The Guardian, one of Britain's most respected newspapers, ran a column by Charlie Brooker last week ending with this paragaph:
On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod's law dictates he'll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed ...
On Sunday the Guardian not only removed the article, but had this to say:
The final sentence of a column in The Guide on Saturday caused offence to some readers. The Guardian associates itself with the following statement from the writer.
"Charlie Brooker apologises for any offence caused by his comments relating to President Bush in his TV column, Screen Burn. The views expressed in this column are not those of the Guardian. Although flippant and tasteless, his closing comments were intended as an ironic joke, not as a call to action - an intention he believed regular readers of his humorous column would understand. He deplores violence of any kind."
The article has now been removed from the Guardian Unlimited website.
The eyes of the world will be watching...

This board will be a very interesting place come Wednesday.
I'm split this way... I'm a moderate Republican. In fact, my views mirror governor Schwarzenegger... financial conservative, social moderate.
I believe in the woman's right to choose and stem cell research, but I also believe that welfare and other things have to be locked down.
I don't want to vote for Bush, but I certainly don't want to vote for Kerry.
I'm a swing state, so I'm fucking screwed either way.

Look at it this way - even if you hate Kerry, what is the worst he can do with a Republican congress? He is going to be forced to work with them and together they may actually move some stuff through that appeal to the larger American population. I was talking to a friend last night who lives in Ohio - a "former Republican" - registered Independent - former military - and he made up his mind this last week to vote for Kerry because he thinks real conservatives will actually get more out of having the balance of power split once again.

I hope this would be the case should he get elected. I know that it worked for Bill Clinton and a republican congress. However I think that one of the reasons more people haven't given Kerry more heat is that he comes off as far more liberal than Clinton ever was. Clinton I think surprised a lot of people because he adapted to the congress he had to deal with and he and we ultimately benefited from this economically. I think Clinton has always appeared as more of a moderate (whether or not he actually was), though his actions showed that he was someone who could work with others. Well, I think this was the case at least during the first three years of his second term.

Clinton had to adapt when the Democrats lost out in 1992. His second term, a lot of good bi-partisan work was overshadowed by the impeachment.
Gore was actually a true moderate, but somehow got painted into the "liberal" corner that everyone (except Nader voters) bought.

Agreed. This is what I was suggesting. Clinton could have vetoed things and made political war, but instead he worked with republicans. Far more often than I think he really needed to. I think people in general appreciated that. However with regards to Kerry, I don't think it will be nearly as smooth a go as that. Not that Bush has done well with his own congress. However I think if Kerry does lose, it will be because he came off more liberal than Bill Clinton did.

I have got to put this gem up here. To me, it is up there with The Lord's Prayer.
This by no means is meant to cross party lines, but the following passage just rings so true for me. 150 years later
I do not forget the gravity which should characterize a paper addressed to the Congress of the nation by the Chief Magistrate of the nation. Nor do I forget that some of you are my seniors, nor that many of you have more experience than I, in the conduct of public affairs. Yet I trust that in view of the great responsibility resting upon me, you will perceive no want of respect yourselves, in any undue earnestness I may seem to display.
Is it doubted, then, that the plan I propose, if adopted, would shorten the war, and thus lessen its expenditure of money and of blood? Is it doubted that it would restore the national authority and national prosperity, and perpetuate both indefinitely? Is it doubted that we here--Congress and Executive--can secure its adoption? Will not the good people respond to a united, and earnest appeal from us? Can we, can they, by any other means, so certainly, or so speedily, assure these vital objects? We can succeed only by concert. It is not "can any of us imagine better?" but, "can we all do better?" The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disentrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.
Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation. We say we are for the Union. The world will not forget that we say this. We know how to save the Union. The world knows we do know how to save it. We -- even we here -- hold the power, and bear the responsibility. In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth. Other means may succeed; this could not fail. The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just -- a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless.
Abraham Lincoln

I say we have a potato sack race with the two pres/vp teams.
Whoever hops across the finish line first gets to be president.
That way, pesky elections won't matter.
[color=Red]Good thing they didn't have this when FDR and Bob Dole ran.
hey, you're not fooling me with that one. FDR NEVER ran (at least while in office).

BLACK RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!
Whats a nubian?
So I voted just a little bit ago and here is my story.
I think the republicans strategy is to have hot girls outside giving out the republican ballots. This one girl was giving me the eye, and I was to her as well and she handed me the Republican ticket and I said NO WAY, then I saw the Democrat pushers and they gave me theirs and I said ABSOLUTELY and then another Republican guy tried to slip me his ballot and I said NO NO NO! I then couldn't figure out the voting booth cause ours here in Perkasie (Bucks Co. PA REPRESENT!) are from the stone age. It felt so liberating though. I felt so damn American it gave me douche chills. Then as I left both girls followed me out to the curb and waved as I left. I should have let them try and convert me.
EDIT: Oh yeah, when did the Democrats start being referred to as Liberals and the Republicans as Conservatives? The whole Lib/Conserv title seems to be thrown around a whole lot more these days. Like even in the Campaign Ads its not "You Bad Democrats" but it is "You Bad Liberals" blah blah blah.

