To an extent, but that one won't knock out Kerry. I think the Dukakis tank thing has been overblown in the historical perspective, but it was a rather dumb attempt on his campaign's part to prove his defense credentials. The fact that he looked funny in the hat didn't help.
In the end, one image or quote or anything won't sink a candidacy unless it's absolutely egregious. They are won or lost over the long term.

If images can ruin a candidate then it's not the candidate that's ruined but the public. If the best thing we can do to get our guy elected is to show silly-looking photos of the other guy then we no longer deserve democracy.

I don't think a giant pumpkin would ruin a candidate's campaign. If it was a giant lemon on the other hand...well that would just be too weird...
