View Full Version : really really dumb computer question
Do you need a DVD Burner to make DVDs? I put my edited footage onto a CD and it played in my DVD player. Now is there any difference from what I did and a DVD, quality wise?

Yes.
I have an HP DVD WRITER 300i and I guess it's alright. It was $150 I think, and I got it last december, it's probably cheaper now. I haven't been able to download and burn anything, but I can decode stuff and reburn it.

Pinnacle Studio version 9, I allready made an MPEG of it but I know for a fact my DVD player doesnt support that type of format. IS there any differnece in the quality between a DVD or a CD R made to play on a DVD player?
Also, Im looking to upload the MPEG to Myspace.com. How do I go about doing that?

Thats actually an older model. Probably no different from whats out now though. I know the last proce I saw it at was about $140.
The cool thing about this software is that it came with this hardware that connects your S-video, Video and Audio to your USB port, and I was just thinking its so easy to rip a DVD now, all I have to do is hook up my DVD player to this thing push play and Im set. However Im not a big DVD fan, nor a movie fan , nor do I have the time to sit down and watch them, but still its pretty coll to think about

You probably made a Video CD. I think that's a different format than MPEG and some DVD players can play it. DVDs are much higher quality than Video CDs. You can probably find DVD burners for under $100, but the DVD themselves are more expensive than CDs.

and getting cheaper. With a little looking around, you should have no trouble getting blank DVDs for under 80 cents apiece.

5% ABOVE? Don't sound like no discount to me!!
Anyway, the answer to your question is Yes you do.
I got a Lite-On DVD burner it is 8x at a computer show over the summer, it was $69 and it works great. I've made many a porno and have made good backups with it. DVD's come in two formats +R and -R, as far as I know the -R format is the "better" format as I've been told because it's been around and accepted more than +R though try to find a recorder that can handle either formats. Where the -R or +R format come into question in reality is when you go to pop the disk into a DVD player and the compatibility to actually play it will come in. I use Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express software and have had no problems with it at all. Plus I got the DVD disks at the computer show and the prices were much cheaper than in the stores. I have yet to have a problem with any of the disks either. Granted I haven't burned as much as I'd like (approx 10-15 disks), though I've had no problems.

5% Above what the store buys the product for not above the price we sell it for. It works out on some stuff like acessories. More than likely they're about 75% off of the selling price. IE a 5 dollar audio cable costs me about 94 cents
