Wait a couple of years then we'll have terrabyte ipods. You can hold every song ever made. You'll be the coolest kid on the block. Not that your not cool now. I'm sure you are but you'll be cooler and sexier with a terrabyte ipod. Till then enjoy the best of all worlds.

I have an Iriver IHP 140. The multicodec feature is nice (plays wma, ogg, mp3, etc) but the tuner is pretty bad. Don't know if the tuners for other Iriver products are as bad.
Never got into the Ipod. You're locked into AAC and MP3. Most of my music is ripped to Ogg.

Well now I'm confused. If you already know that one is better than the other, what do you need us for?
Besides, not every Ipod holds the same amount of songs - they have different sized hard drives.
Just like they have different sized "other brand" MP3 players.
There's a thread on Ipod if you want to search for it which should give you all the boards thoughts on the product (at least those that felt like commenting on it).

To reiterate an IPOD IS AN MP3 PLAYER.
Ipods have them from 4GB to 40 GB.
Iriver makes up to 40 GB.
Nomad also makes them up to 60GB I believe.
Use www.cnet.com and give reviews on all of them.
Use www.buy.com and you might find them for cheaper there.

I'll give you that it's more portable, but the quality isn't better.
Portability isn't necessarily an upgrade. Laptops are nice, but you still go to a desktop PC when you want more power/speed. In fact, laptops are still limited when it comes to the ability to find a decent balance between the processor and actual response speed.
When I think upgrade I think 8 track to cassette to CD.
Besides, a lot of people who own MP3 players still buy/obtain CD's from which to rip the music.

The MP3 algoritm essentially strips the music of a lot of frequencies, and screws up transients. If you want to listen to music encoded at 128 kb/sec go for it, for me, and yep, its sounds elitist, but 128 = unlistenable.
256 sounds OK, but the Lossey bits are, well, lost.
Someone said you can get all the new Brian Wilson songs online. Well, if its at 128, then saying skip the CD is fine, but you're gonna miss a lot of what was laid down on good old analog tape, which has a bit rate of God knows how many Megs, not Kilos, per second.
I think one second of uncompressed .wav = 1.4 - 1.6 MB. each second. That's gonna eat up a lot of memory. So for some, an iPod is nice, I will be listening to the CD on a portable CD player and a good pair of headphones, which is yet another issue.

Hehe, I guess I'm on of the lucky ones. 128 kb/sec sounds great to me. Apparently the compression algorithm matches the freq content with "typical" human hearing characteristics, removing the "less" important freq.

Wow, this brings me back to when I was a member of the New York Audiophile Society (Almost 10 years ago) This debate was raging!

I have the 40GB iPod, sounds great (most of my music is 128K acc files, the apple default)
The only bad thing is it's sometimes hard to navigate 5500 songs (Most of my collection, I still have a few dozen CD's to rip, I'll have lots of extra space)
I actually listen to Ron and Fez on it more than Music.
I hear wonderful things about iRiver's H120. not as "pretty" but its functionality is good.

I hear wonderful things about iRiver's H120. not as "pretty" but its functionality is good.
I have the IHP 140, which is basically the 40GB version of the 120. The player is great (the only things about it that I don't like is that you can only queue one song in advance, and if you use playlists, it won't play them randomly). It can act as a hard drive, a voice recorder (with built-in or external mic) and has optical input and output, plus a host of other features that you can find out on their website.
It won't play music in AAC format, though, so if most of your music is already ripped to AAC, you'd have to convert it. It does cover pretty much all other codecs- Ogg, WAV, MP3, WMA, ASF. I tend to rip mine to VBR Ogg. Very good reproduction if you use the right headphones (digital monitors).

Yer absolutely correct, thats exactly what is taken away, and when I re-read my post I sound like some fucking music snob.
A Good Song wins over a Bad Recording. Not saying MP3 is bad. Its wonderful. Changed music; a 14:1 compression with that little actual loss in quality? That's amazing.
So many kick ass Albums have what some might call Shitty production but the album are still amazing despite, and maybe Because of, said Bad production.
=
And in parody songs, I remember listening to Howard when he had Parody Song contests, and the winner, or many great ones were often some guy literally yelling into some $20 tape recorder, and it kicked ass over some other entry that was flawlessly produced, but Sucked Ass.
