View Full Version : Ashlee Simpson walks off SNL
Doctor Manhattan

At CNN they have a clip of Ashlee Simpson walking off during her second song. The vocals started playing before she was ready to "sing", she did a weird dance, walked off, then her band started to jam a little before SNL went to commercial.
When are people going to stop supporting these no talents? Ashlee Simpson isn't even very hot. At least her sister looks good.

Even if that's true, no one is ever going to believe it.

A little inside info, she lost her voice during the dress rehearsal while singing her first song and they decided to dub her voice for the live show.
That simply cant be true.
It takes a lot of planning to have the vocals (and only the vocals) on a track. There's just no way to decide, at the last minute, to use a sequence with vocals on it.
Here's what happened:
The 2nd song she was going to do was the same tempo as the song she played earlier.
The drummer started the sequence and played the beat from the 2nd song.
Everything was fine at that point.
When the pre-recorded vocals come in, she realizes that the drummer cued up the wrong sequence and she looks at him. The drummer then turns to his right and looks at the Sequencer (or laptop or MD player or whatever...) but at that point it was too late.
The guitarist started playing the 1st song (in time with the sequence and the guide vocal) but Ashlee was embarrassed and didn't commit.
At that point...what the hell? Time for a gay little leprechaun dancing...right? Wrong.
Walking off was a mistake. She SHOULD have charged through the song like she had something to prove...which, by the way, she does.

This is the second time Ashlee Simpson has had a horrific live performance. She actually performed live before the MTV VMA awards and she was very, very bad.

The only reason why that big nose jizzbag is even famous is because of her sister. I am not surprised by this story. Top 40 is nothing but pre proccessed cookie cutter crap.
That cunt should have blamed it on the guy who fucked up the cue for the tape, not her band.

Mikey I woke up to an email saying Did You See SNL?! and it was literally the first SNL I have TiVo'ed in two years. Long story short, fezident has it exactly right, the thing about losing her voice nd dubbing like someone else, thats not why it happened at all, it happened because
-someone fucked up, and more importantly
-a 'band' and its 'vocalist' chose to lip-synch to a backing sequence.
another hammer in the coffin for that one; cant Anyone play a fucking song live without a click track? Its concert by Apple G5 now.

say what you will about snl being funny, it isnt, but the one thing they kinda have always had was decnt musical performers and performences, very ecletic over the years, but lately the have just become flavor of the moment, hopefully last nights flub was some behind the scenes techs way of protest,

Ding! Ding!
So many that they put out a boz set of them, yes?
Thats exactly it. As someone else mentioned, SNL is, or Was, a place where a music act could really step up to the plate and deliver live.
Now, there have been bands going back 20 years on SNL who werent playing 100% live, a click or a keyboard sequence in the drummer's headphones, hell Rush has been doing that for years. And many others; I was surprised at how much of Peter Gabriel's last live show was literally coming from G5's. It bummed me out.
BUT, these bands can deliver when things go tits up. I go to play at so many Open Mics, and have hosted as many, and its amazing to see the range of reactions in band members when things fall apart during a song. Ive seen the smallest Nothing of an act have an absolute Diva Hissy Fit coz their rig went out, and with flop sweat like that, you never recover.
And Ive seen real, live bands that have had things go to shit, and they laugh it off, or better yet, recover so superbly that they get a big ovation. Vernon Reid; Living Colour, sold out Beacon: String breaks, guitar is on a Floyd Rose so its now useless, the entire band stops dead. Utter silence, in the hall. Vernon grabs another guitar without saying a word in about two seconds and BOOM! the place is on its feet.
Ms. Simpson could have asked the click stopped, the Mic brought up and the song played and sung live. Or Could she? Meaning, can those people onstage even perform the song 100% live.
Christ thats where my ramble is going. Thats the rule; feel free to add some additional shit, most of our favorite bands do. But, Be Able to Do it Live. Youd think the back-up 'worst case scenario' of a band would be:
Ok, well, I guess we actually have to play these music isntruments, and you? You gotta go yell into that Mic. Yes, actual singing. OK... 1,2,3,4...