What happens if there is still a long line at the polling places when 8PM (closing time) rolls around? Do they turn the people who are waiting on line away?
Voted for Kerry in NY last week via absentee ballot since I never changed my official address from NY to NJ.

I beleive that, by law, if you are on line at the time the polls close that they must let you vote.

No, I believe they close the doors to the polling places at 8:00 though if people are still waiting they let those people cast their vote. If the line stretches beyond the doors at 8 I think that what happens is that someone from the polling place stands at the end of the line and doesn't let any others come on the line. There may even be a police presence if that happens.

Woke up at 5:30am - was 32nd in line by 5:45am - finished voting by 6:10am - had my McGriddle at 6:15am.
Felt GREAT!
Four years of frustration and bitching and quibbling and getting caught in silly discussions on message board came down to that very real moment.
The line was huge as I left - I would be so proud of Virginia if they shock everyone with an upset win for Kerry.
(Bush is getting spanked in Pennsylvania, btw).
I refuse to get excited about anything more than exercising my right to vote, which is pretty cool - 20th year doing it.
Today there was a kid in line with me, wearing his trench coat and bondage pants, voting for the first time, and a sweet old woman who (I'm afraid) was more than likely votinig in her last election.
God Bless America, Mutha fuckahs!

My first time voting in Massachusetts, first time using a paper ballot. Looked like an SAT test with large print. Almost every race had a Democrat running unopposed. So I didn't have to vote in those races. The other race had two repulsive candidates (a Republican and a Democrat) so I abstained from voting there. Filled in the circle for Bush/Cheney and laughed knowing that me and 6 other people in the entire state were voting Republican.
Oh well.

The early exit polls really mean nothing. Businesses close later and that is when you will have more people voting.
I sincerely hope and pray the George Bush wins this election. I cannot see Kerry making an important decision.

Voting in my county (Suffolk) was so boring though. I think one of county justice seats had more than two (dem & rep) candidates, in addition to the presedential election. There were also only two village propositions to vote on (buy land to preserve as open space, and build a new village municiple building in what's currently a trash heap. wow, hard choices!)

It's over. Nothing to see here anymore. George W. Bush is going to win his 2nd term as President of the United States. What pisses me of is that the news coverage is asking questions like "How will the president unite the country after this bitter election?". Why the fuck are you asking that? Did Bush unite the country after he won his first term as president. Hell's no--what makes you think he is going to change now. The only good thing about him being president again is that he won't have anyone to blame for his mistakes he will be making.........oh wait....I forgot Bush never makes mistakes and it's never his fault when things go wrong. OK. I'll be the first liberal on the board to give up. With all the money we raised, with all the people who volunteered time and effort and with a candidate who has as horrible a record (as I believe) George W. Bush has, for him to be running as strongly as he is and likely to win the popular vote, it is obvious to me that I'm not seeing the same reality as the majority of the people of this country. If the Democrats can't win this election it is going to be a long time (if ever) before they win another.
So, I guess I stipulate that Jesus loves us more than anybody; we should be able to invade anybody who pisses us off; that we can cut taxes to 0% and nothing bad will happen; abortion should be illegal, pollution only culls the herd and makes the survivors stronger and a lot of other things I'll probably think of tomorrow.
So for now I'll take my tax cuts and retire to the study to deliberate whether I want the Northeast to secede or whether I'll be working on a states rights manifesto for liberal secularists.
Good night.

i think it's very likely that the Democrats could win in 4 years. People will probably be ready for a change after 8 years of Bush, and I don't see many strong GOP candidates down the road. As long as the Democrats don't run a hump like Kerry again, they could win.
"Anyone but Bush" isn't good enough. The candidate himself has to have substance.

Bush supporters do it because 1. He mentions God whenever he can and 2. They relate to his simple minded thinking.

Man, it's pretty insulting when you're called "foolish" just because of who you vote for...and apparently that's all the Democrats are good at (Nader voter 2000, WHUT!!!) besides losing.
Look at it this way, no matter which side you fall on...think of how much you absolutely hate the guy being run by the other side. Imagine how much you're against EVERYTHING he stands for, and can't wait to see him fail. Now realize that the people on the other side think THE EXACT SAME WAY ABOUT YOUR GUY. People aren't "foolish" or "stupid" just because they vote for the opposing candidate to "your guy"...it's their choice because they hate YOUR guy just as much as you hate THEIR guy.
Got it?
How is one side any more foolish than the other?

