View Full Version : How do YOU save?

I've had a bad string of luck with car repairs of late. Just yesterday I almost lost control of my car at lunch because my brakes were going. I ended up leaving early and brought it to the mechanic and had it fixed. However that repair made a serious dent in my financial situation.
I've been trying to save money but nothing seems to work, do any of you have a formula that works for you in terms of putting money away here and there and forgetting it. I mean it's easy to say just stick the money somewhere and forget it, but I'd like to know if someone has found a method that works. I don't like being in this sort've situation at all and I want to climb out of this and get on a path that will have me saving money and being secure for whatever other situation occurs.
On top of that I'd like to get a new car, but I don't have the money. I don't want to take a loan out for a car until I'm financially in better shape. I'd hate to have a huge monthly debt and then have some huge repair or situation occur that seriously puts me in the red.
If you have any suggestions please share them.

I cant save for shit; so when that sudden repair or expense comes up; in the past at least, my once large collection of musical instruments became quite small, one by one. I eBayed stuff I wasnt using. Did pretty good, actually.
Outside of becoming a Sperm Donor I'm out of ideas.

it seems like some small things can help like having 'direct deposit' and if you can contribute to a 401k or some retirement plan direct from payroll then do it...
in most cases if that money hits your hand before being deposited it will never make it into savings...

I have two savings accounts. I put all of my checks for tutoring into my one account that is not on my ATM card or can be transferred to my checking account. The paycheck I get from the school I work at, I put in my other savings that is accessible with the ATM and can be transferred to the checking. That way, I will not be tempted to take out any money from the tutoring one because I would have to drag my ass to the bank early on a Saturday morning to get my money, and we know that isn't happening any time soon.
For those of us who do not have two separate jobs like I do, you can use the same procedure, but just put a specified amount of money in the non-accessible account each month.

I am a pro at saving money. Through the years I have some a nice chunk of change and have never had to tap into it. I have a goal of buying a house before the age of 27 (4 years from now) and putting down 20%.
i think one of the best ways to save is to have a serious goal. not just "i want to have money" but " i want to have money so i can buy". it will make you second guess a lot more shit that you buy. like "do i really need that DVD/CD/play station game" or could that money be better off in the bank.
Some background - car is paid off. no college loans thanks to going to a state school and parents. NO credit card debt. actually I only have 2 credit cards and no bullshit bestbuy or macy's cards. I do pay rent and the corresponding bills associated with living alone. cell is paid by company which is cool. car insurance kills me and i have a good record.
best way to save money. write down every single day every thing that you more than 10 cents on. from magazines to bottled water. If you think this is going to be hard to remember do this: in the morning write down how much money you have on you. then at the end of the day write down how much you have left.
you will be shocked by how much money you waste. stupid shit like buying coffee and a donut. anyway one of the best things i do is when i cook dinner, i will make enough for lunch the next day. like if I am making chicken cutlets, i will set 2 aside and bring them for lunch and pick up a portuguese roll at 7-11 and make a sandwhich. then i take 8 bucks and set it aside to go into the bank. if i do this 3 days per week, i have 25 dollars to go to savings. doesn't sounds like much, but at the end of the year it 1200 dollars. its kind of like paying yourself to eat left overs.
Also drinking alchohol. be the DD more often than not. its really not THAT bad, and you save some serious change. I have basically stoppped drinking in the past year. just because of how shitty and unmotivated it made me feel the next day or 2. but it was nice when i had like 300 dollars on friday afternoon and monday morning i was only down maybe 100 from eating and food shopping as opposed to being tapped out.
Whatever you would have spent money on, but instead choose not to, take that money and put it into a savings account. so everytime you were going to buy a PS2 game take the 45 and drop it in the bank the next day. it was going to be spent anwyay. get it out of your hands/checking account as fast as possible. WHen we go out at night, i ask my friend who was the most drunk how much he spent last night, then i take whatever he told me and put it in the bank figuring if I was not the DD, i would have spent that too.
obviously there are nights when you drink or times when you really want something you get it. no need to live like a poor fuck, but there is a lot of waste. like computers. i would buy a new one every year if i didn't tell myself no. thats a hard one for me. but seriously, so it takes an extra hour to do some video encoding. where the fuck am i going? its not like i have a deadline.
if you have direct deposit then you are set. automatically take 10% of your pay and put it into a savings account. you will learn to just live with out it because you will never really have it. its such an easy way to save. that account will be huge in no time.
as for the car situation think of it like this: if you spent 2000 in the past year on car repairs, thats still less than 200 dollars per month. i am sure a car payment would be more than that.
you could pretend you have a 200 dollar a month car payment and put it in a special account just for a car. every month write a check like you have the payment and put it into the account. at the end of the year, you will obviously have 1 years worth of payments. do this for like 2 or 3 years and before you know it, you can almost buy the car outright.
its not hard in theory, but it is in practice. its just a lifestyle change and its hard.
i used to love clothes shopping. i would spend 1000 at a time no problem

