View Full Version : Return of the Jedi -- Ponder This
INFOSTUD

Ponder this: when Luke draws his light saber to strike the Emperor. Vader blocks the strike.
Who is Vader trying to save? The Emperor or Luke?
I think it's really Luke. Had he killed the Emperor, Luke would have been in the grip of the Dark Side. Vader surely wanted the Emperor out of the picture but not at the expense of Luke.
Worst part of Return of the Jedi on DVD? The holograms of Yoda, Obi-wan and Anakin at the end. Now it's the new, young Anakin that appears.
That's just chronologically wrong. Anakin becomes a full Jedi Knight again at the time of his death. They should have left it as the older Anakin.
F'ing Lucas.

I agree with the decision to replace Anakin's ghost being retarded.
But as far as Vader saving Luke, I think you may be reading a little too far into it. I think it's purely Vader displaying his loyalty to the dark side. He's defending his boss. Simple as that.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering??
http://duryea.org/pinky/brilliant.jpg
RETURN OF THE JEDI is riddled with problems, and the inclusion of the nu-Anakin at the end really is horrible - worse than the whole Ewoks story, however not as bad as the brilliantly stupid idea of killing Boba Fett in such a punk-ass, lame way.
According to spin-meister Lucas, "Anakin" died when he became Darth Vader, which is why we should see him as a young man, while Yoda and Obi Wan were old - which kind of sucks, if you ask me. WHy should the guy who became bad get to look all hunky in the after life, while those that stayed true to the force get shackled with looking like old prunes??
PAH!
Bullshit! They should have left that alone!
Interestingly enough, the best changes Lucas did to his films are also in JEDI; the whole song, montage at the end is so much better than what was in the original version, imo.
as far as who Vader was trying to save - I don't really know, and don't really care. I had always assumed that he was attempting to protect the emperor, but since Lucas has been going in overdrive to humanize his Hitler all these years later, maybe he is trying to protect his son.

DO IT, HESH!!!
"Cruisin' Mos Espa in my Delorian,
War's over I'm a peacetime Mandalorian.

Deep in debate buffet plate at Bennigans.

First and second defense I won't hesitate.
Got a job to do Darth's the guy that delegates.
Got something against Skywalker someone he really hates.
I don't give a fuck. I'm after Solo
For all I care he could be hiding at Yoda's dojo.
Gotta make the money, credit's no good
When the Jawas run the shop in your neighborhood.
Think you can cook? I got a grappling hook.
Let's make this quick coz I'm really booked.
I'm a devious degenerate, defender of the devil,
Shut down all the trash compactors on the detention level.
My backpack's got jets. I'm Boba the Fett.
I bounty hunt for Jabba Hutt to finance my 'Vette.
I chill in deep space, a mask is over my face.
I deliver the prize but I still narrow my eyes
Coz my time I don't like to waste. Get down.
I'm a question wrapped inside an enigma,
Get inside the Slave One, find your homing signal,
From Endor to Hoth, Ripley to Spock,
I'll find what you want, but there's gonna be a cost.
Say my name is Boba Fett. I know my shit is tight.
Start not acting right, you're frozen in carbonite.
Got telescopic sight, flame throwers on my wrist.
You still don't get the jist? Spiked boots are made to kick,

Give you a head start, coz I'm the sporting kind.
Consider the starting line the sneaky smile I hide inside.
Hope you have hyper drive, pray to stay alive.
Don't try to slip me a five coz I never take a bribe,
To the beat of a different drummer, bad ass bounty hunter,
Let no man put asunder or else they be put under,
As in six feet. Got an imperial fleet
Backing me up. Gonna blow up any attempt to defeat.
They got the Death Star, got four payments on my car,
Hand it over to Hammer head at Mos Eisley bar.

Slice you open like a tauntaun, faster than the Autobahn,
Or a motorbike in Tron, do the deed and then I'm gone.
Jaba has a hissyfit, contact Calrissian,
Over a Colt, the plan unfolds, no politic is legit.
Back in the day when I was a slave
Living life in the fast lane like in a pod race,
My mean streak tweaked I became a basket case
So this space ace split that place poste haste.
Took up a noble cause called the Clone Wars
Coz life's not all about girls and cars,
Getting fucked up in fucked up bars,
See I'm not a retard or gay like DeBarge.
I'm large and in charge with a face so scarred,
A cold black heart that's been torn apart.
The Sith wish that they had a dick so hard
Coz it's long, long ago in a pussy far, far.

