Hi guys,

Got a quick question. I'm looking to expand my collection of 70's era instrumental jazz funk with organ/synth/piano as a central instrument.

I have Herbie Hancock's "Thrust" and "Headhunters", with "Thrust" being a good example of the genre I'm interested in. I particularly love Fender Rhodes Piano and Hammond organs. Another good example is Joe Farrell who made a great record "Penny Arcade". Too bad it was on the label CDI and was never mastered to CD. I actually bought the vinyl some time back and have yet to find a friend with a record player for me to digitize.

I have looked into Weather Report and despite how great Jaco was, they just are lame IMO. They are too fusion-y .

I have several modern acts like Medeski Martin and Wood (their best records being Shackman and Friday Afternoon in the Universe), Soulive, Robert Walters, Galatica (they suck). But I like the old stuff best.

Anyone have some info on the instrumental jazz funk?

thanks!

there was that whole acid jazz push in the mid-90s after the beasties featured it on 'check your head' ... the keyboardist featured on the album, money mark has put out some good records -- especially, mark's keyboard repair ...

he/his style gets referred a lot to jimmy smith ...?

there's also charlie hunter, but his style varies from record to record and not sure if he has one dedicated to funk ... his remake of 'natty dred' was brilliant ...

You want his first three: "Charlie Hunter Trio," "Bing, Bing, Bing!," and "Ready, Set...Shango!" After that he mellows out a bit.

Also try: Soulive, John Scofield, Karl Denison and St. Germain. I found these off a compilation CD "Blue Note: One Label Under a Groove" that I got for free when I bought a Charlie Hunter CD. It's outstanding.

And try Miles Davis, "Bitches Brew."

And T.J. Kirk.

Funny you mention the Beasties. It was songs off Ill Communication that got me interested in this type of music. I then saw Medeski Martin and Wood on Conan one night, and the rest is history.

Thanks for the artists to check out. I already have a ton of Soulive and Scofield but I've never heard of the other guys.

Try Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Robert Randolph and the Family Band is more funk than jazz but they fuckin rock

I saw them open for Clapton this summer and they really tore it up.

I know you already scoped out Jaco but.... take another listen to "Come On Come Over" from his album called PORTRAIT OF TRACY.
It's a really strong track and, for him, it's fairly straight forward.
Lemme know if you dig on it.

FEZ 4 PREZ!
