View Full Version : What kind of Republican will be running in 2008?

Win or lose in November, the Republicans will have maybe a tougher decision of who to run in 2008 than the Democrats will. If the Democrats win, it will be Kerry; if the Democrats lose, it will be Hillary or Edwards.
The Republicans, though, are a trickier lot to predict and second guess:
Not to vote who you would pick, but who do you think will make it through the primaries.
Will it be a moderate, like a John McCain, Chuck Hagel or Rudy Guilliani;
a true conservative like Colorado governor Bill Owens, Pat Buchanan or Jeb Bush;
or a neo-con, like George Allan, Condoleezza Rice or Dick Cheney?

Since 1976 there has been a Bush or Dole on the GOP ticket. It will continue -- with Jeb Bush.
However, I think Pataki could be a contender.

Dick Cheney can't run:
The 22nd Amendment
Section 1.
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,
and no person who has held the office of President, or
acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected
President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President
when this Article was proposed by the Congress,
and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President
, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as
President during the remainder of such term.
Section. 2.
This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution
by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its
submission to the States by the Congress.
Ratification was completed on February 27, 1951.

I don't see Rudy Guilliani winning....at least in the South (unless he had a southerner on his ticket).
How was Guilliani viewed before 9-11????
Didn't he cheat on his wife or something? What was his standing within the Afro-american, Hispanic and minority community?
Me myself....I would vote for John McCain.

I don't think a moderate republican has a chance, unless people get really disgusted with the lot. "The Contract with America" issued in a seismic shift in the GOP in 1994 that really gave the conservatives and neo-cons a strong footing of influence in the party.
However, I think Pataki could be a contender.
George Pataki would be a really strong choice - which pigeon hole would he fit in?

A lot of moderate Democrats would vote for McCain, even though he is pro-life. Even after 9/11, Southerns can't stand that Guilliani is a cheater, pro-choice, pro-gay, and "pro-minority" from "New York City."

If Guilliani wins......does that mean they'll build a new staduim in D.C. for the Yankees???
I don't re-call him being "pro-minority" in NYC?? Is that for real??

Northeast Republicans tend to be more centrist/moderate.

Pro-Minority? What, so George Bush and Bill Clinton got elected because they were anti-minority?

If George doesn't win in November, then he can run again in '08, which means that we can't sort him out just yet!

Every American should be familiar with the Constitution and how the government works:
"The legislature's job is to write law. It's the executive branch's job to interpret law" (G.W.Bush-Nov. 22, 2000).

Anyone who's a regular here knows that I'm a McCain die-hard, so he's my natural choice. Giuliani is radically left socially, so I see him as a running mate, but probably not a Presidential candidate. As for McCain's age, I'll say it again: Age means nothing.
a true conservative like Colorado governor Bill Owens, Pat Buchanan or Jeb Bush
Pat ain't coming back, and good riddance. Fucking isolationist racist silver-shirt asshole. If Jeb intended on running, he would have showed up at the convention this year. He did have the Hurricane, but I just don't think he's going to run.

It's funny you should have a separate section for John McCain and the neo-cons, since McCain is a neo-con in a lot of ways. He had their support in the 2000 primary and his views on certain issues are the same positions that neo-cons get in trouble for saying.
McCain has the broadest support in the country. His moderate stance on issues will win him support in the Northeast as has already been mentioned, but he has a fairly consistent conservative record on social issues like abortion. Couple that with his military service and his shoot from the hip style, and he will have a very easy time in the South and the Midwest.

Even though I can't believe anybody lost to Bush, I especially can't believe McCain lost to Bush.

With McCain I have to go person over ideology. I like John McCain and considering America won't be looking how i'd like it within like 50 years, he'd be a great choice in my mind. I'd probably vote for him over Kerry, might against Edwards, and definitely against Hillary.
I don't think Giuliani will be chosen for presidential material because of all the reasons already stated, Cheney's obviously too old (although he can run, stupid), Condy Rice is black AND a woman (AND seems like a bitch), and Jeb Bush really is cursed by his name. I hear that he really inherited the family smarts and manners, but no one named Jeb can become president. It's gotta be somewhere in like the 9th Ammendment or something and if not we should make it 26.
