37 years ago, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys started to create an album that was said to rival Sgt. Pepper's in its innovation and musicianship. Unfortunately Brian took enough LSD to fill a kiddie pool and the project was never completed, only achieving mythic status as one of the great "lost" albums of the 60's. Several cuts from the sessions survived, most notably "Good Vibrations" but for the most part, the album has never been heard in its entirety...until now.
Brian Wilson, sober and clean (though still a little loopy) has re-recorded the entire album and is releasing it tomorrow. You can preview tracks from it here, but you need to register for free first. (http://www.smilethealbum.com)
I am a Beach Boys fan and I know there are others out there (AJinDC) who are anxiously awaiting this album to get a glimpse at what might have been.

TJ, as a guy who has been noodling around with synthesizers and sound for decades, the use of the Theremin on the song 'Good Vibrations' is perhaps the first real 'musical' use of an electronic synthesized sound. And plain fucking brilliant.
and as for production, that still has people, pro engineers even going, how did they do that? and have been trying to get 'that' sound, just two words:
Pet Sounds

Mike, this album was said to have blown Pet Sounds away. That is the reason why I have been aching to get my hands on it.

Yep. I admit to not being too knowledgable about the band, but ya gotta love those bands and artists who we KNOW have stuff thats been sitting around for Years, untouched.
Example; the Led Zep DVD that came out recently has footage that was about the most bootlegged concert footage for Years, since 1977 Knebworth, on down, and to see the Perfect, Authentic, not a 8th generation copy with crap sound version is So Cool. And such a treat for the ears.
Oh! Tha vaults of unrealeased stuff from so many bands! Fricking legal stuff just kills any impetus at all. Ya gotta thank god for labels like Rhino.
Ok Im meandering.

Robert Christgau (!) gives it five stars in the Rolling Stone review
Read it here (http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/_/id/6490422/brianwilson?pageid=rs.Home&pageregion=triple1)
Looks like a must have for both serious & casual (me) fans alike.

I just bought the album at lunchtime and had a hard time leaving the car after I put it on. It's alternately beautiful, haunting and magnificent. You realize that the fabric of popular music might have changed significantly if this had ever been released when it was supposed to. All I can say is a big fuck you to Mike Love who kept telling Brian that "this is not Beach Boys music".
Wilson ain't what he used to be, and that's being kind.
Agreed but he still has an innocence in his voice that makes this heart-wrenching. I never heard the originals but now I want to search out the bootlegs.

Anywhere I can hear some clips of the new version online? I'm real curious with all the stellar reviews it's getting, but am still wary of how different it'll sound from the old bootlegs...
On a related note, does anyone remember an SNL sketch from the 90's, with Tim Robbins playing Brian Wilson as a guest on "The Larry King Show?"

I do. While I can't stand his politics I can't deny the fact that he is a great actor. His portrayal of Brian Wilson as a jittery, on the edge basketcase was awesome.

It's amazing how hard it is to find a music store these days. At lunch today, I drove an extra 10 miles in two directions hoping to bump into a strip mall with a Sam Goody, Coconuts, CD World, etc., down here where I work in Cranbury so I could listen to this CD in the afternoon on the computer in my lab. No dice. The closest I came was a small Blockbuster without a music section.
Oh well, there's plenty of places on 22 in Union to find it once I get out of here for the night, guess it'll have to wait.

if you go to easytree.org (http://www.easytree.org/) and register there are a few torrents with bootleg versions of SMILE ...
i dowload Beach Boys Smile Vigotone FLAC (http://www.easytree.org/torrents-details.php?id=2058) last night and it's really good ...
Notes: Here it is. Arguably the most famous Smile bootleg of all time, this collection is well done with generally excellent sound. This is an essential title for your Smile collection, and I am presenting it here as an EAC rip from the original silvers, so there has only been one generation of DAE. Enjoy! Scans are included in the torrent.

I can't believe I overlooked this thread! Looking at the dates, it was when I was on travel.
I'm only 30, so I'm not sure if I have my music history correct. I always thought Sgt. Pepper's was the Beatles answer to Pet Sounds. So if this was set to be a right back atcha' to Sgt. Pepper's & a step beyond Pet sounds, then I must have this!
It was. Recording for SMiLE started with the "Good Vibrations" in 1966. It was supposed to have been released around January 1967 -- 6 months before Sgt. Pepper's. The artwork for the album was even completed before Brian shelved the tapes:
http://theacf.com/smile/smileinsertfront.jpg
Man, why can't they put out the original "Smile" tapes, too?
They did -- kinda. The biggest "legal release" of the SMiLE tracks appear on Disc 2 of 1993's 5-disc boxset "The Beach Boys Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of The Beach Boys." This is the best "best of" they have put out. I also have 2 different bootleg versions. They have the same tracks but the folks that made each version did so in the order they thought Brian would have (or should have).
I was lucky enough to score a ticket to the 12 October "SMiLE" performance in DC. I've seen Brian 4 times since 2000 and ironically it was while performing SMiLE, the project that set him over the edge, that he showed more energy and enthusiasm than ever before. As much as the music was amazing, the visuals who equally impressive. It brought to life the comedic side that the music is supposed to have.
The only thing different about the tracks on this album and the original tapes is the voices. Everything else is repeated note-for-note. Brian, original SMiLE lyricist Van Dyke Parks and Darian Saranhaja (from Brian's band) filled in the missing pieces and tied the whole thing together magnificently.
Beach Boys fans have been waiting for SMiLE as long as Red Sox fans have been waiting to win a World Series. It was WELL worth the wait.

<p>I'm resurrecting this thread because I saw Brian perform "SMiLE" again when I was in CT a couple of weeks ago. This performance was even better than the one I saw in October.</p><p>I also picked up the SMiLE DVD at the show. This contains the film "Beautiful Dreamer", which chronicles the history of SMiLE and Brian's decision to finish it, as well as a 2004 performance of SMiLE that is outstanding. Brian's voice is far from what it was in the '60s but it now has a poignancy to it when you watch him perform the album that should have been his greatest triumph but instead led to his collapse. He is actually happy and energized by performing it.</p><p>"Beautiful Dreamer" is an excellent account of the SMiLE story and has interesting insights from Brian himself who was always reluctant to talk about SMiLE. This is a very informative and touching DVD which I <u>HIGHLY</u> recommend to those who are fans or are just curious.</p><p>Read and order here: <a href="http://www.brianwilson.com/store/dvds_smile.html">http://www.brianwilson.com/store/dvds_smile.html</a></p>

Is it wrong to say that I'm gay for AJ after that post? Because I am.

::E-mailing Chris Hansen and Perverted Justice as we speak...::
Glad you like them TJ. I'm making it my mission to spread the gospel of Brian Wilson.
Here are some more tracks from the SMiLE sessions that appeared on subsequent albums:

I was pissed that the videos I linked are no longer available but I made a great find today.
Some guy has made videos for the first three songs on Pet Sounds -- the forerunner to SMiLE. What's most impressive about them is that they are audio of the recording sessions with interesting factoids included -- kind of like the old "Pop Up Video".
This is great stuff because you actually hear the recording process. What I've always loved about Pet Sounds is that I discover something new everytime I hear it.
I'm hoping he'll make more of these videos for the rest of the songs on the album but, in the meantime, listen...watch...and learn...
