View Full Version : So, what's your XM setup?

*This is not an Opie and Anthony thread, nor is it a thread to bitch and moan about how you're not going to pay for radio. If you don't want to read about XM, you can click the back button on your browser now. Thanks.
I'd like to know...
1) What XM receiver you have...
2) How long you've had it...
3) Where'd you buy it...
4) How much you paid...
5) How you set it up, etc. Any and all pertinent information pertainint to XM.
I bought the XM Roady2 from Crutchfield. I had been looking for the Roady2 for a while, and I figured I'll use that for the time being. If like XM and I want to continue using it, I'll probably upgrade to the SkyFi2 when it comes out in a few months.
I paid 140 with shipping for the Roady 2. All told, it was a little more expensive than paying for it in a local store with tax, but I figured with the gas money I saved, it was a wash.
Currently, I have an EXTREMELY GHETTO setup for my roady. It's not even mounted, it's just sitting in my center console with wires hanging all over the place.
Once I get a better feel for the setup, I'm probably going to port the roady between my house and truck.
It took me about 20 minutes to get XM fully activated.
First impressions: Holy crap.
Satellie radio RULES!
There's just a ton of music on there. A TON.
Saturday night, I listened to the Nascar race, which was an experience in itself.
I have NYC and Philly traffic and weather at my finger tips, I never have to wait for traffic on the eights.
I'm a believer.

Well, I dont know crap about the XM system yet, but I do know Crutchfield, and I bought from them a lot. One of the best catalogs in the business. Great place.
And if the 'Ghetto' [?] set-up works well, that's one in the Plus column for toughness and reliability.

For a Roady2, do I need to get an antenna installed in my car or would a dashboard/built-in antenna be fine?

the little antenna that comes w/the roady 2 would be fine on your dashboard.
"holy Crap!"- my sentiments exactly. I don't how I went this long w/out satellite radio.
Got the Roady2 about a month ago from Best Buy... I was originally gonna wait until the end of sept and get for o&a's return.. but it was out of stock everywhere... i started getting a bit nervous about not getting it in time... so I picked it up on a shipment day... had them hold it for me.. it was $130 + tax... came w/a rebate for a free home kit that you connect thru your stereo (but i'd rather have a boombox).
It's pretty ghetto set up for me as well. I mounted it on my air vents above my regular stereo but the wires are all out.. it's all good though. won't leave it in my car alone... and the antenna i out in the passenger side corner of my wind shield.. donesn't move which is nice... but the majority of the cable is inside my glove compartment... works great though.

The Roady2 has a magnetic mount antenna. Placement varies on vehicle... I put it straight through my moonroof until I can get a more decent placement.
Probably once I get my home kit and I don't have to port all the wiring from point A to point B, I'll probably put in a permanent mount for the antenna.
<img src="http://www.chaoticconcepts.com/su/winamp3.GIF">
That's great. Say, how can I use that in my CAR?

Yeah, because that's soooooo much cheaper and efficient than using XM, you frigging tool.
Answer me this: How do I change channels?
Quit being a dumbass. YOU STREAM RON AND FEZ. WE GET IT. YOU ARE PLANNING TO STEAL O&A. WE GET IT.
Anyway.
I just ordered the Roady2, but I can't find a home kit for it. Anybody want to help me out with a link? I could always use the FM modulator to listen at home but I'd prefer if I could directly hook it up to my stereo.
The home kit is pretty much a high-gain XM antenna, AC adapter, and a wire to go from the Roady to your stereo.
Depending on your setup, you can buy most of the materials at Radio Shack as well.
I read about one setup where someone attached their CAR antenna (the home and Car antennas are different) to their refridgerator, which was located near a window. Since the XM antenna likes using sheets of metal as a conductive receiver for the signal (especially from the ground-based repeaters), this is an effective if not ghetto way of getting around buying the home antenna for the time being.
The AC adapter is readily available at best buy, where they have a multitude of generic universal AC adapters.
The wires, depending on your setup is also available at Radio Shack. The Roady's output plug is your standard mini-jack, like a headset. You can use mini-to-mini, mini-to-RCA, etc.

