So CBS has been pimpin' it's fall lineup on the radio for a while and Two and Half Men has guest stars for its season premier. Now Sean Penn is fine, he's probably Charlie Sheen's buddy or whatever. But Elvis Costello? What the hell. I mean he did do a guest voice on the Simpsons as himself (when did that become so lame, by the way?) and that's OK, I guess. But appearing on a crappy sitcom? He loses major points for that.

E.C. is merely continuing in the grand tradition of legendary songwriters appearing on crappy sitcoms, hence Bob Dylan's unforgettable turn on "Dharma and Greg."

Or when Tom Waits appeared as "Pappy the Sea Captain" on "Growing Pains".

as far as sitcoms go, Two and A Half Men isn't crappy. It is a sitcom, so just keep that in mind. Just wanted to step up and say that. It aint so bad.

as far as sitcoms go, Two and A Half Men isn't crappy. It is a sitcom, so just keep that in mind. Just wanted to step up and say that. It aint so bad.
The problem is that it "ain't so good" either. And unfortunately (particularly with sitcoms), we've come to accept a lower standard of viewing acceptability in regard to quality writing/acting. We no longer say - "This is a great show", it's more along the lines of "it's ok".
When According to Jim is considered a lynch pin of sitcom programming for a network, then that network is really hurting.
Was Frasier (or even Friends) really so good year after year? Or did the audience's standards dip ever so slightly in order to accomodate the slipping quality that is a natural part of the creative erosion as creators and original writer's move on to other projects?
The invevitable results is that when our acceptability of mediocre offerings from one source occurs, we are more open to embracing something that's an ever so slightly more of a step down from another source.
I contend that this is the case in more areas than just entertainment, but that's for another thread and another forum.
Edit: was missing a couple of articles in my sentences.

I liked Elvis' appearance on an otherwise awful episode of "The Simpsons".
Elvis is manning the guitar stand for the new arrivals at the "rock camp," and Homer leaps over the counter, smacking off Elvis' hat and glasses, and all he shouts is, "OH NO! My image!"

Does Elvis Costello appearing on a sitcom diminish his performance in concert?
No.

Gregg Allman on Lost in Space, as well as in the movie "Rush."
Roger Daltrey hosting some show on the history channel.
By the way, 2 great albums: "One Way Out" by the Allman Brothers Band (2004) and "Deja Voodoo" by Govt Mule (2004).
