Ive only heard a few of their songs when K Rock does their resurrection lunch from noon to 1. From what I heard they have a good sound and for some reason they never got the same recognition as the cure and depeche mode. Any cd recommendations from the Furs? I might want to add them to my collection

Start out with their greatest hits and then if you really get into them buy Mirror Moves; Forever Now; Talk, Talk, Talk; Midnight to Midnight.

Give Echo & The Bunnymen a try if you like them, or House of Love.

Personally, I'm not a huge Furs fan, but their best-of is worth picking up.

oh, I think he's on a slow, slippery slope that'll lead to Bauhaus and the Sisters of Mercy....

I only heard one song of theirs, and it was covered by Alkaline Trio. It was the song, "Heaven". The song is pretty good, but it could be a lot different.

Ignore the greatest hits. Greatest Hits are for houswives and little girls.

Buy their first (self-titled) album. It is absolutely fantastic. It'll probably be the only one you need. If you really, really like it, move forward chronologically 'til you reach the point where they started to suck.

Ridiculous.

Most bands, no matter how good, have an inevitable downslide to a point where they start producing bad albums (ie - more unlistenable songs than listenable ones). Now, while they may be putting out bad ALBUMS, they still may be putting out good SONGS every so often. Songs that inevitably end up on a best of or greatest hits comp (The best bands can only have a best of, as they managed to have only a few, if any, "hits"). The logic is clear then...why punish yourself with bad albums when you can skim the fat and get the good stuff on a greatest hits comp? Buy the good albums, then get the best of, always. Typically you end up with B-sides or rare songs or single-only tracks that you can't get on any of the albums.

REAL fans ALWAYS have the best of comps next to the artists' albums in their collection. They're essential, if they're well done.

The important points have been covered so let me fill in some of the gaps

A Very Good Furs Web Site (http://www.burneddowndays.com/) Everything you want/need to know (& then a little more)

The Butler Bros. also were the moving force of another band Love Spit Love (draw your own conclusions as to that name). They put out two albums; imho they are nice work but not "required" except for diehard fans; two songs to download from that era are "Change in the Weather" and "Am I Wrong".

In each of the last two summers they've gone on mini-tours and played a bar (The Downtown) in Farmingdale on Long Island. I saw them both times and they held up pretty well (and were very accomodating about signing old school memorabilia).

Mojo: My "Housewives and little girls" line was stolen shamelessly from Bruce McCulloch. Sorry if it offended.

But really, I have encountered very, very few Greatest Hits packages thet were worth buying. (I can't think of a one right now, but I know if I say there aren't any, I'll be proven wrong.) The record companies know this, and that's why they always throw on a b-side or new song, to make the big-time fans shell out for something they'd never want otherwise.

Plus, unless you're Mariah Carey or the like, you probably don't have enough actual "hits" to warrant an album, so it becomes "Every Song We Ever Released As A Single", which RARELY includes the great album tracks that were not demed single-worthy by the label. (And "single-worthy", as defined by the record labels usually means "blandest and least offensive")

And "Best Of" is never that. It's just another name for Greatest Hits. And Greatest Hits is another name for...oh wait, we covered this already.

EXCEPTION: Compilations compiled by the artists themselves. These can, on occasion, be worth a listen.

A good band will put some thought and effort into creating a coherent song cycle that deserves to be listened to as intended. Individual songs, when taken out of context, often aren't as good.

Everyone may now feel free to call me an idiot and list your favorite band's Greatest Hits album as proof.

Oh, no worries, not at all! I thought it was from "High Fidelity," actually...

I used to feel the same way, but when I started really getting into bands with a lot of import only albums or singles, getting those songs on a single disc for much less money was like a godsend. And, like I said, good bands usually put something extra into their best of's. My rule is, if there are at least three new songs, I'm getting it. The best bands have stuff on theior best of's that you can't find elsewhere, and you WANT to own.

Check this thread out for a lot of what I'm talking about. (http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/Forum/80/Topic/33760/page/The_Best__Greatest_Hits__Compilation_Ever.htm)