Killing Boba was another illustration of Lucas not getting what his fans were into. Personally, I never really got the whole Boba Fett deal either, but he was amazingly popular, and his brief appearance in EMPIRE gave fans in the early 1980s hope that there was going to be something great with this character in the next movie.
Nope - he is accidently whacked, and tumbles into a giant dersert vagina.
The fans were denied that, but were instead treated to Ewoks; this formula was repeated in THE PHANTOM MENACE, where the viewers are teased with a potentially cool villan, only to have him get wasted without seeing anything more - meanwhile, the thing Lucas loved most was that damn Jar Jar Binks.
Other examples of Lucas not getting what the fans wanted/liked - him changing the whole "Han Shooting First" in STAR WARS or him not really liking that Harrison Ford changed the line from "I love you too" to "I know" in EMPIRE, and was only convinced after everyone told him how brilliant it was after the film came out.

To be fair, George was really just killing off an extra, maybe a featured extra, but just that. Boba wasn't meant to become as famous as he was/is.
Now why isn't Admiral Akbar more famous? he had lots more screen time/lines than Boba Fett.
Other examples of Lucas not getting what the fans wanted/liked...him not really liking that Harrison Ford changed the line from "I love you too" to "I know" in EMPIRE, and was only convinced after everyone told him how brilliant it was after the film came out.
And it was Lucas' own film school professor that was directing the actors and knew "I love you too" wasn't something Han would say.
He would then go on to direct the worst Sean Connery James Bond movie, ever: "Never Say Never Again". The worst Connery James Bond movie ever is "Operation Double 007" with Neil Connery playing James Bond's Brother "Dr Neil Connery" who had to fill in for his brother. What a bad movie, they also managed to get some people who actually stared in Bond movies, like Ms. Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell), M (Bernard Lee), and Emilio Largo (from Thunderball played by Adolfo Celi)
What were we talking about again?

And how did anyone know anything about such dorkly desires back in 1980-1983? And Boba Fett was really THAT popular back then? I remember liking the toy, but that was about it. I also liked the toy called "Yak Face." Big deal.
There was no internet back then. How did nerds communicate their burning lust for all things Fett? Seems like that would have required a level of social interraction that would have killed them.

I'm no Star Wars geek. I hate the newer movies, and I don't think the original trilogy have aged as well as others think they have. However, I was a kid when the orignal movies came out and I did get caught up in all of the Star Wars hype.
My hypothesis as to why Boba Fett got so big was because of the action figures. Leading up to Empire, the toy company was running lots of ads for the figures. They were also running a promotion where if you bought 4 or 5 of the figures from ep. 4, you could mail in the proof or purchase seals for a figure of the previously unseen Boba Fett. These commercials were on all the time. I remember that the commercials built up anticipaton for the character in Empire and Jedi for my friends and me. When he died so quickly and anti-climactically in Jedi, I remember being shocked.
If that's the case, then Boba Fett was probably always considered a minor character and was thrown out there as the freebie mail in promotion because it wouldn't be considered to be a big seller otherwise.

To tell the truth, I remembered being baffled about even the little attention Boba Fett got in the movie when I first saw it when I was 5. I had completely forgotten about him in "Empire," and couldn't figure out why this nobody was ranking what little "extra" attention he got. I mean, yeah, he LOOKED cool...but that was about it. In the end, to tag on to what Mikey said, he was just a walking toy ad. He did nothing...meant nothing to the movies...but because they designed him well visually, they were able to make millions off of him. Kinda sick, actually.
Well, all that, AND the crazy, psycho-sexual imagery in Jabba's part of the flick left me feeling funny and confused.

