$650 MILLION DOLLARS GOODER! (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041020/sp_nm/media_xmsatellite_dc_20)

Damn, son! That's nearly a BILLION DOLLAR DEAL! And it's very intriguing. Think about being able to listen to every single game in the country.

I mentioned this in the MLB Playoff thread last night, but did anyone else see those fat XM Satellite Radio ads behind homeplate at the game?

Looks like O&A picked the right place to be. Sorry Howard! ...Siriusly!

Sometime early last week (or the week before) on the O&A show Norton went off about Sirius and how their NFL deal which isn't nearly as good a deal as the MLB deal is for XM. It was pretty funny. I've never been a big fan of listening to football games on the radio, it doesn't play as well on the radio as baseball does. Go XM!

that might knock me off the fence and commit to satellite ...

true that, but ya gotta admit the potential TSL makes it 'bigger' by definition, if not reality.

I think this is a good deal for XM, way better than football. fotball = 20 days per year (every sunday) and so many games being played at the same time.

Baseball is spread out over 160ish games. way more to listen to and choose from.

it looks like the Sirius hole keeps geeting deeper

That would probably get me as well.

Are there line of site issues? Don't you have to have an antenna that can see outside facing a certain direction so that your equipment can communicate with the Satellite?

I would be more likely to get satellite radio for MLB than NFL. Why? Because I have a better chance of being able to see a Redskins game broadcast in NY than I do an Orioles game.

That said, I'm still not taking the satellite plunge. If R&F end up on satellite eventually, I'll probably go with whatever company has them.

Yeah, but there is no mistaking that baseball plays much better on the radio than football does. Being in a car stuck in traffic I'd rather tune into a baseball game any day of the week than putting on a football game. I agree with you in regards to football being more popular perhaps on television, but for radio baseball is the shiznits.

I feel like a damn undecided voter here. I don't care too much about Howard Stern. I have a Sirius compatable car radio. I don't care about O&A. What I want is Sporting News Radio which is on both. . . so I really just want the more viable brand. I don't know if both can co exist in the long run. Hopefully.

When I was grounded I would not be allowed to watch tv or even leave my room unless I were going to the bathroom or eating a meal. Radio was the only thing I had, which was when I also discovered O&A way back when, I would depend on listening to the games every night on the radio. There was a point where I actually liked "watching" the radio better than actually watching the game on tv. For something like a championship series I'd rather watch on TV but I still think baseball is just as gooder as baseball on tv.

Most guys stop what they're doing and watch football all day long. Also, as Mikey says, it's easier to find all teh games on tv. With 162 games, it's more likely people will listen to a game in passing than football.

True, the NFL is more popular. But compare a few hundred football games to 2400 baseball games, and you can see how XM would benefit. You can listen to your fav. baseball team's 160+ games in a year as opposed to a little over a dozen for football.

My grandfather was a huge baseball fan, and when his eye-sight went, he listened religiously to the radio. Even in the hospital room before he died, he had two radios by his bed, as he listened to Kansas City Royals on one, and the local Wichita minor league team on the other.

My folks, on the other hand, love football, could care less about baseball, and have missed seeing Redskins games since they moved back to Kansas. They sometimes will get an internet feed, and listen that way, but mostly they are SOL.

Personally, I love both pro football & baseball (and pro hockey), and have listened to both on the radio from time to time - usually when driving around this area, but also in other cities. One of my favorites was a Steelers broadcast I enjoyed when I was driving back from Pittsburgh - the announcers were hysterical.

ALL OF THAT SAID...NFL is America's team, and is more attractive to more average people.

However, neither MLB or the NFL broadcasts are enough to make me, personally, pick one over the other. I really think both are being foolishing spending the kind of money like they are.

its a million to break even right? he better bring in 1.5 to make some noise for the stock

Nick, that number is from Sirius itself. On the Smoking Gun website there's a letter of intent or something for the SEC, and Sirius says the fixed operating costs, per year, for the HS Show on Sirius to be... 100 million dollars.

I was like 'What the Fuck?' 100mill? a year? But that's their number. Sirius is indeed betting the farm on Howard with that kind of cost.

