Superman has been cast. (http://www.suntimes.com/output/movies/cst-ftr-super19.html)

And here's your man of the hour.

I like the unkown factor, like they did with Chris Reeve. I know for a fact I wouldn't have liked it if they had cast some star.

At least it's not Jim Caviezel. Playing Jesus went to his head, imagine playing superman too!

I like the unkown factor, like they did with Chris Reeve.

That's the way to go if you want to make a good movie, not a star's vehicle to more fame.

Don't be suprised if they replace this actor with someone else before production actually begins. I think they will change their minds and hire an established actor. It's all aboot putting asses in the seats.

Well yes and no.

X-Men did relatively well with an unknown, Hugh Jackman.
Spiderman did well with little well known Tobey Macguire.

They chose Eric Bana as the Hulk.
Even Christian Bale is not really an A list actor.

A movie like Superman doesn't need a famous name to put asses in the seats. It's well known
enough.

They probably want to avoid making this look like a TV movie. Like when that TV Highlander Guy was in a Highlander Film (but they sucked after #1 anyway, so It really didn't matter too much)

It would be nice for a guy who plays Superman to actually get to wear a Superman Costume and Fly.

That's what I've been thinking all along - while I never seek out SMALLVILLE, whenever I catch it, it seems good enough, and that they are doing some fun stuff. Just finish the series off in a few seasons, and spin off that guy.

That's probably not gonna happen.

And to expand on the John Williams and Superman gone for a while themes: Singer wants to use the same opening music as the Donner films. In fact, he's using the first 2 movies as the history for this one. Apparently Krypton and the Fortress of Solitude will be exactly the same design as before.

Writer Dan Harris said, "He'll begin in his late 20s. He lost his powers in 'Superman 2' and now he has the powers back. But something has happened because he's been away for a long time...We're taking off from the first two Superman films with Christopher Reeve. We use his history and then move on with big twists and great special effects. We're not going to do the origin story again. Our view is if you're over 25 years old, then you've seen the Reeve films and that's Superman to you. If you're under 25, then you watch TV's 'Smallville,' and that's Superman to you".

The problem with making him in his late 20's is that he left home at 18 and stayed in the FOS (roaming space and time) for approx 12 years (I forget what his father said) and aged him to 30.

Latest from the rumour mill

Famke Janssen's meeting with director Bryan Singer down under was for Superman Returns, and she has snagged the role of Lora, the birth mother of The Man Of Steel, while Daniel Day-Lewis has gotten the role of his birth father, Jor-El.

As for the other villians, Jude Law has finally signed on as General Zod, and Kevin Bacon (Mystic River, Apollo 13) has signed as John Corbin.

I'm not too impressed by the picture, but they went with a stupid camera angle. His face has a goofy expression. But, I was impressed with the Clark picture, so I'll reserve judgement until the trailer.

I hope it looks better on-screen. I'm surious why the costume
doesn't show any muscle definition. Then again, I would have
released a better picture, like one of the iconic images of Superman.

I see someone watched the Making of Spiderman features on the DVDs.

They took the idea of having a fabic with some kind of subtle pattern on it and having raised logos glued onto the suit. And it looks small to me as well, Is the Red part of the S supposed to be Carbon Fiber or something?

The boots that Chris Reeve wore were better, and maybe it's just that one picture, but the red isn't very red anymore...

I wish I could find a better full lenght picture.

I complained about the X-Men costumes when I first saw them, later on I realized that it's hard to re-create comix book images in real life, but Christopher Reeve was able to do it.
One of the things that make me worry about this movie is the fact that they are tying it to the to the Richard Donner films, not that they were bad films for the time but Superman has changed since then more Human less Krypton. This movie should be more Batman Begins then a continuation of those movies

Those two first Superman movies kicks some serious ass, and outside of the incredibly dated special effects, still hold up as two of the best, if not THE best, comic book films of all time. I have no problem with them setting this film further down the storyline of those films, especially since they're completely ignoring 3 and 4 like they never existed.

I finally saw the mini trailer during Smallville and I cannot wait. It just seems a little misleading. The original music with Marlon Brando's voice over gave me goose bumbs, but will it actually be in the film?

Superman himself does look a little "gay", but I can get past that. He does not seem bad. I only wish Tom Welling was Superman.

Smallville seems to be one of the only shows that I watch that consistantly gets better every season. I'm just waiting for a young Wonder Woman or Green Lantern to stop by The Kent Farm to help fill out the J.L.A appearances.

Well, the real problem is that between the 1st and 2nd films, there's a great film that's been butchered. Richard Donner shot the first film and most of the 2nd one all at once, with the idea of a possible 3 hr. LOTR-esque Superman epic, but they ended up getting pulled apart and re-edited with new scenes shot by a different director and tacked on. Everything with Hackman was shot under Donner...he never was filmed for anything else in the 2nd after the 1st film. And dude, that IS Luthor. If anything, I only wanted him to be more of a mad scientist, but that's it. "Yuppie scum/Kingpin ripoff" Luthor of the last 20 years in the comics sucks HARD. Thank the Lord Grant Morrison is writing with the classic crazy scientist Lex in his new All-Star Superman series.