Tenbats' XM Buyers' Guide
A few people have IMed me lately about what kind of XM setup is right for them. I'll try to help out with this quick guide.
If you don't have a lot of money...
Your best bet is to buy a Roady from XM directly. They will sell it to your for 50 dollars along with a separate free FM Wireless Modulator - the drawback is that you have to sign up for 3 months of XM programming. O&A is not included, you have to call separately for that.
So, with this deal, you're spending about 80 dollars out of pocket. You then have to call XM back to get O&A.
Click HERE for Special O&A Promotion for XM Roady. The Password is OPIEANTH (https://xmradio.metrononline.com/xmpromotion/accesslogin.aspx)
Again, enter the password of OPIEANTH and click "Login". It won't work if you just hit return.
If you're looking for the newest technology with the second-least amount of cost
Your best option is the Roady 2. Sadly, the rebate deal for the free home kit with the Roady 2 has expired, so you have to buy a Home Kit for about 40 dollars, unless you use the "ghetto" method I mentioned above.
What's the difference between the Roady 1 and the Roady 2
Without using a lot of technical jargon, other than the updated equipment, the biggest difference is that the Roady 2 has a WIRELESS FM MODULATOR. This means that within a 5 foot range, the Roady 2 will broadcast the XM signal directly into a nearby radio, whether it's in your car or home. There's a selection of 10 frequencies the Roady2 will broadcast to, most of them on the low end (88.1, 88.3) or high end (107, etc) of the FM band.
Now, the Roady 1 deal offered above features a wireless FM modulator, but it's not built into the roady.
What's the difference between the Roady setups and the SkyFi setup?
Simply put, you need to buy more equipment for the SkyFi, which can be pricey. The SkyFi is being phased out, because the SkyFi2 is going to be released soon. (Estimates say mid October to November, but reports are that Delphi is pushing hard for it to be released before O&A's debut)
In order to use the SkyFi in your car and at home, you need to buy...
1) The Skyfi Receiver
2) The Car Kit
3) The Home Kit
(As opposed to the roady2, where you can listen to it in your car right out of the box, no additional materials needed)
All of those kits can go for about 200 bucks total, depending on where you get rebates and the best deals. Since SkyFi is now older technology, there are varying deals and rebates.
The GOOD thing about the Skyfi cradles and boomboxes is that they ARE backwards compatible with the Skyfi2. So if you decide to go the Skyfi route, you can buy the outdated technology NOW for about 70 bucks, wait a few months or so, and then upgrade to the Skyfi2 for another 130 if you so choose. Of course, that's a lot of cheddar to drop. Again, if the Skyfi is attractive to you but you want to listen to O&A, I'd still go with the Roady1 deal, then wait and get the Skyfi2 when it's out.
If you have any other questions, feel free to post them in this thread OR ask me directly.

I can see how Nascar could sound cool in the car but no offense to ANY NASCAR fans here but how can one listen to an auto race on the radio? All the NASCARilicious action seems lost. I occasionally hear a little bit cause the Phillies sometimes get pushed back on this one local bumble station and I have tried to follow it and it is just hard as hell. Now if I had pictures with that amazing sound, then we're talking.
The only other question I have to ask is what is the sound advantage of having XM compared to a CD collection. Storebought CD's, not burned copies. I tried a sound comparison with my friends setup and I could not tell the difference. The playlists didn't even seem all that let's say "special" either.
It is like half of me wants the XM/Sirius setup and the other half I don't. I need something to push me over that edge that will make it worth my while.

I can see how Nascar could sound cool in the car but no offense to ANY NASCAR fans here but how can one listen to an auto race on the radio?
Two reasons.
1) Nascar has two channels. PBP of the race AND... unedited In-Car Audio between drivers and pit crews. That's cool.
2) For a casual NASCAR fan like me, I'd listen as a stop gap while I'm in the car and can't be at the race. I went from work to a sports car, and I could listen to a bit of the race and have a good feel for what's going on.
The only other question I have to ask is what is the sound advantage of having XM compared to a CD collection. Storebought CD's, not burned copies. I tried a sound comparison with my friends setup and I could not tell the difference. [quote]
If you hardwire the XM receiver into your setup, you're fine. It takes a true audiophile to notice the main nuances. The dropouts under bridges are what annoy me.
[quote]The playlists didn't even seem all that let's say "special" either.
Frank's Place, Bluesville, and the Country Channels. I don't have a lot of Blues and/or country music, but having access to these streams have really turned me on to some music I don't hear on the radio. Also, the hardrock channels are good because it's that nice medium between the obscure stuff that Eddie Trunk plays, and the stuff you grew up with.
Also, they play a ton of live concerts. On the way into work this morning, I listened to Duran Duran in a show from 1989.
Over the weekend, I listened to a live Beastie Boys show.

The Home Kit that is offered may not be available in time for OA's debut. Crutchfield is saying it won't be in until 10/1, and I don't think the rebated free home kits will make it in time either.
I was researching the low-cost ghetto setup.
If you want to buy all the "standard" parts for a home kit, you can buy them separate from XMFanStore.com for about 65 bucks.
However, I've been doing some research, and you can get away with listening in your house for about 25 dollars, but I'm researching a "universal" AC adaptor that might save you another ten bucks.
The two things you ABSOLUTELY need in your house are an AC adapter (available at radio shack for under 20 bucks) and a high-gain XM antenna.
Apparently, you can use the mobile car attenna and attach it to a refridgerator or a cookie sheet - anything that has a flat, metallic surface - and you create a high-gain XM Antenna.
You can use the FM modulation on Roady2 to hook into your stereo, but only if you can get the unit within a few feet of your stereo. Otherwise, you can use an RCA-to-mini cable, also available at Radio Shack.

