The use of robots around the home to mow lawns, vacuum floors and manage other chores is set to surge sevenfold by 2007 as more consumers snap up smart machines, the United Nations said. (http://apnews.excite.com/article/20041020/D85R9LJ80.html)

http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/ap/thumbnails//SWITZERLAND_UN_ROBOTS.sff_GNV101_20041020123558.jp g

Anyone getting a robot?

The term "robot" covers any machine that operates automatically to perform tasks in a human-like way, often replacing the human workers who did the job previously. In most cases, robots move under their own propulsion and do not need to be controlled by a human operator after they have been programmed.

And they'll wonder why an army of Terminators is wiping out humanity.

You killed everyone in the neighborhood! I just asked you to mow the lawn!

Robots arent following the path of most technology.

Seems to me most new technology go through a list, and the top two:

1. Can we use this new technology to Kill?

2. Can we use this new technology in Porn?

Meaning; Where are the Robot Sex Dolls?!?!?!

Do you have anything with more of a Lucy Liu feel to it?

Na, nothing like that, although we have Lucy Liu.

I had a Robot. It played video games, moved spinning tops and was a pretty good baby sitter. Here's a pic of my Robotic Operating Buddy (R.O.B. for short).

That game would be "Impossible Mission" on the Commodore 64. You basically had to jump around the screen to get out of the room while avoiding robots. After every few boards or so you'd hear this voice actor say:

"Get him, my robots."

or

"Stay awhile, stay forever!"

Voice sampling was pretty rare for C64 games.

It was a great game for the C64 . This thread reminded me of that game.

I am very active in the field of robotics, even doing a small amount of government research at MIT.

They stuff we have in labs is just plain awesome. but it is tethered to about 50 cables and huge computers. the processing power is getting better, but now battery life is a huge problem.

maybe with fuel cells or some other source of power, it will provide an even bigger leap forward. they have robots that can walk on 2 feet, or even 1 leg and balance by hopping.

speach reconition and other basic human attributes are becoming more of a reality, but still no where near perfect.

my little robot that i built has such limited functionality (due to monitary contraints on my end) but it is still very cool and people still freak out when the see it. i am workign now on teaching it to see color using an old digital camera as its eye.

the number of lines of code to get it to work are just staggering. just to be able to walk (4 legs) is over 500 lines of basically assembly code.
