View Full Version : Listening to R&F again after a long hiatus

I admit it, I stopped listening to R&F for a long time because I didn't have an easy way to listen to them.

I've been listening again for the last few days, and I have a few observations...

1) Crazy Jen sounds like the polar opposite of Stalker Patti. Where has Patti was very slow-talking and quiet and timid, Jen sounds like she's on a continual IV drip of high-quality crank.

2) It's good to hear Tuttle again. Does R&F feature any other producers from NYC other thank Mikey D? Does Billy/Rory/Hawk/etc. call in from time to time?

3) Dubs is interesting... not sure why he gets so much hate.

4) It seems that Ron has gotten very, very angry. I was surprised how he talked towards Crazy Jen last night. He was never that way to the crazy/psycho cast members in NYC.

i'm trying to remember, except for staff (billy, al and wonderboy), has ron & fez ever have a character like crazy jen before ...?

ron's behavior to her (to a much lesser extent) reminds me of opie's antics with stalker patti, that limo driver guy and those 'retarded' women ...

Most of R&F's crazy characters were carryovers from O&A. Patti, the Retarded Laverne and Shirley... Lobster Claws was exclusively them, but I think that wasn't really a recurring character

Bingo. That's what I was thinking of. Very un-Ron like, IMHO.

Usually Ron is very nice to listeners/friends and not so nice to staff.

She is more staff than friend at this point. she is in all the time. its just the nature of their relationship.

Wow, it has been a long time since you've listened! As most fans of the show know, the character of "Ron" was previously voiced by Ron Bennington. Unfortunately, a bitter contract dispute prompted the veteran radio funnyman to abruptly leave the show in late 2003. The top brass at Infinity quickly replaced him with zany impressionist and "man of a thousand voices," Fred Travelina. This has ignited a passionate debate among fans as to who the superior "Ron" is. Travelina's thinly veiled rage towards all around him is clearly a result of him cracking under the pressure of trying to fill Bennington's shoes. Things got ugly recently when Bennington loyalists surrounded WJFK studios, chanting "Ron Hagar! Ron Hagar!," likening Travelina-era R&F to Sammy-lead Van Halen.

Fred Travelina.

Nice Reference! Wow I thought I was the only one who rememnbered him. Was there Ever a worse 'impressionist'? And wow, yer going back pretty far, at least in my opinion; I think some of the yunguns might give a big 'who?' to Mr. Trav. Except some distant memory has him with O+A doing his shtick and Stinking on Ice, and O+A just blowing smoke up his ass.

Next we'll be talking about Gary Mule Deer. Now that man was a Genius!

Ya know I would say the same thing, but for me it's Fez. The sheer glee he takes in putting down people; when he was mad about the lack of Smith Brothers Cough Drops he seriously sounded like that bitter teacher Everyone Hates.

But hey, angers always been a great source, maybe The Best source, for Comedy. Carlin and Pryor and Bruce? All the best stuff, for me, is when they are in a pure rage.

I think the reason why Crazy Jen is subjected to more ire than the other assorted nutsies that haunt the show is that Ron and Fez realize that she has legitimate comedic instincts and knows how to "go with a bit." If they truly despised her, they would not make her the focal point of so many shows.

As for Travelina, it could have been worse - I could have gone for John Byner.

crazy Jen is basically the new wonderboy who was the new billy staples who was the new al dukes who was the new tuttle..... get the point?

they always have the 1 person who they beat on and make fun of and make the audience hate.

they can do not it to any of the hideout guys because of cross show listenership. management woudl freak if ron hated J-dubbs of el jeffe.

so they bring in jenn. since she is not paid, there is no fear of her being fired or moving on as other have. she will be around until they burn her out, then they can just stop her from coming in. for one time, they control this bit. good move by them

if anyone remember how she started coming around, it was all ron's idea. they needed new people, she used to call and he invited her in one night. it has been progressing since then.

Marilyn Michaels. God, they used to trot out this talentless hack impersonator on all the talk shows simply because she was the only impressionist with tits (other than George Kirby and Monet)

Wow TJ thats Horrific.

The only worse Graucho though, has to go to Gabe Kaplan.

Or, we can just cut to the chase and name the most unfunny mammal ever: Billy Crystal

I've been thinking Fez has been nastier to callers recently. Funny thing is, they've been all women callers...hmmmmmmm.....You don't think? nah....

Ron's been harsh to Jen, but he cracks every so often. When she was talking about how she's been going hungry because of a lack of money lately, Ron seemed genuinely concerned about her welfare, and basically had a "no matter what's said on the show, I'm here for you" thing going on.

3) Dubs is interesting... not sure why he gets so much hate.

I think Dubs is hilarious on the show. That, and he has great mic timing. He's in and out, just enough. But has anyone really been "hating" on him? I recall him always being pretty well liked...now El Jefe has gotten a decent flogging on the board, mostly from zappa.

Crazy Jen benefits plenty in experience. It's not as if she's their comedy rape victim. She deserves a lot more credit than she is given.

a sadist is a person who is kind to a masochist

Very true. I don't think I've seen anyone run down Dubs. El Jefe caught a lot of heat when they moved down to DC because he was the focal point for the DC staff taking over for NY staff, but for some reason Dubs pretty much got a free pass.

A Fred Travelina reference and a Mariyln Michaels ref.? Damn impressive on any level. Not to pile on the poor guy, but I'm pretty sure that Freddy T. passed the baton to Jay Leno as the lamest Italian-American on planet Earth.

For example: Kindest Regards, Your Name