From TSG:

OCTOBER 6--Howard Stern's defection from the broadcast dial to satellite radio--announced on air this morning--will net the King of All Media a financial windfall and cost Sirius Satellite Radio a whopping $100 million during each year of the five-year deal. In a new Securities and Exchange Commission filing, a copy of which you'll find below, Sirius reports that annual costs for the Stern venture will be "approximately $100 million per year" when the deal begins on January 1, 2006. That sum includes Stern's salary, stock, and incentive payments, and production and operating costs associated with his program. Sirius estimates that it will recoup the massive Stern payout through the "incremental" addition of one million new subscribers. (3 pages)

and TSL = Time Spent Listening, it's an Arbitron calculation in the ratings book. Like someone else said, 17 weeks of 17 games vs how many long baseball is and 160 [?] games? Thats a big potential audience.

this's gonna get more interesting. In 15 months, a lot more will happen, a car line will include one of these as standard equip, if not already. Walkman type one sounds like a logical step; in terms of antenna SKW I'm not sure, my new Crutchfield catclog has whats looks like a roof mount Antenna for one of both of these systems. I'm not surw how strong and how 'directional' the signal is.

=

On another note: To show that even in 2004, even with Cable, 'terrestrial TV' simply because it is so available is such that Double the number of people watched the premiere episode of the new "Desperate Housewives" or whatever its called, then watch the Finale episode of Sex and the City.

I forget cables penetration, but still, many just dont get HBO and Cinemax, and the prem channels. Two different media, but, again the big Q: Will peeps pony up the $$$$???

You guys are missing a couple of vital points. One, many more people are fans of out of town football teams than baseball teams which would cause people to get it in the first place. Ex. I live in Princeton and can barely get the Jets on ESPN radio as I do my regular bullshit. If I get sirius this is a big bonus. Baseball is 162 games, the only games that you must get are the last week if your team is in the hunt. Football every game is life and death. Two. Fantasy Football. If you don't understand this point, you haven't played. It has become so popular it has changed the way TV broadcasts Football games. Three, Football talk is 365 days of the year in most of the country now and is more popular with the under 40 set. Ex- NFL Draft.

For example: Kindest Regards, Your Name

even if it is boring, people gonna wanna listen in cars, if they cant see the game, which of course brings in the TV equipped car issue. Sure I'd rather watch Howard on TV too [not him so much, but anyone screwed up in porn being interviewed while naked and stoned] but out on the road, ya get what ya can get.

Yeah and yer right about year round NFL radio. The off-off-off season Redskins Radio just seems like such a waste. But, some will wanna hear it.

And you mentioned local programming, which I believe is another thorny issue for the systems: how much local will the person be able to get, even if they live in NY, and are out in Sheboygen. People love their local news and sports, even when not around.

I would not dicount the popularity of fantasy football in all of this. Most people I know involved in fantasy football leagues either have the NFL package at their house or go to a bar every Sunday that has it. But hardly anyone I know that are in fantasy baseball leagues have the MLB package or go and watch games at a bar. Do I really care about Rockies vs. Dodgers because I have Gagne? No. But Packers vs Lions and I have Favre, I'm there.

i agree with mikey about the watching aspect. i think the point is this. football is an event. people gather together to watch it, be at a bar or someones house. it is only once a week, and on a day when most people have off. baseball is a game that you can catch when it is convinient. somtimes there are day games, sometimes late nights. no matter where you are with an XM radio, you can catch a game. at work and a days game? listen to it on XM. at night and driving home, catch it on XM. it it a better radio bet than football.

but that says it all...people already have there access to the NFL games. I have the dish and if i didn't i would go to a bar to SEE the games. i would listen if it was my only choice, but its not. there are a ton of bars that have multiple TVs just for football season...hardly any do it for baseball, so its harder to find. not to mention my wife would kill me if i told her i'm going to the bar every night to watch baseball. but if i listened in my house she wouldn't care..at least not at the begining. thats what makes the MLB radio package more appealing than the NFL radio package in my opinion.

Here is why ON THE RADIO, baseball is better than football.

Baseball involves you for 162 games a year, plus preseason and post season. When all is said and done, you're making a seven month commitment to baseball, almost every day.

Football's commitment is a month less, but it's CONCENTRATED. One day a week, you see the game. How many times are you going to be focused on LISTENING rather than watching the game?

I know that I schedule myself to be in front of a TV to see the game. With baseball, it's a lot harder to schedule yourself around every single Yankee game.

The Nascar channel is the biggest waste of space 6 days a week. The only time it's worth something on XM is race day.

The same could be said for the NFL channels.

The MLB channels? Completely different.

Tenbatz, plus the sheer violence of football makes it a more visual game. Those crushing tackles dont translate as well. OK thats a total guess. Like many others here, listening to baseball = something one just does. I listen to the Yankees games just coz, for some reason, it passes the time better then talk or music or licking the window when babes pass by.
