I only went to college a couple of years, then I married at the age of 19.
After 7 years of marriage it ended in divorce.
I don't recommend that path.
What I would have done:
1. Graduated
2. Travelled
3. Actually taken a stab at doing some serious (meaning paying) writing.
It's that chance to go for that improbable "dream" job that so quickly becomes a "what if" when you don't go for it.
This message brought to you by a guy with a computer full of essays/stories that are gathering dust. Sigh.

i finished school in the fall semester, but my school was so small that i didn't graduate until spring ...
while waiting to use my history/2nd education degree, i got a office job ... six months later i got a sweet job offer, and it led to a series of very unplanned and interesting career choices ...
my teaching certification expired a year ago, and i have no desire to revisit that path again ...

I didn't graduate from college until I was 25. I went straight to work at a radio station which I ultimately ended up hating. Got a new job just before my 27th birthday that I love and looks promising to have a long career with the company.
Good Luck!

jeff - why don't you try and get some of your stuff published now? you seem to be an awesome writer who is very witty. you should go for it. nothing is worse than regret.
Fiesty -
if you go for you masters, go for teaching or buisness. you should also travel if you like that kind of stuff. i hate traveling, so that would not have worked for me. have a party with fmily and friends. it will make you feel good about your accomplishments.

indeed there is a party we are having in dec-like a week before christmas- i OFFICIALLY grad after the newyr- when stuff is processed and i too go to a small school- 2200 people
i am "invited" back to walk in may of 2005
i want to thank KC because for a looong time i have felt i am some bad person for not graduating on time (if all went to plan i would have grad in 2003) people kept telling me it doesnt matter when you graduate just that you finally do
its weird because there are like 2 other people who have been at my school in my major who i came in with back in august of 1999- at least im not alone...lol

Moved home with the folks - got a job at a movie theatre working 30 hours a week; then got a retail job that paid really well, and began working 40 hours a week - kept the theatre job, though, but went down to 20 hours a week, but after a month of that took it down to 10 hours a week, and added a 20 hour a week "internship" (which was really more like volunteer work, since it wasn't officially through a school. Soon I dropped the one theatre job, but took another one - one day a week - just to see if I liked it (it was for a potential assistant manager position).
After one month, I dropped that job, and for the next five months worked 20 hours a week as an "intern," and 35 hours a week in retail; and saved my money living at home.
After that time, I was going to leave the volunteer/intern job, when I was offered a full time salaried employed job with them, which I took.
I kept the retail job, though, but was now working that under 20 hours a week. That lasted about a year before I quit that, and worked the salaried job solo.
I would eventually return to part time retail work during the holidays, to make some extra scratch for presents. One year I did the three jobs again - retail / full time salaried / and twice a week working a phone bank for the SHakespeare theatre (one of my worst jobs ever).
I never (!) had any desire to go back to college.

I figured getting a degree in Architecture would take too long so I only stayed in school long enough to get my Associates Degree in Interior Design. I had a few odd jobs doing carpentry and sometimes doing freelance drawings for designers. Then I went to work for 2 years designing kitchens. Last year I left the Kitchen company to open my own business doing architectural renderings.

While I was in college, early on, I was working for a sporting goods place, mostly doing gameroom supplies (pool tables, dartboards, etc.) and engraving. An acquaintance of mine knew I was going for a degree in Computer Eng'g, and needed help during the summer rebuilding a TV control room near where I live. Originally, I was only there to help him with setup of a new computerized routing system, but he soon determined that I could deal with other aspects of the job and quickly offered me a part-time position. The pay was better than my old job, and they were willing to work around my school schedule, so I quit the other job and went to work for him.
Once I graduated, I continued to work for the TV company, eventually becoming the technical director and supervisor for the Department. Loved the work, didn't like my boss that much. At one point in 2000, I decided to look for employment elsewhere, and wound up with a job in a computer firm. Went right from the last job to the current one with no time off.

After I recieved my BA in child study/special education, I did a maternity leave replacement in a local school district. As I was working for my Masters in Reading Education, I worked at a private school as a special educator, getting all of my ABA training. Now that I have my Masters, I am still working in the same private school for one more year. At the end of this year, I will start looking for a district special education job.

Once I graduated with a BS is Psychology, I was a teacher's aid for about 6 months. I needed something more full time and with benefits, so I quit that and worked for a car rental company. That sucked, and a year later I started working for a direct marketing company. I was able to move out on my own by the time I was 25. I'm still pretty much doing the same thing. I want to go back to school, but I really don't know what I want to get my master's in.

f you derail a serious thread with a stupid joke (Or some kind of insult, or stupid board battle), you will be warned not to do it again.
when someone's talking about something extremely serious and personal to them.
some incredly emotionally traumatic shit out there in the real world.

Understood. I'm just trying to be consistent.
It's not our place to gauge the emotional or traumatic "quota" of each thread, since each one is different to each person. If the poster decided to put the thread in this forum in the first place above any others, that's supposed to be indicative that they want a "serious" thread. If not, they shouldn't have posted it in this particular forum.
It's all or nothing. We can't read into everyone's head with what they're thinking when they post, so it's fair to everyone if we just stick to the overall rule. If we let something slide (And we have) in one thread, the same kind of humor might go over completely the wrong way in another thread.
Just FYI. Plus, it doesn't hurt to refresh that thread every so often. What it comes to is that it's the decision of the thread author. If they want a "serious" thread, post it in "That's Life." If not, post it elsewhere. Ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom.

I finished all my courses by December so for the next 5 months until graduation in May I worked in a nursing home. The following fall semester I quit that job and returned to school to get my M.A. After I got my M.A. I spent 9 months doing nothing. Got a job working in the mental health field and also started coaching youth basketball and track. Fast forward 7 years later I'm just chilling out again. But I'm going back to work again real soon.

Oops. Didn't realize where it was. And it was a suck a bad joke, I should be warned just on that fact alone...
In all seriousness, I traveled on exchange while I was in school, but I still wanted to travel after I graduated. I had a friend who spent a significant amount of time in Europe right after. I was going to fly over for a week or so, but I couldn't get priceline to find me a plane ticket for $200.
A lot of people I met on exchange who weren't students were spending a year traveling. They might work a bit along the way, but basically crossing the continent (this was Australia, by the way) slowly living life and having what seemed to be a good time. They were mostly Europeans, and it seemed like most everybody in Europe took time after graduating to travel and whatnot.

Feh. I think taking time between degrees is the smart way to go. You need time to absorb what you just accomplished. your young you have plenty of time to further your education.
After I graduated with a BFA with a concentration in sculpture my options were needless to say limited. So I headed to Trenton N.J. to be an apprentice at an art foundry that casts fancy statues and such. Although the foundry work was awful it did lead to other venues and I now work in a field that is somewhat art related. There was definetely times where I felt lost but things seem to have a way of working themselves out.
