i pt the radio on this morning to listen to NPR, and they were playing 'rockaway beach' ... i thought what a way to start the day with a song written about yer hometown, but then i heard the sad news ...

what an eclectic group that saw him off ...

Along with his wife, Linda Cummings, Johnny Ramone was surrounded at his death by friends, including Pearl Jam rocker Eddie Vedder, singer Rob Zombie and others. Other friends who gathered at his Los Angeles home included Lisa Marie Presley, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo and Talia Shire.

Man - that really, really bums me out. Watching him shred through 60+ minutes was one of the highlights of my young concert going life.

Sure he could come across as a prick (he was the only Ramone to have yelled at me!), and I really didn't agree with his politics, but I had huge respect for him and his ability to (a) stand up and be a true non-conformist is a sea of phony conformity and (b) his determination not to let the band or the music become a political mouth piece - "Bonzo Goes To Bitburg" not withstanding.

Even though it sucks that they never got to see the kind of success heaped on the bands they influenced (and the bands that were influenced by the bands they influenced!!!), as we pass the 8 year mark of them having broken up, and now that 3 of the original members have died so young, it's amazing to see the respect they are receiving everywhere.

Last weekend I was amused to have seen at least 4 different people wearing "Ramones" shirts at the Baltimore comic convention - I saw at least double that amount at Ozzfest (?!) of all places this summer.

DC people - this weekend the Landmark E Street theatre is screening the new documentary on "The Ramones" that did all of the film festival circles last year. It's scheduled for only one week, but hopefully they will extend it.

When I first saw them, I had a week to go until I was 18. Springsteen saw one of these shows, prolly one a bit earlier then this; and was so impressed he wrote a song for The Ramones, "Hungry Heart". Yep, that one.

No! Johnny will be missed. Not only by me and the legions of fans of the Ramones, but also by the Republican Party. He was a lifelong, staunch conservative but open-minded enough that liberal stalwarts such as Eddie Vedder were counted among his close friends, even being there with him and his family as he passed. RIP Johnny.

When I first saw them, I had a week to go until I was 18.

Well, that's a little creepy! haha! The first time I saw them it was 1984, a week before I turned 18. I used a fake ID to get into the old DC nightclub "The Wax Museum."

My ears have been ringing to this day.

Johnny will be missed. Not only by me and the legions of fans of the Ramones, but also by the Republican Party.

Not sure if the actual party will be really missing him - individuals (like myself when I was young and a registered Reagan loving Republican; or Keithy today) loved to point to him as proof that the GOP was a big tent, but the truth was he wasn't a tool for the agenda - like a Ted Nugent. He was about making music. For the most part, only those on the inside would get the full brunt of his political opinions - if someone from the outside asked him for an opinion (which they loved to do, since a conservative world view appeared to run counter to what punk stood for), he'd gladly give it, but he was hardly a whore for the attention.

Which makes his loss that much more sad. He was his own man.

I saw the Ramones twice on the "farewell tour." One of the first shows was down at the Stone Pony, when the tour was first announced. 6 months to a year later, my friends from school wanted to see them (the tour kept getting extended at that point), so we went, and it was another amazing show!

Johnny will be missed!