He also wouldn't trust Tessmacher in the least once he realized that her mother lived in Hackensack.

And in II, he was played for humor even more.

I'm biased because it's Hackman and in my eyes he can do no wrong.

I'll give you having the bumbling henchpeople in the first one made no sense, but I still love how Luthor is in the second one. Talking smack to Zod, playing all the sides off of each other, doublecrossing and triplecrossing everyone...if he was just making some kind of kryptonite powered robot in the middle of it, it would have been perfect.

And some of the jokes fall flat, but what's wrong with some humor? It's Superman...it's supposed to be more "bright." Leave the grim 'n' gritty to Batman.

How much do you want to bet that they imply that Lois' kid is Superman's in some way?. Which I really hope they don't do. The fact that this is supposed to be Superman 3 really makes me nervous. I wish they just did a relaunch using John Byrne's Man of Steel as the template instead of the whole Superman has been gone for awhile angle. That being said I really cant wait to see this now, the shuttle rescue scene is supposed to be amazing (not the plane in the trailer)

dean cain was a rip off. the dude in smallville is cool as Superman. Reeve was Superman. Hands down. Great casting, considering the big names that past on it.

I will admit that when i saw Walk The Line there was a trailer for Superman, I got teary eyed when I saw it. The first image of him in the clouds, i thought for just a second that it was Reeve. My chick leaned over to me and said "you dont cry when people die, you dont wence at pain, but a 6-2 guy in a blue suit makes you weep like a child, i love you." then i just needed to be held.

Explanation:

Just like Williams is the "personal" conductor for Lucas and Spielberg, Ottman is the personal conductor for Bryan Singer.

He scored Usual Suspects, X-2, and other films.

Superman's theme is iconic. Just like Vader's, just like Indy's, and to a less extent, Batman by Elfman. So I think they did the smart move in "covering" the theme, rather than producing a new piece.

The main theme is not the ONLY cue taken from the original Williams score. There are quite a few nods to themes from the original soundtrack. The Martha Kent "Smallville" theme and the Lois Lane/ "Can You Read My Mind Theme" are also paid an homage. There is also a variation on the flying-to-earth theme from the original movie. It's not note for note but...it's definitely the inspiration for some cues on this soundtrack.

The original soundtrack is sooo damn good. Maybe even better than "Raiders". Smart move to tie it in to this new incarnation of Supes.

I thought the movie was amazing - I'm really glad I muddled through the first two movies on DVD recently, because it's clear that they had studied those films - Lois' smoking, her not able to spell, the old red truck in Kansas, Glen Ford's picture on the piano, the goosepimpling music and opening credits, Marlon Brando, the lines parrotted from the first movies ("What was the last thing my father said to me?"/Superman's speech by the kid's bed). Now that they have done it, i'm happy they basically kept with the movie continuity rather than try and reinvent it one more time ("Smallville," "Lois & Clark" etc).

Luther stealing the crystals was (now) an obvious choice for a direction to go into, and Spacey did a fantastic job as someone who doesn't care about the deaths of billions. Love the touches to classic "iconic" Superman ("Look up in the sky!"/the Action #1 cover recreation/"Great Caesars Ghost!") - and that airplane rescue was one of the best things like that I've maybe ever seen done on film, even if the resolution reminded me Bugs Bunny's crashing airplane that stops because it runs out of gas.

Superman has always been about his need to be the world's savior and his wanting to be with Lois, and I personally thought this movie continued along those lines treating both equally well.

MAJOR Geek Points for anyone who noticed Jack Larson as the bartender (he was the original television Jimmy Olsen - and according to IMDB he reprised that role in "Lois and Clark") or Noel Neill as the old lady (t.v.'s original Lois Lane) - I thought she might have been Margot Kidder under make-up, but no - no geek points for me on either, actually.

Question:

What is the BFD about that stupid article that Lois wrote? Why in the HELL would it win a Pulitzer Prize?? The whole movie is based around it and I think it's a retarded premise.

"Why The World Doesn't Really Need Superman" ??

Umm, maybe because he prevented squillions of crimes all over the planet! When he went on his little lay-a-way with Lois FOR ONE DAY the world almost ended thanks to General Zod. The Eiffel Tower incident, the helicopter incident (which, by the way, saved Lois' ass), the earthquake, etc etc. Why would anyone even READ that article, much less buy into it...much less award it the Pulitzer?

