After Amys party Saturday night, I was waiting in Penn station for my train and I saw this thing flying around, about the size of a cicada and it flew up and landed on a wall near me and it was a huge ass cockroach! Musta been 4 inches long and it FLEW! I looked at it in disbelief and got away from it as fast as I could. Anyone else ever see something like that? Are they common in the city or underground?

Welcome to New York City... These things are everywhere. I used to find them in my apartment, till we sealed all the holes.

When i worked at the Colgate Plant we had a cleanup job one night in the basement of the department that made bar soap. The base for soap was animal fat and there had been a huge spill where this particular pump room had areas where it was 2 feet deep. It had hardened like a gel or jello so you sliced it up with shovels and placed it in barrels. But there were dozens if not more of these large flying roaches all around us, on the walls, the floor, and the pipes and pumps. i felt a little skeeved but they didn't bother us

My brother worked there and they wanted him to go down the sewer with a pipefitter to do some work and he refused. They called my uncle who was Supervisor of the pipefitters and he couldn't get my brother to go down there.

My uncle 'before becoming a sup' had one crawl right across his glasses as he was working...

I remember the first apartment I had. It was a nice, completely renovated one-bedroom in the Bronx. The one drawback were the waterbugs. They were gigantic. My cats used to play with them and tear them apart. I'd find wings and limbs all over the apartment.

If that wasn't gross enough, one time I was reaching for something in my closet. I went on my tip toes and heard "crunch." I looked down and from under my big toe protruded a waterbug's head, its antenae still wiggling. My foot and leg went psychosematically numb until I could drag myself to the bathroom to throw up and douse my foot with alcohol.

I'm still skeeved out.

i forgot to mention a classic:

i had a friend Elizah when i was around 6 or 7 and he lived around the corner. one day i knock on his door and his older sister answers. I asked if Elizah could come out and she said 'no Elizah is sick, a roach bit him in the eye'

My first thought was "holy shit that's disgusting", my second thought was "roaches don't bite" and now what his sister said just makes me laugh...

Yea, then I flicked it and landed on PrJen's thigh. It was a priceless reaction from her.

I have these fuckers in my apartment...theyre not 4 inches long but definitely over an inch and a half. And they fly. Ive closed just about every opening in my apartment that I can find but theyre still here. And I hate killing them too cuz they leave this huge mess of guts and roach blood...bastards....

I chased a guy into an abandoned tenement once...He went down to the basement...Me and my partner followed...I had my flashlight on and mentioned to Paul "Why is the wall moving?" It turned out to be thousands of roaches crawling on the wall and ceiling and dropping on us...Christ, I almost took all my clothes off as we ran out of there..Oh yea..The fuck got away!!!!!

In my country, that is a delicacy. Here, it's considered a mess. What a country!

So a waterbug is also a roach, right? Jeez, if I had something like that in my apartment, Id torch the place! How do you live in it if they are around? Wouldnt it freak you out that they might crawl across your face as your sleeping??

Its not like my apartment is infested with them. I see one from time to time on a wall in the bath room or like sneaking out from behind the dresser. Theyre actually pretty slow so you could easily catch em with your foot if youre willing to clean up after...Im planning on buying a pair of steel toed boots just for roach killin...
