I guess this is the first time I'm feeling the pressures of growing up. I went to Borders and picked up a book about colleges. I looked through and realized I need to shape up and really start thinking about the future. I guess it just hit like a bag of bricks and it's very unsettling knowing that in a year I'm going to have to go and sign up for college and start thinking about a career. It just sucks I guess.

hahha, keith when i read your post i remember the day it hit me. you get like that sick feeling in your stomach and you are like oh man... this is way sooner than i thought!

what year are you in highschool? it hit me sophmore year, when i took PSAT's. some kids it hits junior year.

either way, get your shit together. you need to do well in all your classes and leave highschool with a decent GPA. also join some clubs and get involved. no college wants a lazy ass.

also try and take at least one AP class and a few honors classes (if you are academicaly able to).

in a year I'm going to have to go and sign up for college and start thinking about a career.

All it takes is a dollar and a dream. You got to be in it to win it----the NJ Lotto. But then again you have better chances being hit by lightning......not that it's a bad thing, but it would be shocking.

The good thing about college is that you don't have to declare a major until your 2nd-3rd year (at least when I went to school).

Growing up is cool.......you could:
start going to strip joints........but that cost money
gamble at the casinos...........dang that cost money too
go on trips and stuff.........damn that cost money again
taking your girl out and......freaking A more god damn money!!!

Fuck you're right growing up sucks and you need money to do shit. Life sucks.

thinking about a career.

dude no sweat no worries I got friends, everyone on this board has friends who are 40, and are thinking Exactly the same thing. People who are that old, and think that their lives are gonna start soon, or the Big Break is gonna come, or things will Really be different, This Time I'll really Make it, and theyre utterly bullshitting themselves.

Meaning; they arent happy Here, and Now, and if one isn't, well... thats another rant.

no problemo, jose jimenez

Shit happens. It sucks. The shitty part is that this all hiy me like in October of my senior year, oh about 3 weeks before aplications were due. I applied to three schools, and I was lucky enough to get into 1 and a half (Clemson and some sattelite campuses of Pitt).

The way you can deal with it is to start doing shit early, take the SAT early and often if you need to. Make a list of schools as early as possible and find out when application deadlines are, I waited too long and missed a couple deadlines. The earlier you get these out, the fewer people you have to go up against.

But dont let all this freak you out. If you really want to go to college, you will. Maybe not to your first choice, but there is a college out there that will accept you.

Keithy, you probably don't have anything to worry about. You seem to be a smart kid (misguided maybe, but smart) so you probably will be able to get into most of the schools you want to get into. I was going through this shit two years ago and it does suck because its like being confronted by your future and actually having to become an adult {shiver}.

Ultimately the only things you need to decide right now about your career is whether you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, or other. Choosing a major doesn't come until late sophmore year, so, if you want to be a doctor or lawyer, your path is pretty set and if you fall into other you still have a good three years.

The college process (as any good guidance counselor should make clear to you) is all about choosing schools you really want to go to, but also choosing schools that you know you can get into and safety schools that are last resorts. And even then, as in my case, the last resort doesn't have to be all that bad because mine were Hunter, Brooklyn, and Queens Colleges and SUNY Cortland, Buffalo, and Oswego. You're lucky because you are in a college rich area and you wouldn't have to just choose community colleges as safety schools.

Extra-curriculars are huge too. Its not VERY important to have them if you're smart, but you'd be surprised how they are literally the difference between the Ivy Leagues and just a more mid-level school.

Growing up does suck, no question. But in 10-15 years from now when you are all grown up all of this crap you deal with now will have been worth it. When you are sitting on you property, with a pretty wift,a kid or two, a dog, a nice job and money in your pocket then you can look back and say it was all worth it.

Have a goal and get to it, don't be like others on the board with their shttered dreams. Get to it.

Yeah, I remember that freaked out feeling, realizing that college and the real world waited. The truth is, in the big scheme of things, college is so much better than high school, and the real world is so much better than college (imo).

If you don't get completely distracted by booze and shit, college is actually a lot easier to deal with than high school.

And the real world - even though there are plenty of sucky things there - really is freedom and is nothing to be afraid of.

The process of growing up does suck, but if you go through it with the understanding that you are not the only person going through it, and you are not the first person who has ever done it, then you just look at each problem or challenge as something new to experience.

And when all else fails...watch "Degrassi." Those kids always seem to figure it out.

Painfully true.

Though the little things make it cool.

I'm young enough, and still have enough friends going to school, to realize that not having homework is really, REALLY awesome.

From my experience from both sides of desks; you could not be more right.

It's... Scrumtrulescent

Thats exactly it; there's more pressure in more ways on a kid in high schlool; now its a different pressure entirely from some Husband/Wife Father/Mother pressure that 'adults' have, but the fact remains is that later part of your life aint your life yet, so all you have is your experience, and in the experience of most: high school blows donkey.

College is SOOOO much easier, thats why it's so hard. In high school, the bell rings, you walk down the hall, make a left, theres your next class. Easy. In college yu may have a 10am class, and then youre off until your 2:30 or your 6:00pm class, which gives you plenty of time to invent anything and everything to keep you from going.

Job? Depends. Theres too many variables in the aboove two to worry about that. If ya wanna go the college route, just survive that. Make it to there. No worries. I'm still pondering what i wanna do when I grow up.

Dont sweat it Keithy, before you know it you'll be shitting in a bag attached to your hip and telling kids in the nieghborhood to get off your lawn.

Life is short, dont harp on things, everything seems to always work out. Just dont put things off and you wont have to worry.

Thanks guys. I know I shouldn't let it bother me. I guess it could be because I really want to go to Ramapo college and it's really hard to get into. You need a 1160 on your SAT's and you need to have a 3.0 GPA. The average with the people on the campus was 3.4. I guess it just brought my dreams back to reality and I realized I ened to start working hard.

I'm so confused by some of the responses in this thread. High school kicked ass, 4 years of sex drugs alcohol and rock and roll. Then college came along and it turned into another 4 years of the same stuff, an amazing 8 years of my life that I'll consider maybe the greatest 8 years I'll ever have. I'm not taking to keen to this real world thing. How is it that people found it exactly the opposite?! I mean, if you consider the biggest hardship of your life taking the SATs and getting into Ramapo, then I think it's safe to say your life is pretty damn easy. I'm not knocking the SATs or Ramapo or Keithy's life, I'm just saying in my opinion those are minimal pressures compared to real world pressures, deadlines, etc. Either way, best of luck Keithy hope it all works out for ya.

did you take your PSAT's or SAT's already Keithy? You have a Writing section on the SAT's now, don't you?
I was lucky because I am horrible with my grammar and didn't have to take a writing section on my SATS's. With that said I still read at the speed of Rain Man and still got a 1270 on my SAT's at worst. You seem to be a good writer so the writing section should fix anything that you possibly could do in the Math and Reading at your worst.

I didn't take either of those tests yet. I will take the SATs this year. I'm probably going to do better on the writing section. The math section, well I don't know. I'm a good test taker so maybe it will work out.

it never does get any easier, does it? even though the last couple of years in law school have been tough and a lot of hard work, facing the reality of graduating in a number of months that i can count on my fingers has not been easy. but i guess it's just another stage, and we get past them all.

i remember applying for college, and it can definitely be stressful. i was fortunate to have pretty good grades and a very good SAT score, but it was still a very scary experience. just apply to more schools than just BYU, and you'll be fine.
