Looks like their new LCD monitors with the CD/DVD drive slot on the side of the screen.

MAC has really impressed me over the years with some of the products that have come out with me.. I wasn't too excited about the iMac because of the cheesy shape and all but this computer is going to be really worth the money.

I'm definitely going to check this out in the Apple Store in Menlo Park Mall.

I customized one of these 5 minutes ago and I got a price of $2041.00.. yikes! :8o:

The only thing that worries me about things like this are what if the CD/DVD drive breaks.

I'm certain someone here will say that the Apple folks will replace it, and that's good and all, but if you depend on your computer for work or your business and now have to send it off for repair it kind've sucks.

This isn't a slam on Apple, but rather on these combo devices. As much as I like them and the way they look, I always worry if I had to do something important on it and the system goes out of service.

Reef, the iMac line isn't aimed at power users, it's aimed at the "regular guy." They couldn't fix it anyway and would have to send it out.

And thanks for adding nothing, Jezo.

when did jeff start telling jokes?

macs are ass.far too problematic, over-priced, and trouble shooting isn't as intuitive as a pc.

i've worked on macs, but these opinions expressed are by designers who own them.

Fine, let me add more then.. the Mac is an overpriced proprietary system with little or no room to upgrade. Software support is sparse compared to a Windows machine and they are overpriced compared to equal or faster Windows boxes. They are aimed at clueless rich people who have nothing better to spend their money on and people who are duped into thinking that as long as something is sexy it is worth the extra money. Even the arts and entertainment industries are moving away from them and getting cheaper Linux and Windows machines. They are not industry standards and all they have going for them are their looks.

Sort of like a really hot dumb blond girl who is all looks and no brain, which I guess I would want and show off to all my friends, which would make them think I was a cool guy and make them like me more, which would raise me up in the social status of the world..

Okay, that last part just ruined my whole argument. Gimme an iMac now!

I think it was a fairly Mac-ish world in the domain of Computer Music; Pro Tools, MOTU, Cakewalk, and M-Audio, and all the predecesors, it was first impossible, then rare to see a non-Mac; much of the software was just for Mac.

Users have been begging for Windows versions, and they are now getting them, but they often only work with top-o-the-line systems, and thats before ASIO Drivers and other compatability issues. Mac hardware and software was years ahead, some say it still is for a lot of digital and computer recording; it sure looks that way from the ads in my issues of Electronic Musician, Keyboard, and Hustler's Barely Legal. Ok not that last one. Maybe it was the Score Boob Cruise Issue...

Anyway, the touring guys will tell ya hands down, its still a Gx world. The big acts who use computers as part of the live act to control light sound, and of course make up for Britney's flat arpeggios use the Macs.

Of course, they should be shot for using computers in a concert anyway. Lights, ok, thats cool, but lay off the effects, peeps!

=

Having said that; the Korg Virtual synth I use works just fine and dandy on a Celeron chip running XP.

Yes that's both fine AND dandy, simultaneous-like...

Most commercial art and music software is written for mac and then ported to pc. The mac versions still run smoother and when "the arts and entertainment industries are moving away from them," it's the management who want uniform systems across the company, not the artists who actually use the Macs that want to move.

And comparing Mac and PC speeds is moot because they run off different hardware, that are utilizing different scales to quantify it.

But ultimately, the iMac line has never been about power users or upgradability. They're for people who don't know how to use computers well and just wnat something that looks pretty for them to check their email and surf the web.

I can give ya a big Rog on that. If yer a big artist; you're show is computer controlled to some extent, if ya like. Problem with live concerts is the complexity and sensitivity of all of this equipment, and you have iffy power supplies at the hall to deal with; and real shitty conditions, like a concert; not the best place to be running Digital Performer software. Long story short, theyre running dual [in Madonna's case] G5 systems; timing it all up, not sure if SMPTE is the standard clock anymore, and they run side by side during the show, and they check each other to see if one falters, so the backup can kick in, it's all very cool, and a nightmare for the tech, in Madonnas case Mike McKnight. He says theyve never failed.

I wonder if can say the same of madonnas voice, oh!

=

I watched Peter Gabriel late last year; each person had a laptop at their station, you could see the song part, in some weird color scheme, come and go. Very cool, and I was also like, doesn't Anyone NOT Play to a backup rhythm/incidental effects/ backup vocals, backing track? Ugh.

then you better let their marketing department know, cuz they wont shut up on the site about the 'sizzling' geforce 5200. if they wanna point out that UT2K4 gets 3x the framerates as the previous imac, fine. but dont use adjectives like 'sizzling' and 'extreme' to describe a card thats a few generations obsolete. cuz then you're just lying.

its definitely nicer than the lamp/vibrator, but packing all those components in that small space is just asking for trouble.
