Review: A Dirty Shame http://www.browntownjohnny.com/index.php
The open credit sequence for John Waters' new trash comedy is a great parody of 50's soap films. Then it drops the bomb, a real NC-17 comedy with full frontal nudity (not pleasant) and potty mouthed language. Waters has gone lower in his earlier efforts but this is still grand low-jinks. Is it funny.......Shit-fuckin-A hell yeah! But it is still uneven and stupid in a lot of spots. Waters fans will eat it up like a fur-burger smothered in underwear.
A common theme in Waters later comedies is the war of the classes. "Hairspray" and "Cry-Baby" were the us-against-them classics,"A Dirty Shame" this is the story of sexual freedom (Sex Addicts) vs. decency (The Neuters). Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman is a very talented comic actress) is a working class wife who has lost her sexuality. Her husband Vaughn (rocker Chris Isaac is totally goofy) must jerk his gerkin because Sylvia hates sex. The street they live on is changing over to a bunch of degenerate sex addicts (a funny drive along sequence) that has Big Ethel (NY actress Suzanne Shepard is hilarious) getting the Neuters together to fight indecency. Sylvia gets hit in the head and finds herself needing orgasms by the minute. The whole town is taking the fight to the streets, and the sexual revolution becomes a religious event.
Baltimore is where John Waters makes his movies because he knows the town and the people better than everyone. Funny place to show the local police constable with a big baby fetish (Alan Wendl is a Waters regular) and a fecal freak that poops in a handbag with great glee. All of this is tasteless trash and I'm laughing my balls in a knot. Who will ever look at a big fat hairy guy without thinking about the "Bears" (see the film), and the guy called "Fat Fuck Frank". Johnny Knoxville is cast as the new "Jesus" of addicts named Ray Ray Perkins (very nice perf) and Selma Blair is Sylvia's daughter 'Ursula Udders' (a huge sight gag). All this and a cameo by a known TV icon taking a dump.
A Howard Stern fan (I am) will love it. Any one else will not. Waters best movie since Hairspray. The 'Hokey Pokey" dance scene will hurt you with a gutbusting cheer! Uneven and tasteless! You decide.