I was always really good about saving money. But then when I quit my job to start my own business I found myself in trouble. Work was very slow in the beginning and I wasnt bringing in any cash. Then Christmas hit and that started my debt. Buying supplies for work and the odd car repair here and there Im now about $2000 in debt. Im finally at the piont where Im paying it off quickly but one or two slow months of work really hurts my bank account.

I have some of my money automatically go into my 401K, and I try to live within my means. I kind of get close some months to having a negative balance though. Fortunatly I had saved a lot of money from years ago and I can dip into it if things get tight. I avoid eating out a lot and spending frivously. I guess Im kind of miserly in some regards, but I figure its better to have then to not have. I get the same thing though; an unexpected windfall is followed immediatly by an equally unexpected expence!

I get paid every 2 weeks. My formula is pretty simple. Paycheck 1 plus some of 2 covers the bills for the month, not counting credit cards. After the second paycheck comes in, I pay all my bills. When the credit card bill comes in, I see what's left in my checking and pay towards that. If it's a good month and I think I have some left over, I move it to my savings account for those rainy day months. What's left in checking is pocket money until next payday.
Some months I cant put into savings - nbd.

Here's something on point from The Motley Fool
60 Second Plan: Short Term Savings (http://www.fool.com/60second/savings.htm?source=PFinAg)
I agree with what's been said, especially by JPMNick, Katylina, and SR71, but I would add some context. The only way to accumulate wealth (by non-extraordinary means) is to live slightly below your means and to save and invest the difference. Putting it away before you get your grubby mitts on it, or "paying yourself first", works for me. It is important to build up a safety cushion for the kinds of short-term financial problems you describe and for those you don't (getting fired, arrested, etc.). It is also important to save and invest for intermediate (a new car) and long-term (a house, retirement!) goals.
You have to decide for yourself what your best motivator is. For me, it was/is having "fuck you" money; that is I don't want to be completely dependent on any organization or individual (other than myself) for my financial well-being. It does involve some sacrifices in the short-term but I think it's worth it.

PAY YOURSELF FIRST.
Think about putting cash into a savings account before you pay all other bills. Even if it's just 50 bucks a month. Shit adds up quickly.

I agree with Rooster. Everyone here waste's like 100 bucks per month. if you put that right into a savings account you can not write a check from or ATM, you will have 1200 bucks by the end of the year. push that number up as much as you can.

I put in about 6% of my pretaxable wages in my 401k each paycheck. I should put more in, but I also have $125 automatically (direct deposit) put into a savings account each pay period. I don't touch it. I've been able to put away a nice piece of change so far.

I save my change. If something costs $1.05, I hand the cashier two bucks and pocket the 95 cents and then throw it in a coffee can. Then I take it to Commerce Bank and use their free coin counter and deposit it.
The change adds up to about $80 a month. In a year that's just under $1,000. That's my emergency fund.
Credit cards are necessary evils. But they suck. Bastards make too much money off them.
If you have direct deposit at work, they can direct deposit money into a savings account for you

I just have $300 automatically put into a savings account from my paycheck. That saves me around $1,000 a month, and leaves me more than enough in my checking account.
And the 401k can't be stressed enough. If your job offers it, POUNCE ON IT. I praised the day I was able to get mine.