And, while I'm at it....he's SUPERMAN damn it. It never occured to Lois that maybe he had business to take care of on some other planet, or that maybe he somehow died , OR that he was abducted, OR SOMETHING? All she could think of was "Superman never said goodbye so...now I hate him and I'm gonna shack up with this guy at work IMMEDIATELY"

The whole Lois thang really bugged me in this new movie. Screw her.

Can I ask a few more questions about this retarded Superman movie?

In Superman II, he kisses Lois TO MAKE HER FORGET EVERYTHING. If that is the case...why is he so suprised to learn that she has moved on with her life after 5 years?

He hypnokissed her to make her forget, THEN he left for 5 years without giving an explanation. NOW he's hurt that her life doesn't include him?! That's just plain stupid.

Also, in Superman II, he "left' for a few days to have super-sex with Lois. When he comes back, he promises the president that he'll "never leave again". Then....he leaves. What gives?

And...why exactly did he leave? Why did he feel compelled to go to the empty space where Krypton used to be? What was the reason for even making that journey? AND...why does the trip kick his ass? When he comes back to Smallville (at the beginning of this new movie) he looks like he's gonna die. He looks like he could barely survive the trip back from Krypton. But...in Superman '78, the little baby survived the trip just fine, thank you. He's clean and happy and even lifts his fathers pickup truck with a smile on his face!

The more I think about this movie....the more I hate it.

I'm aware that it sounds nitpicky....all I'm saying is, the writers took the easy way out.

They had the option to give Superman a legit reason to leave for a length of time. He could've had SOMETHING heroic to do in one of the other 28 galaxies. Maybe a 'Star Trek" type mission where he needed to examine other worlds. They could've done someting with traveling the speed of light made everyone 5 years older and, for him, it was only a fraction of that time. WHATEVER! In my opinion, going to see the burned out remains of a planet that he knows exploded over 30 years ago is NOT a sensible reason.

The whole movie hinges on the fact that he A) left and B)came back. They really should've put more energy into his motivations for doing both. That's all I'm sayin'.

I think you're just trying to hate it at this point.

He left because he might be able to find something about his heritage. The guy's friggin' home planet blew up when he was a baby...he's not going to be curious to see if there's anything left? The Kryptonians were incredibly advanced technologically...if big chunks of the planet were intact, maybe some of them had somehow survived (as we have seen in the comics). The motivation for him wanting to check it out really isn't that much of a stretch...what I'll agree with is that if this is supposedly a sequel to the first 2 films, no, we haven't been given anything to show why he would leave so suddenly and without warning. But in the overall scope of all 3 films, it works.

As for him coming back, I'm assuming he found nothing, or at least thought he didn't. Hopefully, Singer is smart enough to realize he can easily use this scenario to setup a perfect intro for a Brainiac/Eradicator-type villain.

I just saw it on Sunday. The SFX were great and seamless. The acting was well done. My major problem was the story line. I personally thought the first 2 movies were shitty in comparison to the storylines we are used 2 now. I was much happier with the way the new Batman was done in comparison. It was almost a superhero chick flick.

That sucks...just let him edit together his parts of 1 & 2 into a single giant film, like The Godfather Saga. Easily would be the greatest comic book film of all time.

Yes, the new Superman II dvd will have the restored footage:

If BRYAN SINGER has any say in the matter, another Superman flick will be in theaters in the summer of 2009. The director told fans Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego that he'd been in talks with Warner Bros. Pictures about possibly helming a sequel to the current Superman Returns. Even though everything is still tentative with Superman, Singer is interested in keeping the franchise alive. He was quoted as saying, "I plan to get all Wrath of Khan on it," -- a reference to 1982's Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, which is generally considered as having breathed life into the Star Trek film franchise after the critics panned Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. Meanwhile, in other Man of Steel news, TV Guide Online reports that all four Superman films will be released on DVD on November 14th. The highlight of the set will be a revised cut of Superman II, which changed directors in the middle of filming. Those in the know will recall that RICHARD LESTER took over for RICHARD DONNER midway through the shoot, and in so doing gave the film a more comical angle.
Donner, though, had the final say about incorporating his original but never-used footage, which includes a never-before-seen beginning, a different ending and 15 minutes' worth of MARLON BRANDO scenes that look deeper into Jor-El's bond with his super son.

According to today's (Wednesday) London Times, the film will include 15 minutes of previously unseen footage of Marlon Brando as Superman's father, Jor-El. The film also employs footage from Donner's screen tests and numerous alternate sequences. In fact, according to the Times, the film uses less than 20 percent of the footage shot by Lester. A spokeswoman for Warner Home Video told the newspaper that the new film was made possible because producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind, who fired Donner, sold their interest in the film to Time Warner. A critic for Britain's Empire magazine who viewed the new version said that it was plagued with continuity problems arising from the fact that Donner was forced to make do with footage on hand, including the screen-test footage. "It's patchy (Reeve's hairstyle changes from shot to shot), badly lit and stagy, but watching Reeve's performance is electrifying," according to the Empire review.
