I'm sure you've noticed this too. On probably one out of every three or four cars I see on the road are these huge ribbons that people are slapping on their cars.

Clearly they're designed in support of the troops overseas, but I don't really understand why they've been appearing on more and more cars of late.

The thing that most annoys me about it is that it appears to be the old "herd mentality" at work, where people will slap these suckers on their cars to be like others on the road. Almost as if, that if I don't have one of these stickers on my car that I'm not in support of the troops and that I'm unAmerican or whatever. To that I will not put one of them on my car. I am completely in support of the troops and I hope they return home safely soon, but does that really need to be expressed with a sticker on the back of my car?

i've seen them for breast cancer also. i went away to upstate NY(Lake George Region) at the end of July and that was when i first saw them. it was a small town and everyone had them. i went with about 20 family members and i'd say half left with the ribbons also. then slowly i started to see them when i got home, now i see them like you said all the time. i support the troops, but don't need a ribbon on my car to prove it.

I get where you're coming from on this and I just call them sheep. The whole Let's Roll sticker kind of bugged me way back when. Hey, I was all for what the passengers on Flight 93 did to try and save their lives and the lives of others but does it have to be put on a bumper ticker as a money making opportunity? I see the same thing with the ribbons which I too have been seeing a lot of.

Now the thing that just infuriated me to no end was not necessarily the whole wave of Patriotism that came after 9/11 and how the American Flag was waving from every window on evgery car but how those flags became torn, tattered and beaten and left for dead on the side of the road. Is there nothing more disrespectful to your country's flag (besdies spitting on or burning it) then displaying a torn and tattered flag and/or just leaving it on the side of the road? I remember my grandfather telling me there was some kind of honourable law with the flag that when it did fall into a state of disarray it was to be discarded properly.

I completely agree. I did have an American flag on my car following 9/11, though as it became weathered I removed it and actually buried it. I think you can even burn old flags, though I don't think I could ever actually do that.

Whenever I would pass a house or some place on the road that had flags on the side and they were left face down on the sidewalk I would actually stop my car on many occaisions and pick the flags up. I gave most of them away to other folks who were looking for flags at the time.

I'm all for ribbons and shit, but what pisses me off is when they become the "cool" thing. Like they're more of a trendy thing then actually for a purpose or cause. My case in point being those stupid yellow lance armstrong bracelts everyone is rockin nowadays.

i don't why, but it bothers me to end that you can buy them at the counter at 7/11 ... i don't know the proper store to purchase patriotic symbols, but it just seems off ...

the 'freedom isn't free' ribbon seems unnecessarily jingoistic to me ... you can be patriotic and wave the flag all you want, but you don't need slogans ...

i really like those european oval stickers that just reads 'USA', i'd really love to get one with 'NYC' on it ...

A flag is supposed to be burned. You can take an old flag to a local American Leigon or VFW post and they will discard it properly for you.

If I'm going to buy a ribbon from someone, they'd better be prepared to present it with style!

Flags on a car are supposed to be on the "upper left" part of the back of the car (Or the left side near the top/back). Anything on the bumper or even below the rear window is basically like dragging the thing on the ground.

i have seen cars with more than 2 ribbons on them..

usually there is a Yellow ribbon aand a red, white, and blue ribbon

it gets a lil weird seeing a car with more than one of the same ribbon on it...

eventually there will be a car with all yellow ribbons... why dont those people just paint their car that color then after a while

this morning i was on the lookout because of this thread. i noticed how many people actually have these ribbons on their car.

Fiesty - I also saw a few people with the yellow ribbon on one side, then the red white and blue one on the other side.

My only thought on this is that they must both be sold next to each other in whatever store people get these things from.

Is is breast cancer awareness month or something?

Mexican vans=few people.

There's a ribbon on my car. Well, my parents car to be precise. I actually mentioned how it seemed to be trendy and my dad said 'but I really mean what it says'. I don't know, I guess it's ok, as long as you aren't be trendy.

Now the livestrong bracelets bother me. Don't know why, but could be because every fucking teenager has one.

I hate it when the ribbons are turned sideways, so that they resemble fish. They're ribbons people-- NOT FISH.

Most of these ribbons are scams. They donate a "portion" of the cost to whatever cause is on the ribbon (or rubber wrist band), but the companies that manufacture them make big money. It's like those little plastic boxes on store counters that have pictures of starving kids on them. It always says "A portion of the money goes to charity". The rest of the money goes in the pocket of they guy driving around and convincing store owners to put them on their counters.