A couple of years ago I found my Darth Vader action figure carrying case. It basically was a huge, life-sized replica of Vader's head and shoulders. What I did was, I then took my brother's college-graduation gown which was black and put the vader-case through the neck-hole. Then, I nailed the whole thing to my wall and it looked like the real Darth Vader was in my room! And, yes, I did this two years ago when I was 24 and ok, I'm lying, I just did this two days ago to commemorate "Me-Buying-The-Trilogy-on-DVD-Day" which, in some circles, is also known as "this past Saturday."

I honestly think you're making it up after the fact.
Star Wars seemed like a natural part of my life until I was about 11, in 1990. Up until that point, Boba Fett was just kinda there. I remember the whole toy business, but beyond that, meh. The books in those days, what few there were, ONLY focused on the main characters. It's not like the bajillion spin-offs for everyone who had two seconds of screentime. I remember him showing up a couple times in the old Marvel comic, but even there he didn't do much.
After that, I mostly forgot about Star Wars until re-releases in the late 90's, and by THEN, he had become this stupidly popular character. But before that...no way. I'm not buying it. I don't even think I knew his NAME off the top of my head until years after "Jedi." He was simply that forgettable.
Nerds have many powers...but they certainly didn't have friends to talk to in the "school yards."

See, but you guys are SO old, you can't even remember the time frame we're talking about here.
1st movie came out in 1977.
2nd movie came out in 1980.
3rd movie came out in 1983.
1978 has nothing to do with anything.
I defy ANYONE to find ANYTHING that indicates ANYONE ANYWHERE was waiting breathlessly for what Boba Fett might (not) do next between "Empire" and "Jedi." After "Jedi," yeah, I buy it, because I'll bet you ten to one people were surprised he just came back in the first place, much less did anything. Plus, between the 2nd and 3rd movies, you still had the anticipation...people didn't know what would happen. Unlike today, they were happy to leave the fate of the series in Lucas' hands. After the 3rd movie was done, and seemingly there would be NOTHING else, THEN all the "further adventures" and "fan fiction" stuff started picking up.
And I remember all that stuff...being a kid then actually helps, since I was raised literally on a diet of Star Wars for an entire decade. I stopped paying attention right around '91, when I was 12...the last thing I remember reading from all that shiznit was the Timothy Zahn trilogy...then I tuned out until the re-releases. And somewhere in all of that...1991-1996...Boba Fett somehow became "cool." BUT NOT BEFORE.
Yeah, there was the whole toy thing...but I'm talking what it's been like in the last 10+ years, where the guy is talked about like he's best damn thing in all the movies.

That doesn't count, just because of its whackness. And it still doesn't help the cause for Fett, since there's zippy bumping him up before "Empire" except for the figure sale.
How many people actually remembered the poorly animated character in that ended up being the guy in "Empire" whose name isn't even said?

BTW - I downloaded that cartoon a few years back, and if I recall correctly, the cartoon made it out that he was some kind of robot instead of a human because he wasn't affected by something that affected humans (my memory's really fuzzy on this). An inconsistancy in the SW universe? I'm shocked.

That doesn't count, just because of its whackness.
Well in that case, none of this Star Wars stuff counts.

As far as me - my memory is just fine! The only way to have understood what was going on there was to be soaked up in it.
See, you are looking at things backwards with complete historical perspective. At the time, we didn't know the Holiday special was lame. To be 8 - 12 when that came out simply meant that you were insane, and your madness was completely and totally consumed with STAR WARS. Kenner toys, albums, Mad Magazines, appearances on SNL, lame Holiday specials - anything to scratch that itch, until the next movie.
SPLINTER OF THE MOTHER FUCKING MINDS EYE, DAWGS! That's what I'm talking about!!!
The Holiday special absolutely counts! It's what first tweaked people's titties to begin with about Boba Fett, followed by the toys, followed by EMPIRE, and followed by the books of the time.
I had a hard core friend back in those days (named his dog "Luke," and had every single little piece of thing they could get the kids to take in), and he was a MAJOR Boba Fett fan after EMPIRE, and loved to speculate, etc.
Lots of rumors as to his origins - was he once a STORM TROOPER? Was he related to Han Solo? Was he a robot? Of course, they ruined all of that withh the pussy-ass JANGA FETT and the ugly mutt child that's supposed to be Boba!
PAH!
You may have me beat at Smurfs trivia, but dontcha try and say there wasn't a certain Space Madness with Boba Fett back in the late 1970s/early 1980s!
Peace in the Middle East...