Exactly...her band managed to salvage the number nicely, why not just start singing. I'm not sure if they playing the right song, but even then she could have begun singing & SNL would have been smart enough to fade out. Then they could have corrected the problem in the commercial & come back to her performing the right song.
And I love the smirk on the face of the guitarist with the pink and white guitar.
That was the most entertaining part of the whole clip.

To be fair...SNL hasn't changed all that much. Many of the artists that are fullblown legends NOW, were merely one (or two) hit wonders when they appeared on SNL more than 20 years ago.
SNL has always had flavor-of-the-week artists on their show but we, as a generation, get older and more judgemental.
To put it another way : The Jackson 5 didn't write their own music or really play their own instruments but they are "legendary" while Nsync is "gay" and "a joke". The scene didn't change....WE DID.
I agree with Mike the Teacher. A huge percentage of todays artists are letting Protools do all the heavy lifting but then again, just last week, Queen Latifah performed 100% live with a big band and nobody cared. Maybe the hi-tech automated live shows are the new standard and there's nothing us purists can do aboot it.

Ashlee Simpson is the Milli Vanilli of the 21st century
I knew someone was going to bring this up.
EVERYBODY lipsynchs, especially in Top 40. Every single Super Bowl half-time show is lipsynched. Do you honestly think you can dance and sing at the same time? Not happening.
THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO MILLI VANILLI. Learn your history. Milli Vanilli was a fraud because they were two good looking guys fronting for the real singers.
Ashlee Simpson was lipsynching her own music, her own voice.
BIG DIFFERENCE.

The music sucks now and then as fezident pointed out. I can't believe people would defend this twat even if it wasn't her fault. Those songs, even if it isn't her voice, are her fault and that's enough for me to hate her. As for the musicians being ready to pull it out, f them too. Justice is served. They sold their soul for a quick buck, I hope they enjoy their new fame. The state of radio, and popular music is at it's worst point in history. SNL also featured Aretha, MaCartney, Simon & Garfunkel, Duran Duran, The Dead, Nirvana, Alanis, Metallica, DMB, Sting, Tina Turner, Madonna, Snoop, Talking Heads, etc etc etc. So I think there have been many many great performances.
In fact.... the Blind Melon "No Rain" clip is considered by many NBC employees (my Dad mixes Post Audio in Studio 8-G) to be the best musical performance SNL ever had. It's the only time the crowd was clapping loudly while the band was still in mid-song.

A list of crappy musical guests on SNL... (one hit wonders or have seen to be crap in retrospect)
(starting backwards)
Kelis
Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder
Zwan
Good Charlotte
Ms Dynamite
Andrew WK (debatable, I like him)
India.Arie
Nelly Furtado
Ricky Martin
Radiohead
Just Kidding
Sisqo
Everlast
Eagle Eye Cherry
I'm stopping there, but that's just from the last four years, so what Mojo said is revelevant.
BUT.
Let's start from 1980.
There are just as many one-hit wonders and bands that aren't even popular on SNL starting then too. Dexy's Midnight Runners. Greg Kihn. The Power Station. Frankie goes to Hollywood. Big Country. Loverboy. Stray Cats. Eddy Grant.

After reading Fezident's post, I agree, but I think there's a difference between "great bands" playing SNL and "great performances".
Blind Melon is not a great band. They are effectively a one-hit wonder, dead lead singer or not.
I'm a Springsteen fan, and he's done some so-so performances on SNL. However, he's knocked the ball out of the park on other venues. So who knows.

You were saying?
I said "SNL HAS HAD SOME GREAT MUSICAL ACTS ON OVER THE YEARS." Do I need to type it again? The bad acts don't somehow negate the kickass ones. I loved SNL being on Comedy Central 18 times a day just because of the music performances they'd show from the 80's and 90's. Overall, until the last 5-6 years, SNL has overall been WAY more consistent with their musical quality over the quality of their "comedy."

