I love Wal-Mart (I guess I'm a pussy) but, shit, they're out of their minds with their stupid little rules & regulations & decisions on what their customers want & don't want.

But Wal-Mart spokeswoman Karen Burk said the book was not being stocked in Wal-Mart stores because the company felt it "would not appeal to a majority of our customers." She added Wal-Mart was selling the book online.
Do they still sell guns for kids to use at their schools? And can they get them online?

I am surprised you remeber Jamesway you little tyke you...
Still one of the best jobs I ever had was when I ruled the Jamesway in Souderton, PA for 5 years (18 - 23) as I double-shifted (moonlighted) at KFC, Little Caesars and Ames. Real damn shame the whole company went unde 6 months after I left. Man, the stories I could tell of the shit we did at that place.

I have quite the interest in old department store chains and older strip/shopping malls and their architechture and such and how col things used to be. I have to do some searching for a few of the retail history websites I stumbled upon a few months back and then i can share them. Stupid me for not saving them into my favourites.
I remember this ad from Caldor a few Christmases ago. Pretty funny.

I don't shop in Walmart for books or music. I go there for everything else and the savings on many things are really good. I could care less if they want to or don't want to sell whoever's book. To me it's not censorship but a business decision on their part. There's a huge number of others places to get Jon Stewart's book, so if you don't like it, get it somewhere else. I mean I don't see religious book stores selling it, it's a businesses decision to not sell it and they have a right to.
Walmart is wildly successful and at this stage in the retail game they have a pretty good idea what they're doing. All these other stores have fallen by the wayside, yet Walmart has daily cash flows that revial that of some countries. I've even read in articles It's at the point where if Walmart actually closed it's doors today that it would significantly affect the economy. They are smart and successful, and have a good formula for business. We might not like that they don't sell everything we want, but the ultimate decision to buy or sell anything they want or don't to sell is purely theirs and they have a right to make that decision. It would be different if there wasn't your amazon.com's or Barnes and Nobels or Borders or BooksAMillion, or any other place, but there are tons of alternative ways to get it.

I loved the Caldor stores. There's actually one of the closed stores nearby where I work in Melville that still has the sign outside. I sometimes will see it and wish I could go in and get things there again. I also used to love Korvettes, Two Guys and Mays.

Walmart is wildly successful and at this stage in the retail game they have a pretty good idea what they're doing
That good idea is to import cheap foreign products from underpaid laborers, ban unions, make employees work unpaid hours, fail to promote women and minorities destroy local economies. And wrap themselves in the American Flag while doing it.

Hey, I'm not defending their business tactics. But the fact of the matter is, that Walmart is a huge success and they know what they're doing. I totally agree with you about their policies and the way they conduct business, however they do it and they're a monster.

If Wal Mart Corp. was an individual person he would be locked up forever for being a sociopath. But because it's a corporation, it gets away with everything that is not socially acceptable for individuals to do.

I used to like going to Woolworths, and Newberrys which always seemed to be in the malls. There used to be a Newberrys in the Smithhaven mall, and a Woolworths in the Roosevelt Field mall. Though I'd seen a few Newberry's in different states as well so I always figured it was a chain.

I've always thought of Wal-Mart as a tightly woven good news/bad news entity. On the plus side, they were really the first non- techie company to use information technology wisely (late '80's thru the present) and built a killer supply chain system that they used to kick their competion's collective ass. They also don't use their near monopolistic position to raise prices and their stores seem to be "clean, well-lighted places" (call back to the Ernest Hemingway short story).
On the negative side, they are too successful at killing off the local competition, essentially snuffing out small retail entrepeneurs in most of the country and they are way too cheap with their workers.
Slate had an interesting comparion of Wal-Mart and Costco, particularly in re: their corporate cultures
Shopping Red State/Shopping Blue State (http://slate.msn.com/id/2104988)
BTW Sam's Club is a division of Wal-Mart

Newberrys was actually founded in Stroudsburg, Pa. And as of 2 years ago, I think still open.
haven't been to those parts in a while so I can't be sure.
Actually, now that I think about it, the building was empty. Sorry!

According to my data the first 24-Hour Wal-Mart Super-Center is opening in the Spring of next year in Cherry Hill. Working for my company (PRN) we get a list of new stores coming on board so we can help with the In-Store TV Network cabling and programming.
I don't know, in some ways I like Wal-Mart and some ways I don't. I guess much like Wrestling Federations back in the late 70's- early 80's Department Stores were very regional and everyone kind of kept to their region. K-Mart then exploded nationwide in the 70's and 80's and then into the 90's after Sam Walton died, Sam's kids went apeshit and just started opening Stores EVERYWHERE. Small business will close because of the impact of such a big corporate store coming into the area. It sucks but all I keep thinking is, one day, they too will fall and someone bigger and better will come along.
It is just getting crazy down here around Philly cause we had the first WM in Philly at Penns Landing in South Philly. Then 16 miles Northeast at Franklin Mills. Then one 8 miles Southwest on Adams Ave. and Rt. 1. Ok, so there was 3. in the middle of all of those a new store just opened on Grant Ave. and Rt.1 (5 miles from Franklin Mills and 4 miles from Adams Ave. There is one being built in Port Richmond which is in the middle of Franklin Mills and penns Landing. Northeast there is going to be one 5 miles from Franklin Mills and 5 miles from Levittown which also has a new store that just opened 6 miles away in Bristol. Pretty much it is getting crazy as by the end of next year there will be 7 stores in Philly and a total of 15 in the greater Philadelphia area. They are sprouting up all over Jersey as well.
Speaking of which, anyone looking for a job come next Spring?
