View Full Version : Ways to Keep Warm

As the more chilling months of the year arrive I have to start thinking about ways I can keep warm. At work there are times where I will need to be on the dock for hours at a time and the dock is like a huge ice box when it gets cold.

I will need to be able to keep my lil fingies warm but will still need to use my finger tips so I will probably be buying the gloves with the tips cut off but without throwing on 20 layers I need to find the best possible way to be warm and to come back into the office when I need to and shed some clothes easily because the people in the office like it to be 80 degrees in there.

HELP!

They do have heaters hanging from the ceiling on some parts of the dock but not where I work on the dock and when youre standing underthem you barely feel anything, almost feels like a warm sunshine beating down on your face from above.

get a pair of those cool Freezie Freaks gloves. they keep your hands warm and when it gets real cold it puts a cool design on your glove. doesn't get much better then that.

I like the sweatshirts that have the long-john material inside, they're comfortable, and they keep you warm.

Carhart has some nice clothes for that as well, though you'll sweat like crazy in the office in those clothes.

Something like 80 percent of the heat in your body escapes through your head. So always have a hat on.

I love a good fleece, those things are remarkably good at keeping you warm.

hmmmmmm they need to make beanies for our company.

they gave me a fleece that is warm so thatll get me through these months but it wont be enough when it starts to get colder.

I will need to be able to keep my lil fingies warm but will still need to use my finger tips so I will probably be buying the gloves with the tips cut off
I don't know if you're constanly writing or how often you're using your fingers, etc., but the gloves with the tips cut off might still leave you a little chilly. They sell these oversized mittens (probably started out in the millitary) where it's like wearing the gloves with the tpis cut off, but with a mitten sewn on over for the times when you have time to cover up. I know that was a horrible explanation, but here's some pics:
http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL77/857148/1548180/70496002.jpg
http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL77/857148/1548180/70495998.jpg
http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL77/857148/1548180/70495994.jpg

And I would definitely get a space heater you can put on the floor. When I worked on a loading dock, keeping the feet warm was huge. That old saying/idea that if you keep the top of your head & the bottoms of your feet warm, your whole body will feel warm seemed to work for me.

My days of hair growing are long over.

And I googled it and 80% it a bit high. It's 40%, but I also found that 30% escape from you hands and feet, so combined they are 70%. Probably what I was thinking.

panty hose and wet suits supposed to help keep you warm... maybe they have gloves made from the same material as a wet suit that fit tightly on the hands so you can still grip things easily...

panty hose

The most uncomfortable things ever made.

I usually suck it up and wear tights under heavy pants with socks too. Then you put on a turtle neck with a sweater or something heavy over it. Put on a scarf and hat and your tipless gloves, and you will be set.

Oh yeah- and a nice heavy winter jacket with a hood.

I am always cold.

Fart in your pantyhose. I would think the heat from the fart would keep at least your legs warm. And think of the fringe benefits.

make sure the feetsies are warm too... the whole rest of your body could be toasty warm but if your feet are freezing then you're gonna be really uncomfortable...

other than layers of socks and insulated boots i'm not sure how to keep them warm for long periods of time...

The people out at Yosemite should be reading this thread. Wow that sounds stupid.

Meaning, they just peeled two frozen corpses off of El Capitan, the 'ne plus ultra' for Big Wall climbing. Mother nature showing again and again who is boss.

Link to Story (http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/10/21/yosemite.hikers/index.html)

Ad mauseum I brag of my younger bro, who has summitted El Cap, and he told me this is one mofo of a climb, a 3500 foot sheer wall, almost all near vertical, some past vertical in overhangs, and you sleep on 1-2 foot ledges while bolted into the mountain; 5 day climb. You have to shit in little PVC pipes and carry it down and out with you, mountains are famous for becoming garbage and faeces dumps.

He said it simply, the people who die are in the wrong place at the wrong time, with the wrong equipment, meaning, unprepared.

I think it's quite a lot, about 50% of total heat loss is through the head.

I try to tell Ron about this stuff, he wont even listen it freaks him out so much. Freaks me out too; why it fascinates.

El Capitan: Does this climb look fun to you? (http://supertopo.com/rockclimbing/route.html?r=ybelnose)

Get some merino wool sock and if you have to stand out on the dock in a certian area, try and see about either having them get you an anti-fatigue mat or see if someone can get some wood to stand on, because when I worked there, I found the cement floor sucks the heat right out of your feet and thats what really makes you cold and the wood or mat acts as a buffer. Youll be suprised!