Didn't say mikey was wrong about the toy. I'm just baffled by the ever-increasing lameness of the 70's in general. The proliferation of a non-entity like Boba Fett into some kind of towering figure of modern pop culture withOUT a geek-friendly tool like the internet honestly boggles my mind. At least the digital age SOMEWHAT excuses this happening. To think dorks in the 70's did it with the technological equivalent of homing pigeons is ridiculous.
In short, I don't believe it.
Was the guy somehow popular, in a "cult-ish" kind of way, from the Xmas special and the toy? Sure. Does it even compare to the near-CHURCH that's been made around him in the 90's? Not even close.
Splinter of The Mind's Eye focused on the major characters from the first film. It was basically a sequel before "Empire." That's what I said...the relatively few books compared to what would come in the 90's were almost always about the main characters. The goddamn annoying nitpicking of every little thing that showed up on screen didn't hit until after the Zahn books blew it up again.

Wow, what a derail. I was born in 77 and I remember Boba Fett being a much loved character among my collector friends (my parents wouldn't buy me shit unless it was for Christmas and I was too young for SW figures, mostly).
Secondly, Darth Vader is protecting the Emporer but it doesn't matter because the whole thing is retarded. Especially since in Empire he kind of suggests to Luke that they kill the emporor and rule the galaxy as father, son and the holy spirit or some such shit.
Star Wars was a fun serial with terrible inconsistencies and enough bad acting to make Spiceworld three times over (with the exception of Empire which kicked ass--thank you, Yoda).
What it wasn't was the second coming of the Christ. Don't you think it's time we get over it?

Boba wasn't meant to become as famous as he was/is.
He was famous because he looked cool and it seemed he had a cool rocket jet pack/launcher on his back.
Maybe it was just a neighborhood thing, but I always remember Boba Fett being "cool". I was 8 when Empire came out and remember wanting nothing but the Boba Fett action figure although I personally thought his ship was a bit strange. It's not your average transportation!
And the next few Halloweens after that - dozens of Boba Fetts running around the neighborhood.
Just take him away from the story - Boba Fett, intergalactic bounty hunter. That could make a decent movie.
Now why isn't Admiral Akbar more famous? he had lots more screen time/lines than Boba Fett.
Two words: Squid face.

I was born in 75 and I clearly remember Boba Fett being one of my favorite characters. I even had a shirt with a cool iron on of him on it. I always thought he was a really cool character. Given the amount of screentime he had, there must have been getting more exposure somewhere.
And on a different topic:
I think you are underestimating the power of the Emperor. He was the master. Vader was the apprentice. For all you know, the emperor could have willed Vader to block the saber. Who knows...

Mojo's ex-girlfriend got banged at a sci-fi convention on a replica of the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise by a guy in a homemade Boba Fett costume.

I think Boba Fett was all hype. I was born in 1965 and by the time Star Wars came out, I was old enough to get more of a uncluttered mental image of the cast of Star Wars and Boba Fett was def. a minor player in the movies! He "looked cool" but that was about it!

Jesus H. tap-dancin' Christ in a side car!!
C'mon people. It's A Freakin' movie, not way of life.
I saw the original theatrical release at the Rt4 3-plex ( soon to be seven plex)
The only theater in NJ to be fitted for the Dolby soundtrack. And it was awesome ( for a 12 year old)
I was so into it for damn near a month, then realized I need to have a life.
You guys need to find some hobbies, or get laid more often.
It is a movie. A fine movie, but a movie none the less.
Focus your energies on some community service. Help the homeless, single moms, PAL, something.
Put the freakin' DVD's away!

I'm watching "Jedi" on DVD right now and I just realized that Lucas has made Jabba greener than that yellow-pudding-ish color he was in the original! What the fuck?? Why tinker with that of all things??? What he should fix, however, is he should digitally erase that little Jim Henson-esque bird-rat that sits in Jabba's stomach fat!! That little fucker creeps me out!!