I haven't even tried experimenting with the XM antenna in my house yet, I still need to get the adaptor before I even start.
I'm going to start with a low-rent cookie sheet, and if that works, I'll move on to that IKEA deal.
The problem with the high-gain antenna is that it should be near a south-facing window. The signal has no problem going through plastic and wood, but does have issues with metal, hence why any "ghetto" setup may not work as well in an office.
I'll post results of my experimentation later.

I AM THE MACGYVER OF XM.
Home kit? I DON'T NEED NO STINKING HOME KIT!
Tenbats' Extremely Ghetto, Extremely Low-Cost, Extremely Easy Home Kit.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Step 1: Make sure you have a Roady2.
Step 2: Go to Radio Shack and buy a 6V, 800 mA Power Adapter. It's catalog number 273-1761. I bought mine for a little under 20 bucks.
Step 3: THe power adapter comes with a free "ADAPTAPLUG". The correct adaptaplug for the XM Roady2 is plug "B".
Step 4: Make sure all the polarities are correct. Talk to the guys in Radio Shack if you're not sure.
Step 5: Make sure you are familar with how the FM modulation on the Roady2 works. Long story short, when there is nothing plugged into the output jack on the roady2, it's modulating.
Step 6: Get a cookie sheet. Doesn't have to be a big one. I found one that was 6 x 10 worked fine.
Step 7: Attach the car antenna to the cookie sheet.
Step 8: Plug in the adapter and turn on the Roady.
Step 9: Tune your radio/boombox/etc. to the frequency your Roady is modulating to. Remember, the Roady needs to be within a few feet of the radio. The modulation is coming from the Roady unit itself, NOT the antenna.
Step 9a: If you're not going to use FM Modulation, you can also plug in a pair of powered speakers that your computer uses. The jack that goes into your sound card in the back of your computer is the same you can use for the Roady2. If you have a spare pair of powered speakers from an old computer, this is an excellent option for sound quality. If you don't have a pair of basic powered speakers, you can buy them from Walmart or Target for under 15 bucks.
Step 10: Enjoy.
Hope this helps out.

OK Ten, by *-rigging your Roadie to work at home, you are in effect stealing the signal that was only supposed to work on the "roadie". Why do you think they offer all of these accessories, at a moderate cost, for fun?
No they are entitlled to make a profit, and you, sir, are a theif!
Actually, I dig the McGuyver set-up, just playin' Devil's Advocate....
And breakin' your balls!!!

I just found out the Ski Fi 2 is coming out in a month or so.. will have pause and rewind functions on it.. will let you pause up to half an hour on live broadcasts and rewind if you hear a song you like.
I am waiting for that to hit the shelves before I get into XM.
HBOX.. ask here..

Got my roady2 today. pretty cool
And making a home setup for the roady isn't stealing or anythign like that. The kits are for those who aren't technologically minded enough to make their own. You're still paying for the service, so it's all good.

I think Hot Tub was using sarcasm, poking fun at my hardline stance against people who plan to stream. I can take a ribbing!!
The heat issue: I've noticed that the Roady 2 does get warm if it's left on for a few hours. I did some research at XM Fan and found that this is normal.
Your best bet is to turn off the Roady2 when you leave your car or you aren't listening to it.

so what's the diffrence between the skyfi2 and the roady2? they seem to have the same features, and they're the same price.

Roady2 is "all-inclusive" - you don't need separate kits for home and car. SkyFi2 you do. However, the advantage to SKyfi2 is a nicer display, and the ability to record.
Skyfi2 is the gobetween for the Roady2 and MyFi.

I have the roady2 along with the home kit, so I can listen to it at home or in the car. I'd like to do the same for when I'm at work as well.

well, i just got the skyfi with the car kit and the boombox for my desk at work. it took my a few minutes to get it up and running. I live in an old building, thick walls. So I went out to the car, set it up there, no problems. And I found the sweet spot in my aprtment, so i can listen home if I want to, but i think i'll be listening at work and in the car.
I must say I like it. i listen to alot of talk and news, and there's some great selctions. It was nice to hear O&A again too.

Got the SkiFi 2 last week and have it set up in my car with a homekit for my desk at home.
XM is wonderful.. makes the hour drive to work so much easier. I will have a hard time going back to FM now.
