Today around 2:00 i began to notice my daughter Michele's new rabbit wasn't looking too good. he was laying on his side and not moving and taking just small breaths.
Michele gets home from school at 3 which is when i leave for work 'once she's home" and i tell her we need to check on Shadow. We go upstairs and she realizes right away it's not good and she picks him up and puts him in her lap and he is motionless other than eyes being open and breathing.
Michele begins to cry and i'm concerned for her and it breaks my heart but i had already decided there will be no money spent at the Vet 'things are tight" and it seems like it's common for these dwarf rabbits to get ill and pass away. So i tell her to keep it together and we would not be getting any more rabbits "this is the 2nd one who passed in approx 3 months"
I told her to call Mom and tell her about it and my wife asks to speak to me before I head out to work "now i'm running late". My wife could not believe that I was not calling out sick and bringing the rabbit to the vet and hung up on me!
So i try to give Michele a hug before leaving and she wanted no part of me.
Turns out i called around 8 and they were burying Shadow in the backyard. I talked with my eldest daughter on her cell. I called back several times and left messages at home but noone is calling me back.
So now I'm the bad guy!
Not sure what we may be doing wrong but a day ago Shadow was acting as normal as any other day. We've had him for approx 3 months and all had been fine. I remember FMJeff talking about how rabbits don't last so that sticks in my mind.
What are you gonna do, i usualy have to be the heavy and make the tough decisions...

sorry to hear that, but I personally think that you made the smart decision, especially if it was a money issue. If it was a dog and you chose to do this, I'd call you a scumbag, but rabbits are another story, I've never heard of people bringing their rabbits to the vet (i'm sure they do, but I personally never seen/heard anyone do this.)
but remember, you're the man in the relationship, so whatever choice you make is wrong anyway

Don't worry about. I hated my dad's guts growing up too. ;) We can't always get our way. It'll pass in a couple of days. Now you know how BUSH feels.....you can't please everybody. (I couldn't help it....i had to throw that one in there).
I agree with you.......freaking Vets are expensive. What could they have done anyway? Look at the rabbit, tell you that "It doesn't look good" and charge you something like $500 bucks! That's crazy.
I don't know what to tell you about the rabbit. I had a rabbit too (called Bugs) when I was younger (we didn't have it that long) and pretty much it went the way your rabbit went. I felt bad that somehow that it was my fault that Bugs passed away but eventually got over it. Raising rabbits is hard work and a proper habitat has to be maintained (not that I know what it is).
Just tell your daughter that it was the rabbit's time to go. What the avg. life span of a rabbit in captivity? Maybe 3 months is 5 years in rabbit years or something like that.
I almost forgot. Sorry for your loss.

*HUGS* i do not think you are to blame... i think it is smart not to get another rabbit if this is the 2nd to pass away
your daughter over time will realize that death is a part of life and that SHADOW is now in bunny heaven (since there are separate heavens for different species- i.e. doggie heaven, bunny heaven, etc)
are any other animals a choice to look into.. maybe a dog or cat or fish?
the females in your house have banded against you
maybe next pet you get can be a male

Yeah, we have 3 cats and the one male had gotten a urinary track blockage and it had cost 700. He had to get a cathera and stay overnight. And it's been costing extra to buy food from the vet that they say he needs to help prevent another blockage. To be honest, if he gets another blockage then he's done "unless they will do charity work". I'll shed some tears as i do when any of our cats pass but when you're spending a fairly significant amount of money that could go towards your child's college fund then i have to decide to not spend it at the vet...

Damn this is bring back memories.
I remember when Bugs used to escape out of his box and run all over the house. It was funny finding his little round shaped shits about the house.
I used to take Bugs out to the front garden and people used to stop by to check out the rabbit running around the garden.
One time I took bugs out to the garden and luckily saw that there was a ferret inside the garden to the side of the house. I took bugs back in before he ran around and called animal control to capture the ferret. That thing was huge! Thank goodness I saw it.

Shadow was a little trip too... he'd be standing there still and all of a sudeen he'd jump a foot in the air while twisting his body, hit the ground and start doing laps around the furniture... fast as heck, even the cats couldn't keep up when they'd follow him around

I hear ya funkman, my dog has Epilepsy and an immune disease that affects his skin (part of the English Springer Spaniel breed). it's cositng my family a lot of money on all the different neds he's on, but my dad first wanted to put him to sleep (so he doesn't suffer anymore), but then he said to me "he's part of the family".
it's tough to make these choices, on one hand, it's jsut an animal. But on the other hand, it's a part of you and your family. I actually sat there staring at my dog and actually cried thinking how tough it would be for me to do what we do for him if I had to do it by myself. I would have probably be forced to give him away or put him to sleep if it was just me taking care of him.
As far as your daughter goes, I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a phase right now and she'll see one day that what you did was the right choice

you did the right thing. personally i wouldnt take any animal to a vet. they either end up costin thousands of bucks to get fixed up or they die anyway. i would take it out back with my shotgun.

you're right, she will bounce back
i'm gonna think of a little something special i can do for her...
but she's pretty funny. whenever i try to make up for stuff she says " i know why you're doing this "
maybe a case of Rainbow Berry Sherbert, she loves that stuff so much she'd finish it in a week...

If money is tight I think you should sit down with your daughter and talk to her about death. How old is she? Now is a good time because it's halloween and you can casually bring it up. Good luck!

Funk, not that I'm breaking new ground here, but you did the right thing. Bringing a rabbit to the vet is like starting a holiday fire with $20 bills as kindling. Besides, being pissed at you will likely help distract her from the sorrow for the lost rabbit. When the anger passes, so will the grief & how long could she stay mad at a dad as cool as you?
I hope it all blows over quickly, and I'm sorry for your loss.
ps: Fallon, Holy Crap I almost pissed myself when I saw that picture.

Don't sweat it.
Tell your family that it's not like you took an animal threw it into a bucket of water and let it die.
And if they give you any flack, tell them that buckets come in ALL sizes.

Eh. I took my $6 hamster to the vet when he had cancer and spent a bunch of $$ on his medication. didn't help much, in retrospect. I had a rabbit growing up, and he lived for about 7 years, which is a very ripe old age for a bunny.

Since you're "the bad guy", you should walk around with a toothpick in your mouth and flick it at people.

Michele was pretty good today. She got home from school and i heated her up a nice bowl of 'homemade' beef stew which is one of her favorite. She was still a little upset and suggested that Shadow may have lived if we went to the vet right away but it turned out Shadow passed shortly after I left for work, about 30 minutes or so.
We later went shopping together for her Halloween mask. Three different stores and she couldn't find one she liked so she'll use one of the ones we already have.
She kissed me goodnight and life moves on...

You could have gave her Shadow's lucky rabbit's foot. Not that shadow will need it anymore. That way Shadow will always be with her.
It's not to late to take Shadow to a taxiderme is it??
