Holy shit... This is really sad. One of the great radio legends of all time. He probably couldn't stand to see WNEW in its current state any longer. Rest in peace Scottso.

*Edit: Way to go, NBC news:

"NEW YORK -- Disc jockey and radio personality Scott Muni has died. He was 74. The announcement was made by Infinity Radio, which owns Q104 FM, where Muni worked most recently."

Nice job guys... But Infinity does not own Q104. That would be ClearChannel.

In August 1972, while holding several people hostage, a desperate bank robber called Muni while he was on the air. Three years later, that bank robbery would be turned into the Academy Award Winning Film "Dog Day Afternoon."

i did not know that ...

when i hear 'rock & roll' by velvet underground, i always think of scottso ...

I just read his bio on the Q104.3 web site. I had no idea HE was the radio personality that was called during the bank robbery that was made into the movie Dog Day Afternoon. Creepy.
I had listened to Scottso on the radio for pretty much all of my enjoyment of Rock and Roll.
I remember when he was on TV as the Stones started their Steel Wheels tour. I kept thinking to myself....oh yes...face for radio. But he did a damn good job.
He had been sick for a while, so this passing eases his suffering.
RIP Scott...and thank you for the music.

"What did he want???"
"What do all men want Phillip?"
"He wants you to dress up like Wonder Woman, tie him up with your golden lariat and force him to tell the truth?????"

I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times when WNEW would have the huge outdoor concerts at Asbury Park.

I remember Howard busting his balls doing an imitation of him while the sound of a Respirator played.

Scottso Ruled.

I can still hear his voice coming through my radio. 40 years with WNEW. It seems like every station on the dial is doing a tribute to him. WFUV (where alot of his old NEW coworkers work) have all been doing stuff for him. Even ESPN radio and Air America did some stuff.

Scottso right after saying hello to about 50,000 fans on the beach in Asbury Park at one of the WNEW remotes. The ovations for him were just huge, and watching him broadcasting was just the coolest.

http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/muni2

Now THAT's an WNEW Remote!! Georgia Satellites right after Muni brought them on. Oh my God the alcohol was freeflowing back then, walk with your coolers right on the beach, totally allowed. Sun poisoning and alcohol poisoning were running a good neck and neck race that day for some of the die hard fans, people were on the beach before sunrise to get a good spot.

::sigh::