Okay, I set up a recurring transfer from my checking to my savings account. My only question is this. I would like the transfers to occur on Fridays. I get paid weekly so I set it to weekly. The website for the bank asked me which date do I want this to start. So I picked this coming Friday. Would this mean that it will transfer the money each week on the day I selected to start it with?
I'm going to start with $25 a week going to my savings. I also have a credit union account linked into my direct deposit so I'm going to have $25 going there as well. I'll see how it goes from there. Though I would like to know about the recurring transfer if anyone knows.

Skipping breakfast may work when you're young, but as
you get older you need to jump-start your metabolism.
Besides, breakfast is usually your cheapest meal of the day,
and filling up on a cheap breakfast (oatmeal or cereal, toast
and a few eggs) will reduce your temptation to buy lunch.
There are some good posts. Generally, be cheap (frugal, if
you prefer). You can be frugal and still have fun. Back in
the day (pre-dotcom boom), I was living in Manhattan on
an admin assistant's pay (for a nonprofit, to boot), had a
sweet share in Stuy Town, with two crazy but harmless
roommates, and still managed to save money.
* Pack your lunch. (Including sodas and snacks -- those are
the most marked-up things going). Also, cook dinner for
yourself. It's also a time saver if you can cook for the week
on Sunday night or whatever. A bonus is that it forces you
to learn to cook more stuff (unless you want to eat pasta
and ramen all the time -- not good)
* Clip coupons (a buck is a buck is a buck)
* Buy stuff that you know you're going to need later, when
it's on sale -- staples like paper towels, detergent, toiletries;
also batteries, birthday cards, underwear, etc.
* You don't have to go to the costco extreme, but family-
sized stuff is usually cheaper (assuming you don't waste).
Unit pricing is your friend.
* Caveat to above: Don't buy something you wouldn't
normally just because it's "on sale"
* Entertainment is usually where you can make the
biggest cuts. Going out will kill you -- outside of cover
charges, etc., once you start drinking, your wallet opens
up. Be careful.
* Have fun on the cheap: Matinees, "pay what you can"
nights at museums, etc. Check local listings (does the Voice
still have their "Free Stuff" calendar? Like that.)
* Buy used (or closeout): CDs, games, books, clothes, etc.
Also, get a library card
* Check your monthly fixed costs and see what you can
live without -- especially subscriptions: magazines, gaming,
cable, online, cellular, tivo, netflix, add-on phone services --
what can you cut?
* Credit Cards: Don't. Unless you can pay off your balances
every month, and even then, be careful.
* Roommates: It can be a hassle, but saving half on rent
and utilities can take the sting out.
I don't have a full-fledged budget right now, but I have a
pretty good sense of where my money goes. Pick a week or
a month and figure out what you're spending your money
on -- keep a journal, save your receipts and ATM slips, etc.
Once you figure out what you're spending, you can see
what you can cut back on.

I've thought about doing work on the side, though I might have to consider doing a part-time job again.
As far as work on the side, I've been told by many people that I should do technical work for people, though I'm not so sure I want to do that. I don't think I want to get technical calls at all hours of the night. I get enough of that from my own family.

Reef I def. evaluate who I am going to do side technical work for, because as you said, after you fix their shit one time, they will call you EVERY TIME something goes wrong.
You basically have 2 options with this one. Suck it up and take the calls, hoping they pass your name on word of mouth. Or tell them for every call their will be a charge, which you will bill to them at the end of the month.
If you tell them the latter, the calls will def. be thought about more than before.
i did side computer work tuesday night. 5 hours at 60 dollars an hour. Cash. The guy has NO idea about computers, but really wanted to get these 2 comps running and set up this network in his house with Printers and all this shit. He did not have his shit together, so it took a little longer than expected (as well as 2 trips to best buy).
But he is a cop, and all his cop friends have bad "luck" with computers, so he is going to pass my name along. It can really become a very lucrative buinsess with only a few clients.
5 hours of work a month at 50 bucks an hour is an extra 250 dollars in your bank account. Well worth it I think.
