View Full Version : AIDS!!

Where I work, one of my duties is to be an AIDS counselor...I draw blood, get the results and tell the patient how to maintain a stable life style...now, up to this point, all of the people I take care of have had AIDS for a number of years and that was no problem...Yesterday, I received the results of a 23 year old woman who thought she didn't have AIDS....well, she does....I had to call her into my office and try to tell her that she basically has a death sentence...I fumbled like a fool and she knew right off that it was bad news...she became hysterical and started to yell at me and hit me..I didn't know what to do..I just grabbed her and sat her back on her chair....she calmed down and thanked me for my help...I feel so helpless in these situations!!!!

The thing about terminal illnesses is the view on life that people who have been living with them for a long time often develop. I saw a roundtable discussion with people who were living with AIDS for a long time on Charlie Rose years ago. They were some of the most remarkable peoplel I had ever seen. I think in order to do that job, Reeshy, I'd have some contact with support groups, for yourself and for your patients. I think it might give you some ballance to your perspctive when you have to give a notification like that, where you are more or less going through the same suffering that the patient is. Just a thought.

Some 23 year old who took a rotten cock in her, while not making my day, does not make me feel bad at all. She knew the risks, sorry, you lose game over. And it aint like she has 6 months to live either. Magic Johnson looks healthy as a fucking horse. His Johnson must be magic because that mother fucker got H.I.V. (the ninja) 14 years ago! Mikey, in cheezeboy's defense, he wasn't joking or bashing. Just stating the distorted facts as he sees them (however incorrectly).
Taking a rotten cock isn't the only way to catch AIDS, and even if she did take one stray dirty cock, and got AIDS from it, it's not a reason to not feel bad for her. Noone has sex with the intention of getting any disease, let alone the HIV.
Sure, it's a little worse when a mother passes on AIDS to her innocent child. In fact, a lot worse. But, Reeshy isn't counciling those people.
I couldn't fathom being able to look a girl in the eye and tell her she has AIDS. Reeshy, don't leave that place, they need you there.
I'm sure you do this already, but think about if there wasn't someone like you, who actually cares bout these kids. Lets say it was Cheezeeguy there, you think that girl would get any support?
Nah.
Keep it up, go to meetings or see a shrink if you don't already.

I'll break a personal rule and get flamed for it, deservedly so; but this should be said.
You dont tell someone they have AIDS, because if you are doing the testing and getting results, you are testing for anti-bodies to the HIV Virus.
Testing Positive for HIV, and Having AIDS are two utterly, completely different things. People can have HIV for decades and show no signs of AIDS.
And it's not a Death Sentence. See above.

Yes tool, I agree that banging is not the only way to get AIDS. I did not think of the fact that she could be an intravenous drug user. My point is, if you live a responsible life style, your odds of getting this disease go down to next to nil. I feel horrible for people who live a "clean" life and God, for what ever reason, screws em by giving them some horrible disease that they had no chance of avoiding.

Fortunately, I've never had to give anyone the bad news regarding anything. But, I do have a few friends (one relative) living with HIV. The question I have is were you telling her she has AIDS, or HIV? I know to the person finding out for the first time it's soul crushing. But I imagine if I did have to let someone know, and they got histerical, well, I'd just take the abuse at first and allow them to vent. Then once he/she calmed, I'd let them know about the treatmens, and most importantly how effective they are. You know this as well as I do, but people with HIV can live a "normal" life for many years and can have sexual relationships.
But, yeah, it does hurt to have to empathize, that's the worst part of the job. But when you get that "thank you" it's what makes it worth it. Especially when you see people progress. That's why I love working in a rehab (not drug) hospital. Our patients are always making progress.

Excuse me,,,yea you did break a rule...But anyway, I can't counsel anyone on AIDS untio 2 MD's read the results...we didn't do an anti-body test..we did a t-cell test...her's were under 90...therefore AIDS...do some research before inserting foot in mouthe!!!!

You're post is very true, and I didn't mean to throw HIV and AIDS in the same kind of bucket, but, rest assured, if someone told me I had HIV, I'm freakin the fuck out.
Don't tell me about it not being a death sentance, especially not at the exact time I'm hearing the news. I'd DEFINATELY be freaking out.
I know you can live with it for a while, but we all aren't Magic Johnson. We don't have his money to continue to get the best treatment. We all aren't first class professional athletes with bodies built up for years to use as a defense.
Again, I'm not saying that HIV = buhbye now.
But I also know for a fact, I'd be losing my shit if Reeshy called me in

People are curious, chief. You call attention to yourself by creating a thread like this, and people are going to be inquisitive and question things.
Besides which, let's call a spade a spade here - a 23 year old smack junkie who probably had a habit of sharing needles got AIDS. In this day and age, she got what was coming to her.
Sorry folks. She ain't Arthur Ashe, Elizabeth Glaser or Ryan White. We live in a time and place that new infections (post-2000) are inexcusable.
The only way I feel sorry for someone who gets HIV are either through a blood transfusion or via a cheating lover who they thought they could trust. In other words, situations that they have no control over.
Harsh? Yes. But AIDS is one of the few fatal diseases in life where you have a TON of control if you contract it or not.
Besides, isn't there supposed to be some sort of patient confidentiality in the medical field?
