I'm so sad. She was a 12 year old Rottweiler named Rio. She still lived with my family in New Jersey after I came down to Texas from college so I wasn't there. But everytime I went home to visit she would get SO excited to see me and then when I'd leave she'd be all depressed and wouldn't eat for about 2 days after I'd go. I loved her so much and would have brought her down here but she was my family's dog too and I work all day and live in an apartment whereas my mom was home with her all the time and she had a huge back yard to play in so I didn't want to have to move her.

Anyway, she had started to get really bad arthitis and we put her on some medicine but it didn't help. For the last 3 or 4 days she didn't even have enough strength to get up and go outside to the bathroom or eat or drink so my parents had to make the hard decision to put her out of her pain. They brought her in last night and they're getting her cremated for me. I don't know what I will do with the ashes yet.

It hasn't even really hit me yet. If I let myself think about it I think I might break down. Some people may not understand but I know there are a lot of animal lovers here so I know some of you will relate. She was the only pet I've ever had so it makes it even harder. :(

I've had several dogs pass away in my lifetime, and being a dog lover I know how it feels to have your dog put down. My favorite dog in the world, our Yorkie "Whiskey", had a tumor on her spine the size of a small softball. She was fine until one day she just got really sick and couldn't walk. There wasn't even any warning, it was like one day she was healthy and the next we had to put her to sleep. I was the last one to see her alive, I loved her so much I even went to the dog hospital place thing all by myself to say goodbye to her one last time before they were going to put her down. I'm really sorry about your dog, I feel your pain. Don't worry though as time goes on your pain will go away and everything will be fine again.

Sorry for your loss.

I loss my dog a couple of years back. We had her since I was in grammar school. My dog wasn't the friendliest animal to others but she was family. She was there when my dad past away. When my dog got really really sick I took of from work. We were contemplating wether to put her to sleep or not. I held onto my dog for most of the day. When I put her down on her pillow and came back she was gone. Now she's up there with my dad.

I've had to go through this too. My dog Ginger was my best friend, I got her when I was 2 and she was there with me till I was 15. Just remember all of the good times with your dog and remember she lived a good life. There are plenty of dogs that don't get to live a good long life, Rio did.

God must have wanted a great dog.

Aggie, I can't imagine how it feels, but I know that the day is fast approaching when Barney the 18 year old beagle will face a similar fate. I'm very sad for your loss & sorry to hear you had to go through this from afar. As a dog lover, I feel for you & hope you get through this with as little mental anguish as possible.

Aggie, I think most of us feel your pain and loss. I remember when our dog Fluffy, which was a Bichon and lived for 17 years. He got so sick in the end and couldnt walk and was in constant pain, so my parents brought to the pet hospital and they examined him and said he was not going to make it and they had to make the tuff decision to have him put to sleep. My mom was so devisiated and we all just sat there at the table when they came home in silence. It took a few weeks and a new baby puppy to help get over the loss. Hope I helped!

Thank your for the kind words. It really helped, just knowing people understand how I feel makes it a little easier.

I know I'll eventually get a dog when I have a yard and stuff. I used to be sure I wanted another Rott but now I don't know. It may be too hard to have the same breed. And yes, she did live long for a Rottweiler. I beilieve the average age is 8 so she was ancient!

That really blows Ag. I'll never forget how mad I was at my parents when I found out they put my Old English Sheep Dog to sleep when I was eight. He was with me my whole life up to then, but he slowed down quick with a similar situation. I was too young at the time to understand it completely, as it was my first dealing with death. I didn't talk to them for a month. Not one word. They said they were taking him to the vet to help him and returned with the bad news that he died there unexpectedly. I was shelled, yet not convinced. I went through their papers and found some stuff I didn't understand. I looked it all up and asked around to find out that they put him to sleep. Now I understand, but still wish they would have leveled with me and let me say goodbye one last time. Man, it's actually getting to me right now.

Always sorry to hear about these things. It's never easy. :(

I'm really sorry to hear that. I know how bad I felt when my 11 year old beagle, Barney who I had since 1st grade got sick and died. I was devastated. I actually decided that I would never get another dog again because I know how bad it feels when they die. Maybe that's one of the reasons people have kids, they last longer.
