View Full Version : American Idiot: The next great rock opera?

I just got the Green Day American Idiot album, but the special edition with journal entries from the characters of the album. When listening to it, I really felt as if it was a really good rock opera, up there with "Tommy" and "A Night at The Opera."
There's talks of making it into a movie.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA??!
Great fucking album but, it's not a "rock opera". It doesn't have a plot, characters or themes. The songs DO flow into one another (at times) but that's it.
I'm def gonna check out AMERICAN IDIOT. The word is that it is a really strong record. Very cool.

once i have the cash i'll get it definitely. I would say that I just want to support them for being so good in the past like I planned with Warning, but Warning was my second or my third favorite of their albums, so they definitely don't seem to be getting any worse. Don't doubt that its awesome.
and i find it kinda funny me and Spicy McHaggis are posting more in the same threads and the sig actually is needed to differentiate us.

i picked it up for my girlfriend the other day ....
haven't heard it yet, but from reading a few things i've read and for no real reason, it kind of reminds me of zen arcade ...
if it's half as good, it'll be worth listening to ...

Definitely. . . . I think Greenday has remained a stong band in a time filled with crap "artisit" making millions of dollars off garbage. I went through the typical "they sold out" routine, but they continued to put out good stuff and remain somewhat true to their roots. Granted this album is a little different from their previous stuff, but I think it's a welcome change.
Beside's my dad listens to some garbage that has to be at least 30 years old.

KOP's right AGAIN! The correct answer is ALWAYS, "the only good rock opera, is a DEAD rock opera."
That said, this album is REALLY good. Green Day has been my dark horse "guilty shame" band for over a decade now, and this album is the perfect example of why I'll keep coming back to them...the guys make perfect pop songs. Once one can stop getting hung up over the pointless "are they punk or not" debate (they're obviously not), you can just sit back and enjoy some flat-out brilliant pop songs. They're definitely like Alice in Chains, in that while they're a great band themselves, they've "inspired" a thousand shitty other bands, and that's really unfair to the "source band."
Their last album, "Warning," is easily one of the best power-pop albums I've ever heard. Great, great band, and if it's shameful I love 'em, then BRAND ME WITH SHAME.

So far Ive heard the songs Blvd of Broken Dreams, American Idiot, and Jesus of Suburbia the first 2 were fairly decent but I was impressed by Jesus of Suburbia, its about 9 minutes. most green day songs are btwn 21/2 and 3 minutes.

The song "American Idiot" just sort of reminds me of something NOFX did already, and better, last year.
That said - it's still a fucking catchy song.

Well, the two 9 minute songs are only technically "single" songs...they're very clearly each 4-5 songs blended together into medleys that work surprisingly well...
KOP, you can't be right ALL the time. NOFX blow. They're like a watered-down Bad Religion, but they're trying to be funny...and failing.

Yes I can...and I am...and I'm funny too...besides, the only point I had was that the single "American Idiot" sounds like what Green Day would write and record after listening to NOFX's "The Idiots are Taking Over."
Don't want to be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation that under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.

Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.

Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.
Don't want to be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.
it's not the right time to be sober
now the idiots have taken over
spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?
Mensa membership exceeding
tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it's really elementary
the industrial revolution
has flipped the bitch on evolution
the benevolent and wise are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
the world keeps getting dumber
insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason
darwin's rollin over in his coffin
the fittest are surviving much less often
now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening
someone flopped a steamer in the gene pool
now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule
and im startin to feel a lot like charlton heston
stranded on a primate planet
apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
with generals and the armies that obeyed them
followers following fables
philosophies that enable them to rule without regard
there's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred
majority rule, don't work in mental institutions
sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions
what are we left with?
a nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists
who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland
pass on traditions
how to get ahead religions
And prosperity via simpleton culture
the idiots are takin over [x8]

So...because they both use the word "idiot?"
Look, if you wanna get technical, both bands just sound like they're ripping off Bad Religion, who were just ripping off Black Flag/Minor Threat...
Both songs have a similar theme, and that's about it. And given that the first one is actually listenable, Green Day wins.

You want a funny punk band--Frenzal Rhomb from Australia. They're everything NoFX should be, but aren't. And the funny thing is Fat Mike loves 'em. They're on FatWreck, and whenever they tour the US, it's with NoFX.

Yes.

I didn't say they ripped it off - I just said it reminded me of a song that I, personally, liked better...which, to be honest, I said as a joke...
joke (jk) KEY NOUN: Something said or done to evoke laughter or amusement, especially an amusing story with a punch line. A mischievous trick; a prank. An amusing or ludicrous incident or situation.
Both songs have a similar theme, and that's about it.
That's about it? That's the whole point - same theme, and they use the word idiot; one came out last year; one just came out.
And given that the first one is actually listenable, Green Day wins.
"American Idiot" is catchy and fun, but I'll prefer a song that using the phrase "a nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland" anyday.

I love NOFX but "American Idiot" really is nothing like "The Idiots Are Taking Over". I know I've heard the latter maybe 100 times since I got the CD. "American Idiot"is much better and i'm sure this album is also better than "War on Errorism". I really believe Green Day deserves to be held up just as high as Nirvana. You can debate whether they're punk or not all you want but they got at least something close to punk on the radio. They brought it to the mainstream and I can guarantee the next great band will cite Green Day as one of the bands that inspired them.

Most overrated band ever. Seems like if a lead singer dies young, somehow the band grows to mythical proportions.

the reason nirvana was that highly rated wasnt that he died, its that he killed himself. i mean fuck, no one cares about Drowning Pool now, and no one holds sublime near as high as nirvana, even though they are thousands of times better
nirvana was ok, they did there thing, had a few good songs, but damn, how can people claim a band that wrote the brilliant lyrical verse of "Rape me, rape me my friend, rape me, rape me again" is ever THAT BIG a deal

If it is the next great anything it is by far the best thing I have gotten this year. Considering I got Ultimate Manilow today as well.
Seriously though I was just floored with how great this album is. Bravo!
It has been interesting watching these guys mature and develop over the years into something really special.
One of the very few bands who take my 4 album theory and put it to shame.

Saw the show yesterday and really enjoyed it. For anyone who liked the American Idiot cd its a must see. Its definitely for a younger audience. Not for the faint of heart, its loud, at times chaotic , sex, drug use, lot of cursing, etc.
Cool story, I felt a range of emotions taking this journey with the cast. The majority of the story is told through music. All of the American Idot is used along wtih a few cuts from 21st century breakdown.
