I'm a ska music fan and was wondering if there are any other ska music lovers out there on the board. Next year I'm doing a streaming radio show of all ska from my school that you guys will be able to hear.

Yeaahhhhh... I cant lie its OK for me in small doses but after a while I wanna hear a guitar hit a chord on the down beat. Very early Fishbone is kinda close but I really like it because it evolved into the band that put out Truth and Soul.

I get this way with most reggae too. Most.

The Onion has those headlines that dont link to a story but theyre funny as fuck anyway, in one issue:

Ska Band Outnumbers Audience

I love older ska...the British 2Tone stuff is some of the greatest music man has ever made.

Most of it today blows. The American-style that fills up modern ska is too gimmick-y and schticky...it all sounds the same.

The stubborn all stars, the specials, the slackers. I'm probably forgetting other bands, but that's ok. I like bands like that. Bands that are mellow.

I really don't like ska bands like Less Then Jake, Streetlight Manifesto, Rell Big fish. They, hoenstly, annoy the fuck out of me.

them and the skatellites are great, the west coast shit is just awful derivative, soulless crap...

for some reason, you need to be either british or caribbean to make good ska music ...

i used to be a big ska fan, but not so much anymore. some of the local NY bands were good when i was in high school (mid 90s) - the pietasters, scofflaws, inspecter 7, the ny ska jazz ensemble, etc. i don't really know too much about the scene anymore, though.

Pietasters were cool...and actually a good ol' DC band!

The first 3-4 Bosstones' albums are still good for a larff.

I'm still a pretty big ska fan. Some of my favorites are Skankin Pickle, Mustard Plug, and Reel Big Fish. Oh and Spunge, this UK Ska band. Man, they're awesome.

A newer ska-core-y-ish band I've been listening to lately is New Blood Revival. I just saw them open for the Toasters about a month ago. Worth checking out.

The Scofflaws used to put on a hell of a show.

Great film...and an even greater album...

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000008ETH.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

And even though "This Are Two Tone" was the first comp for that label/genre, this newer one is a much better snapshot of the great British ska in the 80's...I think it's all of the singles Two Tone ever released...

I am a huge ska fan of all types of ska, i am not bias towards earlier or later stuff.

But I am suprised no one on here has mentioned the Toasters considering they changed Ska in the 90's.

Mustard Plug, LTJ, RBf, Pietasters, Army of Juan(was good for a few songs), Bucket O'Nine, Heft(great jersey ska band that broke up), Wormbath(more PA Punk, but had ska influence in some songs), the list goes on and on.

My favorite US ska comps?

The "Skarmageddon" series put out by Moon Ska Records in the 90's.

When MSR finally folded, that shut the door for "modern" ska in my book.

I remember seeing Mustard Plug at a venue around where i live when i was like 12/13.

I'm suprised no one mentioned Madness or Operation Ivy.

Also, The Pilfers are pretty good. Coolie from The Toasters & Vinnie from BimSkalaBim are in the band.

PS- Stay away from Catch 22, they're awful

I always preferred "second wave" ska, like The Specials, The English Beat, General Public, Madness, etc.

I do like some third wave. I liked the Bosstones, but haven't listened to any of their newer albums. I like some Reel Big Fish, like Dropkick, but havn't listened to much ska in a few years.
