I don't know about sleeping, but everytime I sprain my back, I find that just lying on the floor helps alot.

Having had 5 back surgeries I'm somewhat an expert of this topic.
A good firm comfortable mattress is the way to go.
For maximum relief lie on your side with a pillow between your knees, and your legs bent into a slight fetal position.
Another option is to lie flat on your back with a pillow under your knees.
The pillow is essential because it shortens the pathway of the sciatic nerve, making it stretch less and causing less pain.
Fentanyl works too.
