I remember seeing "Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens" in a dumpy movie theatre in Valley Stream. Kitten Natividad found her way into my dreams that night.

Rest in peace Russ.

One of my favorites - a real maverick. The opening of FASTER PUSSYCAT! is still one of the best openings to any film...

"Ladies and gentlemen...welcome to violence...the word and the act..."

Roger Ebert co-wrote two of Russ' films - BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, and (covertly) BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRAVIXENS - which is my personal favorite. So insanely trashy and silly, and really (in 1979) the end of several eras.

I was talking to someone I know just a few weeks ago about him; the guy puts on a movie memorabilia convention in Cleveland every year, I mentioned that Russ would be an excellent guest (two years ago he had Hershall Gordon Lewis), and he said that he had been in touch with Russ over the years, and that (sadly) Russ was actually battling Alzheimer's disease - something I didn't see mentioned in the article online.

About 10 years ago, another friend of mine, the owner of DC's premiere video store, The Video Vault, had the pleasure of being tossed out of a DC titty bar with Russ because Russ asked where the women with big breasts were. How great of an honor would that be - being tossed out of a strip club because Russ Meyer is being innapropriate?! HA!

Russ would spit upon your lust for fake boobs. He was a worshipper of TRUE tits.

I think you mean the great Harvey Korman, the 6 foot tall invisible rabbit who palled around with Jimmy Stewart and was one of the cornerstone's of the Carol Burnett Show.

He and comedic actor Tim Conway (who also had a role on the hit show Taxi as "Robert L. 'Bobby' Wheeler") still do the occasional gig in Las Vegas and are bringing their comedic stylings to the DC area in October.

Yeah man seriously, there should be some of the old classics posted here in tribute.

Even though I have only seen all of his films over the last 6 years or so, I am pretty sad about this. I never got the films on DVD cause they are just too damn expensive but I hope now maybe they will be remastered and put on DVD the right way. I can only hope. All I heard about his current DVD versions is they are nothing more than the video's transfered to disc. If I am wrong, PLEASE correct me.

Beyond The Valley of the Dolls is still one of my favourite films and NEEDS to be on DVD as well. Such a great film and nothing like seeing my favourite Playmate, Cynthia Myers (my other one is Fran Gerard) in some nice lesbian action within that film. I still lose it when the manager of the band dives to his death as The Carrie Nations are performing and the plunge is accompanied by a plane nose diving sound. Classic. The over the shoulder shots in Mudhoney were amazing as well. Hitler getting it in the ass in Up! and the loud POP upon anus removal had me in stiches as well as the big burly drunk lumberjack and the playful sex scenes with Raven De La Croix all over creation. Man if that movie was not all over the place.

You know, it is kind of hard to find pics of Myers beauties where they are NOT naked. Hmph!

I forget which video it was but it was a Playboy video and I bought it, which is weird coz to me Playboy Video has Zero Spankability.

Anyway it was a documentary about breasts, or maybe it was just the Voluptuous Vixens series, anyway he speaks and he's surrounded by most silicone: Sarenna Lee, Pandora Peaks, your basic Score Mag girls.

Those are about the most bootlegged movies ever; like others said getting FP and BTVOTD on VHS, much less DVD, has been an impossibility of George Lucas/Star Wars type scale for Afficianados of the Genre.

Anyone read FilmFax and/or Outre? God they Rock.

Cinefex is good too.

When life gave Russ lemons, he made Meyer Lemonade.

He actually made the first film to ever get the X rating. Vixen in 1967 I think it was. There was not even any visible penetration but there was so much rampant sexual contact in that film that the ratings board had no choice.

From a user comment on IMDB:

Russ Meyer's VIXEN was one of the first films to receive the newly-formed MPAA's X rating. There were stories that in some theatres, people would pay just to see the trailer for it then leave before the main feature(shades of THE PHANTOM MENACE!). Comparing it to other adult films of that era or even to some of Meyer's other films, VIXEN looks almost tame. Erica Gavin stars as a sexually voracious woman who lives in Canada with her bush pilot husband. During the course of the film, Gavin has sex with her husband, a Mountie (apparently they always get their WOMAN too), both members of a married couple that they guide through the Great White North and her own brother(!). Oddly enough, the only name I recognized from this movie was Harrison Page, the black friend of Vixen's brother. Page, like Gavin, also appeared in Meyer's BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, but he also had a sitcom in the Seventies (LOVE THY NEIGHBOR . . . and no, it wasn't about wifeswapping!). As with Meyer's other work, there is no way you can watch this and keep a straight face . . . nor should you want to.

Do yourself a favor and if you are close to an Indie Video Store that has good amount of Cult Films, watch Mudhoney, Faster Pussycat KILL! KILL!, Up!, or Supervixens. Beyond The Valley of the Dolls is the most accessible of them all and should be at Blockbuster or whatever mass market video store there is as the fillm was put out by 20th Century Fox.

In the present terminology of porn I never really considered his films now that I watch them to be porn in the sense of lame set up, sex, lame set up sex, repeat. There was so much more substance to it that by the time one would being to run a batch you would go back into the film in no time and get into the cheesy story.

Also, if any of you record store geeks happens to ever stumble across the vinyl (not picture disc) copy of the "UP!, Beneath the Valley of the UltraVIXENS, SuperVIXENS" triple soundtrack let me know. I have the other 3 but desperately need this one. Dank you.
