I have a job op in Cambridge, MA from an old boss. Should I take it?

I have no ties here, and I'd have fewer there.

What to do?!?!?!?!

Why not? It's close enough to NY/NJ where if you get homesick you can drive for a little bit and be back. Did you like working for this person? If so, this might be a great place for a new start. While Hoboken is nice, Cambridge blows it away.

Sometimes making such a move gives you the opportunity to re-invent yourself. I know if it was me, I would be scared too, but if I was going to move, Id like to move to a warmer place than here. I talk to people from up there all day and they seem very laid back and stuff. I imagine the stresses of everyday life are less there than here.
You need to look at the costs of living up there, see how the rents are and fuel and food costs etc. and then see how much he is willing to pay you and see if your better off there than here.

Same pay, more stress, they may not pay for the move since I don't work for the division.

I'd need time to pack and rent out my apt.

I dunno, I feel so alone. This is all so cool yet scary at the same time!

Alice, just thinkin' (actually typing) aloud...

You mention you don't have too many connections here, a plus for the move.

Up there in Taxachusetts you have zero.., a minus.

You need to dump your apt... a burden.

You need to schlepp all of your 20+ years :p of belongings all the way up 95... a minus.

Are there any prospects here locally that you can look into?
Just wondering. I, by no means, am against your move.
Shit, my in-laws came here from Argentina with nothing but a suitcase, limited english, and a desire to make it.
Now they drive Mercedes' and are currently on a MONTH long vacation in Italy!!
I am just thinking, it is a big step.

I probably just confused you even more, rather than helping. Sorry!

After checking what I poorly typed...

GO FOR IT, BABE!! Best of luck!!

If you think you can make do with less pay and more stress while adjusting to a new life up there then there's nothing more to think about really.

You seem to be completely unsatisfied(to say the least) with the current state of your affairs, job, outside life, etc. so this might be a really great opportunity to break away from everything that's been the norm to you for so long.

If it were up to me i'd move up there in a heartbeat, i hope you find comfort in any decision you make though, you deserve a break P, don't forget it!

man i remember when you im'ed me with this and blew my mind:

Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll give it a shot. Say I'm working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. So I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, 'cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never had a problem with get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Send in the marines to secure the area" 'cause they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number was called, 'cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some guy from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass. And he comes home to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile my buddy from Southie realizes the only reason he was over there was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the skirmish to scare up oil prices so they could turn a quick buck. A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. And naturally they're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's got to walk to the job interviews, which sucks 'cause the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin' 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what do I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. Why not just shoot my buddy, take his job and give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president.

Could you sublet your apt and make some extra cash on the side while you live in Cambridge?

It sounds like a great opportunity to me. I love Massachusettes. It's one of the places I've been to where the instant I got there that I felt at home. Walking the streets and hanging out in the bars, and other places just felt right. I've never been to Cambridge myself but I've heard from a lot of people who have and they love it there.

If you enjoy being around family and friends where you are then it will definitely be hard at first, but you will meet new people. My experiences with people in Boston were always good so I think you'll do fine.

As for the job, if it's something you want to do and feel comfortable with your old boss than I say go for it.

You've mentioned that you're unhappy with your work situation so, in that regard, if this is a job you'd like to do and for a boss you like I say take a chance. It's my belief that once you're happy at work everything else falls into place. If this job and/or Massachusetts aren't to your liking you can always move back. At least you can say you gave it a shot and you won't regret not doing it.

Good luck with your decision! Do you at least have some time to mull it over?

Wow-- thanks Joe! I was looking over the courses that I'll be taking and it's a little overwhelming, especially since I haven't been in school for 15 years. But all I know is that I'm miserable in the position I'm in now and the only thing I can do is forge ahead if I'm going to make a change.

Big Thanx to Fallon.

Jimmy Fallon kissing Drew Barrymore -- on the field, on live TV -- right after the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. In fact, they were shown in a closeup within 60 seconds of the final out. And every Red Sox fan is determined to pretend that this never happened, and that it didn't taint the moment even a little bit ... so it wasn't a huge deal.</center>