I simply cant believe that anyone could argue with the sheer star-power on that list! And that list is just a tiny cross section! Weird.
I know it's very easy to post "sucks" after every name, that's your opinion. That's totally cool. But the "late, too late and decades too late" thing makes no sense. A lot of those bands were at the height of success.
My point was/is; SNL balances every episode that features The Spice Girls or Shakira with one that features Tom Petty, Billy Joel, or Queen.

The show has had some good calls, but few and far between. Compare it to the small time, up and coming bands of Conan. I know he has a daily show, but at least he truly spreads it out. As far as the old dogs, they simply were. If not, they brought in bands like Petty only if they were being pushed huge by the label or had a big selling album. And come on, was that the true Metallica on SNL? Fuck no. We haven't seen them since the album with the names' sake of the poker tournament host "Justice for All". I know, terrible play on the album name/board member name. But that's just like me, I go crazy when my girl makes soup and calls it dinner!

I mean, they had Fishbone on in the 80's
And I was working at a radio station in NJ, and the PD gets a phone call, and next thing I'm watching Jeremy Irons in a leather jacket introducing Fishbone, who had nothing for a hit, except right then "Sunless Saturday" was being pushed like hell, Spike Lee directed the video and all that.
And it sure as fuck was live, coz the horns in "Everyday Sunshine" sounding alarmingly out of tune, and I guess it comes through a little more on sterile TV then at a club with 1000 people, 999 in a mosh, with Angelo doing more stage diving then the crowd.
God damn live they were a Monster of a band.
=
Elvis Costello famously stopped whatever song they were into and said something like 'Theres NO Reason why we cant play this song! before going into Radio Radio, which got him nicely banned I think. Sheeesh youd think he showed a nipple.
I remember seeing DEVO on TV for the first time on SNL, and being scared. I remember Mick Jagger walking, backwards, up to the Mic to surprise a music guest I cant remember, and I remember wacthing the Stones blow it famously on their Way Too Hyped appearence.

Wrong again. Milli Vanilli's manager (and the creator of the whole sham in the first place) got pissed off at Rob and Fab's egos getting out of control, and revealed the whole thing himself.
Again, not the same thing.

What song did she sing before she did it? I remember it was some sort of lullabye - very haunting - but that's a SHOCKING moment.
Does anyone remember what songs were done at the superbowl before Janet's wardrobe malfunctioned?

I have the very first SNL with Carlin, the whole damn thing. Not one but Two, musical guests, Billy Preston and Janis Ian. Billy's performance is so fucking kick ass, he nailed 'Nothing from Nothing...' and that band, is playing 100% of every damn note, and they Killed. And Carlin did not one, but three... um tri-olouges?
Janis was great, but how reved up can you get hearing 'At Seventeen'? Its like 'Send in the Clowns'
Fucking A spoon I'm old too, but I love it, coz I can remember watching what kicked Ass all over SNL, and that was Don Kirchner's Rock Concert and holy living fuck did that rule for a time where there was no outlet for music on tv. Youd see Kiss, Bowie, Captain and Tenille, and the comedy Styling of Fred Travelena or Gary Mule Deer. Between that and SCTV? That was TV heaven for this then teen.

He played the wrong track 'pieces of me' and she started to sing 'autobiography'. The band pretended to be jamming. It was the drummers fault for playing the wrong song but the only she lip sang was because she lost it during dress. She was singing live before that happened. She shouldn't have blamed the band though.

She did not sing live at the camera blocking rehearsal on Thursday afternoon. Sounds like you have a connection at NBC. If so...go to "edit 8" and ask to watch the Thursday footage.
But all that stuff aside.... no matter what happened with the backing tracks, you never and I mean NEVER walk off set. It's unheard of.

