So Joshie is a huge civil war buff. So much so that he dresses up in a full civil war outfit and actively takes part in civil war re-enactments. As the news story (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=8&u=/ap/20041013/ap_on_fe_st/civil_war_arrest_1) goes, after the event he threw the uniform in his trunk, which also included a replica musket. He forgot that he left the uniform and the gun in his car and went to school. A security guard sees the musket in his car, and calls the police. Joshie gets in much trouble and now he's charged with a misdemeanor.

Do you think the school acted appropriately, or went too far? Is the kid at fault?

Phelps was sitting in study hall when the security guard told him to go to the assistant principal. When he was told they saw the rifle he wasn't concerned - thinking they would understand it's part of his costume.


But it didn't happen that way. Town of Crawford Police were called and Phelps was cuffed and charged with a misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a weapon.

He'll probably get off without much consequence. But, people have got to take responsibility for the stupid things we do, and that's pretty damn stupid. I don't think the school went too far given the paranoia today that has security guards in our schools.

I agree, I think that their response was appropriate as well. Perhaps in hindsight they ultimately went a little too far with it, but I'd rather know that school security is doing what they're being paid to do, and that is to protect the kids.

The school acted appropriately by inquiring about the gun, but went to far by calling the police.

This is a high school. Do you think he could dress up like a civil war soldier and still just be known as Josh? No, he'd have some knickname that everyone would know he is the dork who plays war on the weekends.

He would be at fault if he left it on his car seat, but the article says he put the gun in his trunk. How did the security guard get inside his trunk?
