Here's a hypothetical....In baseball, can a pitcher throw to first or third, even if no one is on base?

If not, what would the ramification be?

while on the mound the pitcher cant throw to an unoccupied base or its a balk. if hes not on the rubber then he can throw anywhere he wants

So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life

So if he did for some odd reason balk with no one on, does that mean the guy at the plate gets to go to first?

no, he doesn't, so technically there really is no ramification....I believe it would be considered a delay of game, in which case I don't know the penalty for that either

Yeah it would be a delay of game and the batter would get a ball.

really? if a pitcher is in his windup and slips and decides to hold onto the ball, i don't think they count that as a ball. maybe i'm wrong.

He can if he is appealing whether or not a runner tagged the base.

I think.

No that's different. He would not be delaying the game on purpose. Throwing to a base for no reason would be obvious and therefore considered a delay. Here is the rule:

When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 20 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call "Ball." The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays. The umpire shall insist that the catcher return the ball promptly to the pitcher, and that the pitcher take his position on the rubber promptly. Obvious delay by the pitcher should instantly be penalized by the umpire.

after reading the rule, there should be alot more automatic balls called. some pitchers take so long to actually throw a pitch.

is there a similiar rule for batters who delay to much...like an automatic strike. they need to do something to speed these games up. I spend two mintues a pitch watching a guy adjust his helmet, then batting gloves, adjusts his cup...then he puts his back leg in the box, shakes it around a bit then right before he is about to put his second foot into the box, he calls for time.

its kind of like in basketball on free throws aren't you only suppose to get 10 seconds once you have the ball in your hand. Karl Malone take about 15-20 everytime he shoots one. the crowds actually chant out a count, but nothing ever gets called.

Yeah, that rule isn't enforced in the slightest.

The main ramification of a pitcher throwing to an empty base would be him being called a doofus.

Furthermore, I believe a pitcher is not allowed to bark on the mound. Unless that pitcher is Lassie.