All things considered, it boils down to one thing. The show is called Saturday Night Live.
The beauty of a live show is that anything can happen, and obviously it did.
In this particular case, the "live" part backlashed on the artist, thus causing an event to be talked about.
It doesn't happen often, and for the artist, when it goes wrong it's usually a disaster. But it's a disaster that gets sort of forgotten over time. Meaning that while pop culturists may mark it for ridicule to be later recalled on some VH1 "I remember the 2000's" special, the artist actually doesn't sustain any long term damage.
The problem is that she's sort of a B list artist in the first place. Without her sister, she'd be working in the Stop-N-Shop and known as a girl who sings in the break room really well along with the radio.
The end result will be that it was all the producer and directors fault and she'll continue on with her coattail career without a hitch.
And even if her career tanks, she's still going to make more money than any of us posting here, or at least marry someone that does, and never have to work a real job like the rest of us mooks.

Ashlee Simpson is the Milli Vanilli of the 21st century
Well, it's her music, so I don't neccessarily have a problem with that. I don't really know Ashlee Simpson, but Britney Spears does backflips and crap during her live performances, so at least she has some excuse. You can fool people in concert when it's so fuckin loud to start with, but on TV in front of only 200 people it gets a lot harder. It really shouldn't be a big deal, though because everyone else in her category of music does it and it's her singing in the first place.

Very true, though Etheridge moreso than Aguilera. Maybe if she sat down and wrote some of her own music that wasn't reaching out to fragile 16 year olds, she would be better. However, they are both true singers with real talent.
And here's the video for anyone who missed it (http://media.ebaumsworld.com/ashlee-snl.wmv) Kudos to the band for carrying themselves with professionalism and playing through.

Damn it. It seems everytime I miss SNL i miss something big. Of course I'd probably have turned it off because I haven't watched the musical performances probably since 1997 or so (missed Jim Carrey jumping up on stage that time last year). This might actually make me weigh the pros and cons of watching some really stupid musical performance because SNL seems to be getting more spontaneous (or at least its staged so).
And I have no problem with Sinead O' Connor ripping up a picture of the pope because she seems to have been somebody that actually had some type of message behind the "protest" (I didn't see it live and don't know when it happened because I couldn't have been more than 8). I consider myself religious and don't feel that the pope somehow is an untouchable figure because some uber priests have dubbed him so. Don't mean to get all preachy, but it wierds me out that she got so much flak.

The beauty of a live show is that anything can happen, and obviously it did.
If it were live then why was there a tape playing? and it sounded way too loud to be a "backup vocal" at least for the first few words.
The drummer then turns to his right and looks at the Sequencer (or laptop or MD player or whatever...)
And why is it the drummer's job to play the tape? I'm sure there are other people who could/should be doing that.
Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.
Why are the vocal tracks there? Just admit that Ashlee and basically every other Pop star can't sing like they do on the records. Their voice are processed.

Madonna and Janet Jackson do alot of 'live performance' dancing... it seems like they're singing as well according to the filmage of their concerts that i've seen on cable...
I get two magazines which kick ass, Electronic musician and more specifically Keyboard. Each month they feature an a major touring artist and they interview either the keyboard guy or whoever is running the show in terms of sequencing and vocals and everything peeps are debating. Sometimes its the same guy doing both.
Anyway, for Janet and Madonna and Britney it goes like this for just about all of them: you have a band onstage with real instruments, and you having a sequence running during the song, the G5s or whatever is top-o-the-line in Aplle territory is the standard, and the software can be ProTools or a custom program or whatever.
Whats on the sequence? Can be anything as simple as a click for the drummer to play to. Because shows like this feature so much lighting and staging shit, theres almost no way to synch it all the old way, with humans. Theres the trade off, real live bands can play a song fast one night, slow the next; these bands are locked in to whatever the click is.
Or not, coz the click can be based on the drummer, so it gets very complex. And the sequence can have anything from just a click to whatever they want to put in there; lead or backup vocals, horns, sfx, the little samples they throw in on records, all of it exactly on cue. And the programmer can take out or put in stuff on the fly, accoriding to whatever the performer wants that night. It can all fall apart spectaculalrly; they usually have two completely redundant units, each running, and software that compares the two to see if system A is good and if it goes tits up system B can kick in such that no one notices a damn thing.
Now Vocals: They can put what they sang in the studio in, or a slightly different version, and they can decide howmuch/little of it gets used. Then theres software that can do real-time pitch correction; the Antares Auto-Tune is like the Satan of Effects; it can take a vocal line, compare it to the melody it's *suposed* to be, and if a note is off by a certain amount, it kicks in, and shifts the performer's [not the tapes] vocal to the right note. It can be done so the delay is small enough as to be unoticable but almost all, but it can be used to effect; you can 'freeze' the vocal pitch for that note; Cher did in on that song is it 'Believe' [?], and Kid Rock uses it on 'Only God Knows Why'. Christ that seems way back.
Anyway thats all just the frigging beginning. Some acts have guys with guitars and keyboardists under the frigging stage playing, and you just dont see em. Weird what happens with all of this technology, and something seemingly as simple as playing a song. Well, not all of us have 12 piece bands, 20 piece crews, and a stage that takes 3 semis to hold.

