The drudge report is reporting that Leno will step down in 2009.
Drudge Story (http://www.drudgereport.com/flash5.htm)
Why announce this now? Seems like alot can change in 5 years...
Its not like anyone is watching Leno anyway. :) They should just make the switch now.

You mean no one cool is watching Leno. Most of the country isn't cool. NBC doesn't care about that, they just like the numbers. They can't charge more for ads directed at "cooler viewers".
The memo says Jay will announce it tonight. Makes not sense. Carson's announcement was less than a year in advance of leaving and wasn't that a shock to NBC?
Why would Conan even want to comit to another 5 years of 12:30 just to begin 11:30? He might want to do something else before then.

Well it's been rumored that FOX and CBS were going to go after Conan big time when his contract was up. FOX reportedly was going to offer him $25 million a year and CBS was going to have him take over for Letterman. I assume they are announcing it now because they have signed Conan to a long term extension and it would have come out eventually since Jay's contract runs out in 2009.

Just saw this on cnn.com:
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- NBC's "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno will retire at the end of his current five-year contract in 2009 and be replaced by "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien, the network said Monday.
O'Brien signed a new contract Monday that guarantees he will assume the job as host of America's top-rated late night talk show, "The Tonight Show," sometime during the 2009 season. Leno took over the show from Johnny Carson in May 1992. By the time he steps down, he will have hosted the program for more than 17 years.

!
I was all set to parrot back what you said before when I read that. I'm actually stunned at that.
Maybe Conan's people really put the screws to NBC to make a decision or else Conan would bolt, so they nipped it in the bud.
WHY would Leno decide to ever leave that job??? Christ - what a tool.

Leno keeps saying he's never spent a dime of the money he's made from The Tonight Show. And now he's making $27 million a year. So maybe he just figures he's gonna need some time to spend some of the hundreds of millions he'll have by then.

Good for Conan!
The announcement solves a delicate problem for NBC, which realized O'Brien was getting antsy in his "Late Night" time slot (12:35 a.m. Eastern) and wanted to keep him from jumping to another network.

This makes perfect sense to announce this now, since CBS and Letterman have been making rumblings about Dave possibly leaving soon. CBS being able to offer 11:30 sooner is what got them Letterman in the first place, so it's not too much of a stretch to see Conan doing the same.
Still, cool news for Conan, who definitely deserves that...but won't 2009 be 17 years for Leno? The guy couldn't even make it to 20?
And whoever said they hope Conan stays in NYC is dead-on...but it won't happen. "The Tonight Show" thrives on having "bigger stars," and that's why it moved to LA decades ago in the first place. So it's good for Conan's career, but don't be surprised if the Conan we knew and loved vanished as soon as the swtich takes place.

Heres what I gathered from they Yahoo story,
a) Conan was out at the end of his contract unless NBC was gonna promise him the better slot.
b) Leno's gonna be 59 in 5 years, its gonna be time to go at that point,
c) NBC is smart keeping Conan away from FOX and NBC. Conan will dominate the 11:30 slot, though be it in 5 year. And frankly for a guy whos on from 12:30 to 1:30. he gets pretty damn good ratings.
d) Theyre announcing it now because today is the 50th anniversary of the Tonight show, and Leno just wants to inform the viewers that the show will be funny again....in 5 years.

This is good news and bad. I like Letterman too, although his show has been sucking alot lately, and would hate to have to pick between them. The Leno vs Letterman is an easy choice.
I guess in the end Conan would win but as someone said I really hope the show doesn't change too much. The current trend seems to be when funny people leave NYC they're never the same.
I found this quote from the yahoo story amusing...
"Seinfeld has proven how you can move beyond TV and continue to be as big and as popular and as in demand as ever without having to punch the clock every night,"
Right but Seinfeld is funny. You couldn't pay me enough to see Leno's standup.

Dave announced it on his show before Jay did. He gave Conan a lot of nice compliments and said he'd do a good job. Then he made fun of Jay for announcing his retirement in 5 years. Then he wondered if him and Paul could get the Late Night show back so they could start having fun again. It's was pretty funny stuff.

You won't miss Stuttering John? Actually I don't think he'd be able to do those "Joel with young asain boys" jokes, or even have Joel stand there with that crazy grin on his face. Middle American couldn't take that, Joel would have to do his job more straight-edged than that Red Haired announcer on Letterman who calls himself "Big Red" when seducing the ladies.

Interesting side point brought up by SKW.
I wonder if Stuttering John had any idea when he took the Leno gig that it had a life expectancy of 5 years.
And what the hell do you spin that into for your next job?
What's the odds that John bails early from the show?

The sock is fine as long as it's not a dress sock, the 12:30 time frame has long been a casual one.
Additionally, the sock can be any color, but not controversial.
