View Full Version : How do you store your DVDs?

My collection is getting nuttier and nuttier by the week - the Best Buy folks almost know me by name, I'm in there every Tuesday getting my stuff.
I've got a large closet, with two small Ikea booksheleves filled to the brim. The upper parts of the closer are also getting filled, and I've recently relocated some of the DVDs to other smaller bookshelves outside the magic video closet.
I try and attempt to thin the heard every once in awhile, but I'm afraid it's a losing battle.
Anyone have any suggestions? Ideas? I'm REALLY not big on putting the DVDs out of their cases and into notebooks, but that may be the way to go.

With hope you never have to look at your DVD collection, then your wallet, and go, "Hmmm, looks like I'll be selling DVDs today at the Flea Market. Either that or no money for the week, ya know?"
My advice, try to fall out of love with your collection. I dont mean that in a bad way; you shoulda seen the collection of Laserdiscs I had; it was Love, traded a few with Kevin Smith doncha know; when the LaserDisc commentary on Chasing Amy began with the phrase "Fuck DVD!" from KS. I bet he's changed his mind.
My rule at these points: if you havent watched it in X months; get rid of it. I got rid of 100+ DVDs, and I couldnt list a dozen of them, I end up not missing them. I got my core of must-have's, and with netflix and rentals, I dont buy DVDs retail anymore anyway. Last one was ummm... Alien Quadrilogy I think.
I feel for ya tho, I look at my DVDs and go, 'NO! I cant get rid of The Planet of the Apes Box Set! What if someone comes over and feels the need to see Conquest Of? Or Beneath The? Arrrrgh!!!
At one point in my CD collection I had six different versions of Dark Side of the Moon, from The MFSL Disc to the 24 bit to the 25th anniversary to the ones in box sets... for me it was a disease.
The format's gonna change radically sooner as opposed to later, it happened with LaserDisc, and DVDs, at least with This technology, are gonna be obsolete... ummm... how about November 26, 2007. Theres a guess.

I've been there - books, vhs, even some dvds. Yup - yup = yup.
Everything you said makes total sense, and whenever I read my buddhist shit I do go through and just get rid of everything. My current rule is - everything I own must fit *here* (and not my ass); if it gets too snug, then I have to get rid of it.
Eventually movies all movies will be stored on hard drives, but damn - I do love stuff.

binders will adhere to the dvd/dvd label with time and are not good long term storage solutions.
I have shelves to store my dvds.

I try that, as a rule of thumb, but then after awhile has passed and I have bunch of stuff that I haven't even opened out of the plastic yet.

Actually on the Chasing Amy dvd he comments on the fact that he said "Fuck DVD!" on the laserdisk and that he didn't know what he was thinking when he said that. It's actually kind've funny.

I use shevles for my DVDs. Though I keep my pornos in special dvd binders so my girls Ass to girls Mouth videos aren't just hanging out for my niece and nephew to stumble upon when they're over. Who needs them to accidently pick up Blews Clues, or Shaving Ryan's Privates, or whatever other girls sucking cum out of another chicks ass video I may have in the player at the time.

On a bookshelf next to the tv. And on the floor around the bookshelf. And in the entertainment center. And on the floor under the entertainment center. And behind the tv on the entertainment center. And on the coffee table. And on the dining room table.
I also try to lend as many as possible out at a time because that cuts down on it a lot too.

He knew what he was saying. His reason for saying that was because he was really into laserdiscs, had alot of them and didn't want to have to rebuy all his movies.

Wow my prediction was WAY Late: SELL Curtoid SELL!!!!
TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- Japan's Toshiba Corp.said Wednesday it would introduce notebook computers with HD DVD technology in the last quarter of 2005 in a move to pressure rivals in the battle over formats for next-generation DVDs.
Toshiba's move comes after Sony said in September that its next-generation PlayStation console, tentatively called PlayStation 3, would support Blu-ray technology, giving a boost to the competing Blu-ray camp.
Both HD DVD and Blu-ray technologies use blue laser light, which, with a shorter wavelength than the red light used in conventional DVD recorders, can handle data at the higher densities needed for high-definition recordings.

It would only be natural for PS to support Sony's own technology.

I got a couple cubes of the slimline CD cases, transfered the DVD's from those huge wasteful cases to the slimlines, and stored the cases away in case I care later. To label them, I used a labelmaker, print out the name of the movie with some extra space on the end. Peel back just enough paper to expose the sticky on the blank area, and stick it to the edge of the case so it extends like a flag. Put each one a label width lower than the previous DVD, and they don't block your view of each other. You should be able to fit closer to 200 DVD's per small Ikea rack that way.