[ >
I've played Bass for quite a few successful Pop & Adult Contemporary acts and it's ALWAYS the drummer who cues up the track. The drummer needs a 4-count BEFORE he counts in the rest of the band with his own 4-count (clicking his sticks or hitting the hat or verbally counting to four or whatever....)
If the drummer misses any one of those "private" four clicks then he will be unable to correctly count in the rest of the band. His "one" will be off.
It's more reliable for the drummer to hit his own starts so that he is ready for the count.

That's a good point fezident, but it would be nice if Bands just played music.
Tapes should be used for the band to review the music they played live, or to record an album.
Whatever happened to bands that could actually play their music?
Look...you grow up in a household where all attention is lavished upon your older sister, who is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful women in the world who by some miracle of g-d is also blessed with an amazing voice...

I wouldn't try to make a name for myself in the exact same field as my more successful sibling. We've seen lots of example where that fails.
The only example where it wasn't the less successful siblings falt I can think of is Eric Roberts, who was acting before his sister became huge.
I'm sure it's hard to have a family member become really famous, but if you don't have the talent, why go into the same field?
George W Bush is a good example. Why, W? Why? Why would you want this job? In Fact why does Kerry want to inheit this mess?

Sort of.
I mean, she turned out to be right, and then some. She just beat the rest of us to it by about a decade. And considering the cover-up of some of these horrible molestation cases DOES go as high as the Vatican, that's a pretty justifiable form of protest over that issue. Also knowing that even in smaller countries like Ireland, the rate of just DISCOVERED church-related molestation cases puts all of America to shame, percentage-wise, this has been a long-unspoken problem that she was up on about way before the rest of us.
You get right down to it, she was right. Not necessarily in her specific form of protest, but WHY she did it? Fuckin'-A, man. All the way. That's WAY ahead of the game.

i really hate her. she is such a wanna-be. this is not shocking to anyoen who has watched her show. there have been numerous times on it where she has stopped recordign because she was sounding shitty. she does not have a good voice.
i am sure it sucks that her sister is hot and famous. and i am sure she wants some attention from her parents. but find something else that you are good at to do.

Simpson has since been widely attacked for the snafu, with an interview she gave to Lucky magazine coming back to haunt her. When asked what her take on lip-synching was, she had told the magazine, "I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going to let my real talent show, not just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me." (http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1492993/20041025/simpson_ashlee.jhtml?headlines=true)

That's an incredibly suffocating shadow to live in....who's to say what anyone of us would do in her shoes? I've personally never been jealous of my brother cause he's kind of a fuckup, but if he looked like Nick and banged the hottest piece of ass in the country I think I could safely say I'd do my best to distinguish myself from him and avoid the label as "his older, uglier brother"....But Nick's brother was in that boy band with him. The difference is Nick married Jessica and they made a tv show out of it.
Recently, there was a comercial on cable with Nick helping his brother pack clothing to promote the brother doing Rent on Broadway.

When I heard about this, the first thing that went through my head was the commercial for her show on MTV. Before it ever aired the first episode (I think) they had a commercial that showed her STRUGGLING through a song in the studio & eventually just giving up on it & throwing a hissy fit. Does anyone know if that song was on of the ones she intended to lip-synch on SNL? To me, that would only further the notion that she knows all too well that she doesn't have the vocal range to pull the song off in a live scenario.