Can't WAIT to see the flailing and excuse-making of the Democrats this time.
And I say this as someone who wants DESPERATELY to be a proud Democrat.
2000...they run the the VP of the incumbent administration...an administration with a president leaving office with an approval rating basically in the 70's(!!!!!!!) and leaving behind 8 years of peace and economic prosperity...and they FUCKING LOSE. Yet all they can do is bitch and cry about Florida, or Nader, or hanging chads, or confusing ballots...AND DON'T MENTION ONCE THAT THEY COULDN'T WIN THE HOME STATES OF EITHER THE PRESIDENT OR THE VICE PRESIDENT. They seemingly don't stop to consider the ridiculous problem of such a scenario.
Now, four years later, they should have the White House handed to them on a silver platter thanks to one of the worst presidents we've had in our nation's history, and the BEST candidate they can decide on is JOHN F. KERRY, and the BEST he can do is barely keep pace with Bush, if that.
Who are they gonna blame this time? Well, according to some of the posts I've seen here, and on boards elsewhere and blogs, "stupid voters." Yet AGAIN the problem isn't with the party's lack of identity, or scattershot and inconsistent policies, or wishy-washy candidates...no, it must be EVERYONE ELSE'S fault except themselves.
What a goddamn mess of a party.
The Republicans used their 8 years of Reagan to strengthen their base and focus their party. Republicans of ALL colors, from those on the fence to those waaaaaaaaaaaay off to the insane Right, can easily find someone or something in the party that represents them, and allows them to vote for the Elephant with confidence and resolution. They know what they're doing.
The Democrats completely squandered their 8 years of Clinton, COMPLETELY losing their identity, pandering ONLY to the middle for the sake of staying in office, and are basically a united party in name only. They represent essentially nobody, and only parts and bits and pieces of various causes and issues. If they're smart, they'd shut up and dig their heels in, stand what little ground they have left over the next four years, and DRASTICALLY re-evaluate how this party is going to continue in the 21st Century, because at this point they represent nothing, nobody and will ultimately know nothing but defeat for the forseeable future.
Fuck "vote or die."
CHANGE or die.

I base my decisions on facts not emotions and all facts say that Bush is a liar. He is not trustworthy. He is not intelligent. He is not making the correct decisons.
He says things for soundbyte purposes but does the opposite. People eagerly swallow and believe the sound byte and refuse to believe the truth when it comes out months later hidden under fluff, denials, and misdirections.
He and his whole administration found loopholes and connections to avoid service in Vietnam.
How can he keep us safe when 9/11 already happened under his watch?

Strangely, I agree with Mojo. If the Democrats put up a better candidate, I would have considered voting for him. But when you have a guy that claims to have many many "plans" but never shares ANY of them, then I'd rather stick with the guy who, like him or not, says what he means.
And, I fucking hate New England. I have to move soon.

Tazz,
not trying to bust your stones
with regard to "protect the country" the worst terrorist attack this country has experienced was under his watch. and it was later found out that there was evidence 'which he knew of' to indicate such an attack may occur
i don't get your reasoning on this
would you not have more faith in someone who actually participated in war instead of avoiding it?
"money in your pocket" at what expense to others? the deficit has gone from balanced to minus 7.8 trillion. more people in poverty while more money was given to the wealthiest americans with the highest tax cut
60% of people who found employment since Bush has been in office has been for lower salaries than they had prior while their cost of living has significantly increased
i'm not saying Kerry is a guarantee to turn things around but you can't say most Americans are better off than they were 4 years ago
do you hold Bush accountable for anything?

Tomorrow's headline: "The Democratic Party was just ass-raped."
He won. He got a majority of the vote. I am just gonna suck it up and pray, and everyone else who voted against Bush just better do the same thing. Might as well get used to praying anyway, it's probably gonna be mandatory in 2 years.
Everybody was saying how Karl Rove was stupid for courting the religious right. But he was right. According to NBC, the biggest issue for voters from exit polls was "Moral Values" and Bush won 80% of that vote. That's what won Ohio.
And the Democrats deserve it. I've tried to convince myself that Kerry was the guy and I almost did at certain points. But I should have known.
So now I am gonna plead with everybody: Can we please all calm down? Can we all just realize we were all so worked up because the stakes were so high and we believed in different ways to solve the problem? Can we, in the future, not equate criticism with treason? Can we stop calling each other stupid? Can we just band together to conquer the problems this nation faces? And can some of us just accept what happened tonight?
Please?

Negative. The GOP ADDED to their majority in the House AND the Senate. They knocked off the Senate Minority Leader -- that's amazing.
The most interesting stat I heard: the Democrats have not been able to get more than 50% of the popular vote in a Presidential election since 1976.

