with would be Shuttle because their small form factor cases are popular with modders.

Jon, in that case I suggest you have the essentials I listed above stocked on you.
For the most part hard drives, memory, mobos and videocards are very often replaced or die on their own so those are good items to start with.
If you keep these items in stock you will always have someone who needs these replaced. Also DVD drives and burners are and have been hot items.

Something so I can hook up my VCR to my computer. I have videos I want to send out but no way to transfer them to Video-tape for my reel so I can get me a real job. My video card has some RCA outputs but I can never get them to work. I have had this thing for 2 years now and never had any luck with it.
Also maybe some Graphics Programs like Flash or Photoshop.

fluff, all you need is a video card with a TV-Out port
Also maybe some Graphics Programs like Flash or Photoshop.
I think I want to stay out of software for now.

Laugh? More like a tribute. I described my very first computer. Back then you could by a Packard-Bell, and I couldnt name another brand with gun to my head.
Q: Around what year would this have been? To really fuck you youngsters up, it came with an AOL v1.1 floppy disc.
=
The Packard-Bell was great, and I'm sure others here had one; anyone else remember the PB tech support? 'The average hold time is 6 hours 47 minutes... the next available...'
And to cap things off; with that computer I bought an HP Laser Printer; Cant remember the model, big boxy thing with like 6 square lighted buttons on the front. Black and white, no color. This is when dot-matrix was the norm.
Get ready for it...
Are you ready?
I mean really ready??
You know how much that printer cost?
You wanna know?
$1,200.00
OUCH! STILL HURTS ! ! ! !

IBM. Apple.
And that AOL disc doesn't fuck me up because I had an Apple IIE before there even was an AOL or Prodigy. Compuserve was erally the only large scale BBS back then.

Damn, back in the days I went from Compuserve to Netcom to MSN (which was free for a while) to a local ISP to Mindsping/Earthlink before I finally ended up with Optimum Online.

Jon the suggestions made by BJ and RD are great and cover everything but what I would want to see are some cpu and mobo combos. That would be cool. The rest would be easy.
