View Full Version : Why does Obi-Wan let himself be killed?

In Episode IV, Obi-Wan lets Vader strike him down?
Why? My theory has always been that Obi-Wan did this to strength the good side of the Force;thereby, counterbalancing the Dark Side of the Force.
I need an expert opinion on this. Thanks.

He said it himself that it would only make him stronger.
If he didn't die he wouldn't have been able to tell Luke to trust his instinct when he had to shoot down the death star.

Cuz he was stupid!!!! "If you stike me down I'll be more powerful than you can every imagine"----Yeah right, after he was killed....did he get anymore powers aside from Luke seeing him? could he still fight? could he kick it to that republic chic? Hell's freaking NO!! And he was getting weaker by the time the last movie came out. What a bum deal those Jedi Master lying all this time to the younger jedi.
But there's a Heaven. So what do I know?

Ben also waited until Luke was there so that he could see Vader do it, thus motivating Luke.

Because of the promise of 40 virgins. But he fucked up cuz he couldn't "touch them" after he was dead. Who knew Obi-Wan was a horney mutherfuker.

Yeah, he couldn't have just gotten on the radio, all safe and cozy back at the good guys' base.
The short answer to ALL Star Wars questions is almost always...Lucas is an idiot.

I always thought it was lame that Obi lets himself get sliced. Plot wise, it just doesnt make sense (like a lot of things in SW). Why wouldn't Obi live a while longer to train & protect Luke. Especially if he knows how valuable Luke really is. At the very least...he should've kept dueling with Darth just so Luke and the gang could more easily slip away.
There really is no rational excuse for a million things in the SW series. We could start a whole thread on SW inconsistancies.

*sigh*
Ok...what furie said was true....he did it to motivate Luke. But he also was aware that had he killed Vader the stormtroopers would have cut him down in a second.
But Obi-wan knew that his connection to Luke via the force would have been unchallenged and he would be able to stay in touch with him no matter where Luke was.
He was able to be Luke's guardian angel. So to speak.
And he did not die...he dissipated his body before Vader could chop him in two.

He comitted suicide "to motivate Luke"??! How so?
Luke was totally on-board with the Force before Bens death. The death of his Aunt & Uncle is what motivated him to "learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi" like his Father.
It do agree that it would've been nearly impossible for Ben to walk all the back to the Falcon w/o getting shot to shit but, still.... he was gonna die anyway. Why NOT take Vader with him? Or to put it another way: why duel w/ Vader at all??! Why would he even draw his sword if he was aware that he could (better) coach Luke from the great beyond? AND wouldn't Vader know that killing Ben would make him "more powerful than he could possibly imagine"? Doesn't he also have full knowledge of the Force? If so...then why
would he strike Ben down?
I'm tired. I must take a nap on my SW sheets now. Get on with your exercises....

He never quite fully recovered from getting beat up by Pip in the movie version of 'Great Expectations'?
He was pissed off at all the Bar Towels with his name?
He thought the light sabers were just a cool thing to whip around while videotaping himself until his friends put the tape on the internet?
Coz Lucas got drunk that day and said, 'Fuck Guiness, we're writing him out.'?

I'm not sure that makes sense. Luke is still untrained at the time and Vader/Anakin is still seduced by the Dark Side.
Are there any true Star Wars aficionados out there that know the answer

with the prequels competely changing our perspective of the storyline, luke is merely bait ...
anakin's destiny is to restore order to the force: when the emperor is about to kill luke, vader kills the emporer, and himself in the process, thereby ridding the jedi world free of the sith master and apprentice ...
in a sense, obi-wan set up luke to facilitate the emperor's death ...
it was obi-wan hope that there was enough good left in vader to switch back ... after loosing him as an apprentice, and the destruction caused in EPIII ... in EPIV, obi-wan sacrafices himself to start the process ... luke begins his training in EPV ... and in the finale, EPVI, luke and vader play their part to bring down the emperor ...

he was motivated to learn the force, sure. but after ben's death he was now motivated to defeat and kill Vader, which i doubt he would have been before. Now he had a personal vendetta against him that continued after luke found out that vader was anakin.

Yeah, what about li'l Obi-Wan and Anakin? The first three are all about them, and they don't get any ghosts.
Maybe Luke was just batshit insane.

Because ROTJ was made in the early 1980's and there was no Qui-Gon Jinn back them.
Obi-wan told Luke in Empire Stikes Back that the jedi that trained him was Yoda, never mentioned Qui-Gon (who he made that promise to to train Anakin who ends up killing everyone except Ben and Yoda, that wanker!)
