Does anyone know if this is true?
The more people in your area tha have cable modems for online service, the slower your actual connection is,

Yup.
100% true. Cable bandwidth is shared in your area which is why during peak periods you will experience slower speeds.
Telephone line service such as dial up and DSL do not have this problem.
Here is a quick read on it (http://www.cablemodemhelp.com/compare.htm)

Yes it's true. If you're just surfing the web, don't worry about it, you'll still get good speeds. If you're downloading loarge files, then you'll notice a difference.

yeah, unfortunately the gateway was a freebie ... it's what she's gonna stick with ...
Test Results:
Test file size: 500 KB
Download time: 1.54 seconds
Estimated line speed: 2597.4 Kbps
Estimated transfer rate: 324.7 KB/sec.
is the above good for a cable connection ...?

I think the amount of people per cable connection is basically the same. If 100 people live in 5sq. miles, as oppsed to 100 people living in 2sq miles, I think the same connection is devoted to them.
The signal error your getting might have somthing to do with your video card.

Use Cnet's speed tester (http://reviews.cnet.com/Bandwidth_meter/7004-7254_7-0.html)
It'll give you a comparison chart.

I don't beleive that they will ever catch on, like that TV thing!
But, when they work, they are the cat's pajamas, and when they don't work, they really really suck!
