For soul music, grab some Al Green, Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin. Once you've digested that, it's time for the Spinners and Delfonics. As for funk, the quickest way to amass a solid collection is by purchasing the Funk Box:

You want the funk, you got it...I have a slightly different take on what has been listed:

The Meters (start with 'Rejuvenation')...not only is it super-funky, but they are sorta-kinda pioneers of New Orleans funk and that album has possibly the best cover of any album, period!!!
Booker T and the MGs (start with the 'Hip Hug her' album)...some may argue if this is funk or not, but I say yes. Its old school, Its funky and there is no better band to have a bong handy if its cold and rainy outside and you have nothing else to do.
Anything live by Phish in 1998 (start with the Island Tour)...you can download it off their site and I defy anyone to argue the merits of Phish's live funk in the late 1990s.
The Beastie Boys.....hold on, before you say, "huh???" check out, 'the Mix-Up'...its real a fun and funky album.
Galactic.....another New Orleans band, but they have only been playing for a little over ten years now....Great NEW SCHOOL funk and a great live band if you ever want to see them.
Medeski, Martin and Wood...no need to explain, just buy anything form them, like 'Shack Man.'
and finally, another great live band and relatively new, The New Mastersounds. These guys are from England and can play the hell out of some funk. They are primarily an instrumental act an they just GET IT DONE live.

Have fun and hopefully the funk grabs you.:smoke:

As far as soul goes, start with these:
Otis Redding
Lou Rawls
Johnny Adams
Sam Cooke (he should be listed first on ANY list, sorry)
Bennie Spellman
Ben E. King-----check out Supernatural thing
Ray Charles
Junior Kimbrough
Lightin' Slim
Doc & Merl Watson
Cedric Burnside
GATEMOUTH
The Word
North Mississippi Allstars

Nothing FAST is funky. Nothing.
If it's got that chanka chank chank right-hand guitar player, at 100 miles an hour, turn that shit off immediately.

Slower = better.
