View Full Version : Livestrong Bracelets=people are trendy & soulless?

So my brothers fiance gave me one of these bracelets, she ordered 10 for $10 off of the http://www.livestrong.org/altsite/index.html (Livestrong) website since her cousin is in remission for lymphoma cancer and my aunt is a cancer surivor.
Anyways, i was out this past weekend and had 2 people comment about them. The first was just general information, asking where & how i got it etc. Also leading into a talk about how she saw someone selling them on Ebay because they're the new fad or whatever.
The second, i was sitting at a friends house and a girl i had just met(friend of a friend type situation) said something along the lines of "Oh!, you have one of these bracelets too?..." . Where i just said yeah, my aunt had cancer blah blah blah, then she just looks at me and says she bought one because they are trendy.
I was kinda taken aback, i mean...i wanted to say that that's a pretty fucked up reason for wearing it and wanted to ask if she had got it off of Ebay but withheld seeing as i had met her not an hour prior.
I can attest to being superficial at times but that's pretty low in my opinion, to wear something with that kind of meaning behind it simply because it's the trendy thing to do?
Anyone?

I agree with you wholeheartedly. My wife wears one of those bracelets. Her sister, who we love dearly, just had surgery for thyroid cancer. So it means something to her.
Trendoids cheapen everything.

Forget the bracelet. The trendiness really cheapens things. (which is quite a shame!!)
You Cant go wrong with a St. Christopher, or St. Jude necklace. You can were it under your clothes so you are not advertising, but everytime you feel it, YOU will know and remember.

The first time I saw someone with the Livestrong bracelet on it was Lance Armstrong during the Tour de France. Then I saw Lindsay Lohan wearing one and I knew the message had been corrupted.

I started wearing mine to remember two co-workers who died of cancer within less than a year.
A lot of people wear them for the right reason.
Then there's the WHORES. Right after Lance won the sixth Tour, the bracelets were back-ordered.
WHORES were selling the $1 bracelets on eBay and getting as much as twenty dollars or more.

anyone who would copy some one else's style is just plain stupid. but that happens all the time.
I was at the mall the other day looking for shoes. there was 3 little kids (about 12) there talking. the one girl says "well my sister wore high heels to the town pool the other day so she could be like jessica simpson" i can bet her sister was no more than 13 or 14.
Just someone copyign someone else. Ignorant, maybe. But i can bet there are people who wear the red braclet that britney wears having NO knowledge of what the hell Kabbalah is.
I agree with you on this one, but I am sure there are a few people who are wearing these to be trendy and do not realize that they are being disrespectful.

That's what pisses me off the most though, you're wearing something...that you OBVIOUSLY see other people wearing, even with a little slogan on it and all but you can't even explore the meaning behind it before you decide that it's "kewl" and "pretty".
You're right that it's no different from the other things but i would expect that grown people, "adults" would have a little more depth than that.
Apparently i am sorely mistaken. Whatever, it's not like i could call each individual a fucking doucherag for it so it's a lost cause.

i really don't know anything about these bracelets, but i have a question about them.
does the money that it is sold for (somebody said $1.00) go to cancer research?
if it does, then i say let the ignorant trendy fucks buy em up and wear 10 on each arm.
but fuck the people making an extra profit on them.
if it does not, then yes the y are trendy and soulless and you should avoid these people.

Yep.
For me, the bracelets, almost all of them, like the ribbons on the lapel, almost all of them, cheapen things. If only because the vast vast majority who wear them dont really know shit, or worse, dont really care about said cause.
'Vast Majority' = celebs I see wearing the stuff. So the above is railing against the Pols and Trendoids and Fashionistas and other wannabes who stick one on just to be sure they look PC on camera.
Ugh.
This is quite different from those, regular people who did Not have celebrity, it was They who started the idea. Regular Joes who have friends or family suffering, or know someone who does, and who wear them as a reminder of said person, or to show support. This is wonderful.
I guess the tough part is in differentiating.
=
Truth be told, the idea behind the bracelet is that it actually, in some way, become a small annoyance to the wearer. Annoyance here means a tool by which something can be accomplished, by using said annoyance to bring one into the present moment, so that one could see what really needs to be done about said situation and do it.
Or, more simply, when a person sees a house on fire, they have two ways; they can grab a hose and start putting out the fire, or they can mail a donation in to their local station.
Flame away. Tis fine. I dont understand myself either.

Explore the meaning. I love it!
I'd use the phrase 'learn about it', but yours sounds so much cooler. If this sounds sarcastic, it's not. 'Learn About it' usually means Death to a student, as to interest level.

if people are going to wear these bracelets I HOPE it is because of the message behind them and NOT because JOE SHMOE is wearing them
its rare now a days to see anyone wear the AIDS ribbon- i dont know if its because the awareness is out there now or if it is because its no longer trendy- WHICH IS SAD
it seems now its been a red, white, and blue ribbon and/or a dove pin for 9-11 and war

Nike has been making bracelets like these for years but in different colors then yellow they have like blue, red and so on. Alot of NBA players have been wearing them for years and so have I when I play ball. The Nike ones have writings on them like baller, player, respect, and team.
If people want to be trendy and wear these bracelets just go buy the Nike ones instead of buying the livestrong ones.

My mother bought a bunch of bracelets, just before she was diagnosed with cancer, and gave them out to other people in our family.
I have the yellow LIVESTRONG bracelet, and a pink one that says "Share Beauty, Spread Hope" for breast cancer. And I don't consider myself trendy, although I wouldn't question "soulless" for other reasons.

I hate these things. I was seeing theses bracelets all over tv for months and i was wondering what the hell they were. i thought maybe its like the Kabala bracelet that was popular for a while . then i found out what it was and yuck it made me sick.
First of all most of the people that wear these things are just doing it to fit in/be trendy and its obvious . and if u want to donate to a cause why do u feal the need to let everyone know that u donated. its silly and obnoxiuos. its like those people that vote and then wear that "i voted sticker" or the people that give blood and wear that " be nice to me i gave blood" sticker. good for u , thats nice but why advertise the fact that your doing a good thing?
my cousin died of brain cancer and i think if u lost someone close to u it might help to wear this thing in honor of that person and their struggle with cancer, and its nice to donate to important causes but do it for the right reasons dont do it to get attention and praise.
also this trend kind of reminds me of when everyone (especially on tv/polititions) started wearing those little flag pins after 9/11. like u needed to wear something to let everyone else know u support/love the country. this is in the same sort of category i believe.
silly gooses

Hi dear friends,
This powerful bracelet is made from genuine 8mm hematite beads and natural citrine chips to enhance both health and wealth.
It strengthens lungs, liver, spleen and kidneys. Hematite also enhances logic, mathematical ability, rational thinking and depth of technical knowledge.