If you look at Sinead's explanation and don't read anything beyond that, then yeah. We'll probably all agree that the form of protest was a mistake, but she should have had the forsight to see that it was a mistake, and I think she did. The backlash she caused completely smothered any cause which she may have stood for at the time. Moreover, VH-1 did a countdown show recently which featured that event and she explained that the Church at the time was the enemy. One would think that in light of recent events, a network as anti-traditional as VH-1 would be quick to point out the reason for her "protest." This is the first time I've heard that child abuse was the motive behind tearing up a picture of the Pope, so I would lean towards that explanation as a thrown-together method of damage control. Bottom line, it was about Sinead getting press for Sinead.
Recently, there was a comercial on cable with Nick helping his brother pack clothing to promote the brother doing Rent on Broadway.

And?
I'm assuming that's the clip from the "100 Most Shocking Moments in Rock 'n' Roll" show, which is a couple years old, which used an interview clip of her that was even a few years older than that. Her issue at the time of the SNL incident doesn't have anything to do with the current scandal in the US involving the Catholic church and molestation...it had to do with it in Ireland, and as it's turned out to be here, how nobody did anything about it or even paid attention to it. Considering how she her herself was abused as a child, I can see how that would hit home, and how scummy it would seem that the Catholic church seemed unwilling to do anything about their own priests touching kids. It was shitty then, and it's even shittier today.

Most of today's top recording artists SUCK. Few play their own instruments or write their own songs.
It's all about packaging. If you're a woman, you just have to be "a piece of ass" amd you're a recording artist.
If you could really sing, why the hell would you ever consider lip synching--unless you can't sing in the first place.
And "F" this needing a little help in live performances excuse. Sing live damn it!!! It's your F'ing job. It's making you millions.
And enough with the f'ing dancing too.
The fans are too blame for buying the records/CDs of this very marginally talented recording artists.
How the hell the Beatles sell all those records? THEY HAD TALENT!!!! They wrote their own songs, played their own instruments, and they didn't feel like they have to f'ing dance for us.

This episode of SNL was on again tonight, and I just have to say, if she hadn't blamed it on her band at the end, I don't think it would have been such a big deal. If she had come out and said,"I'm sorry, my throat is a little bad today, and I didn't want to dissapoint you guys", I think she still might have a slight amount of my respect. But, dogging her band, just pissed me off, as a musician and a music of all kinds fan.

Wait! You're kidding right? U2 actually wrote that CRAP they are passing off as a new album?
How incredibly sad it is that the once mighty have fallen like the way they have. After having the misfortune of hearing How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb I couldn't believe this was the same band who recorded The Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire. Even that tripe on All That You Can't Leave Behind was at least listewnable compared to this "Vertigo - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" garbage.

Scissor Sisters were great last night.

From what I saw, he seemed very rushed. It also seemed like he said alot of things twice.
By the way, what was up with them reusing the lower back tattoo removal cream commercial. Kind of sloppy on their part, especially leading the show off with it.

I missed the show, but they often re-use the pre-taped commercials bits. If they lead the show off with it, my guess is that there were some problems and they weren't quite ready to go live at 11:30.

Mikeyboy is correct.
The pre-produced bits are often used if, logistically, the cast/crew is not ready-to-go with the upcoming sketch on "the wall" (aka the schedule). Makeup, wardrobe, sets, audio, etc each have a department cheif that has to signal the Director with a green light. If any one of the departments doesn't "green in"...they cut to a pre-produced segment that fits in the alotted time.

Nope, they had that in the schedule since Wednesday and played it during the dress rehearsal and ran it as scheduled during on-air...

True,
But it could've been scheduled because so many cast members were written into the opening monologue that there wasnt time to get them to a live sketch. The preproduced segment buys that time.

Ashlee's horrible performance at the Orange Bowl finished with her being soundly booed by the spectators at the game. See here... (http://www.local10.com/entertainment/4048912/detail.html)
There's also video on the page of the incident. The camera closed in on her face just as the booing erupted. I love it!!