It really is funny how one news organization is looking at it one way and another is looking another way. It appears that Bush will win though no one is willing to say it just yet, and I have no problem with them taking the time to make certain that when they do call the winner that that person is the actual winner. Instead of just calling something because things seem to go one way over another. I don't want a repeat of 4 years ago, however I think if it takes a day or two to sort this out then let's do it and be done with it.

The only thing I hope comes out of this is that maybe now all these celebrities will finally get it that we really don't need their input on how we should or shouldn't vote. I don't care what Ben Affleck thinks, I don't care what Ted Nugent thinks, or the Barbara Steisand's, or Michael Moore's, or whoever else. I think it should be a wake up call to them that they have absolutely no influence on people and that they should stick to what they do best.
Which isn't to suggest they aren't entitled to their opinion on things. But rather that they have their air about themselves that they are so much more important than they really are and they need to get over themselves.

I'm going to take back my comment since it seems like Ohio's not decided yet, even though Bush is going to claim it is. Once again, the "rule of law party" decides that it doesn't need to let the process follow through to its conclusion.

BTW, this Ohio thing is coming up closer than people had thought earlier. it may be this years florida.
I cant imagine a court wanting this, even touching this. The Supreme Court wants nothing to do with this; Ohio has told the lawyers to back off, and let us do our thing; even if it takes 10 days to validate and count.
Fuck the lawyers; I'll trust the peeps of Ohio for now.

I would definitely like to see a breakout of the vote from the under 25's, from blacks to whites as well. It may just be that Kerry won with them, but I'd like to see idiots like P Diddy with their absolutely horrid "Vote or Die" campaign eat it.
I'd also like to see a comparison with that group from 2000 and 2004 to see if they made any real difference at all.

Congratulations to the Bush voters and supporters.. $4.00 gallon of gas in the very near future, ruin our environment + economy, major terrorist attacks in the US, having an idiot as a leader... Thank You hillbilly states...

For me, this is the worst possible outcome. Bush winning the popular and electoral vote speaks of an American mindset that I don't agree with in the slightest. I don't see how Kerry can pick up 150,000 votes in Ohio. We are doomed.

Who is thinking THAT?! If anything, one of the problems with the Democrats in 2002 and this year is that they have tried to out Republican the Republicans - the "Liberal" died with Paul Wellstone, except in the Karl Rove created echo chamber.
What are the Dems going to say now?It looks like Bush will win the electoral and POPULAR vote
That wasn't the over-arcing issue in 2000. Sure it was a bitter pill for many to swallow (imagine if Ohio had gone to Kerry by a margin of 500 votes, and Bush held the popular vote numbers? Actually it would be even worse now, because Bush is going to get one of the most decisive wins in the popular vote - and still he could have lost the Presidency) - but the thing to remember is that both camps sign onto the whole concept of electoral college to begin with, so the complaining in 2000 was more for what a nightmare Florida turned out to be.
And then Nader...and then Gore getting pushed and pulled from the middle (the only real moderate that has fucking run for President in forever!)...and the media...there was a lot for people to be cranky about in 2000.
we need a thread called Official 2004 Election Day After Thread.

ABCnews.com, CBSnews.com, washingtonpost.com : Bush 254 / Kerry 242
Foxnews.com: Bush 269 / Kerry 242
msnbc.com: Bush 269 / Kerry 238
nytimes.com: Bush 249 / Kerry 242
How is he going to unite the country? He can't even unite the news services.
I was watching when Fox called ohio, and it wasn't much longer until NBC called it as well. Everyone else hasn't yet--probably gunshy from '00. I was watching the msnbc online while I was still at work and they were confusing the hell out of me with Cali. They had added it to the electoral votes but not put it on the map as blue. I kept adding up MD, NY, IL, NJ over and over again, and it was nowhere near 199. Confused the hell out of me.

He cheated us before, he'll cheat us again this time.
I don't understand how anyone can call cheating at this point? Bush won the popular vote by close to 4 million votes last time I checked. As far as what's going on in Ohio, I think this whole process will be very closely watched and nothing up to this point suggests otherwise.
Now as far as voter fraud and things like that go, I can say from a personal standpoint that a number of people I know who have voted in many elections in the same polling places had problems this time around where the polling place had no record of them. I also heard this on the radio as well. I know there is a number to call to report this for investigation and people need to do this because something is wrong as far as that goes and it needs to investigated. If it turns out one campaign or another in involved in tampering with this then there will be a problem.
However as it stands now it's just a close election in certain states and I think we should wait until all the tabulations are complete before we start bantering about cheating at this stage in the game.

A bit of a rant, might seem harsh, but...
It seems unlikely Kerry will pull this one off, though I'm not ready to give up. But if Bush is elected, we're really screwed. The irony is that many of the people who decided this election voted for Bush based on terrorism, something that will never directly effect most red staters but would definitely occur in all the cities that voted for Kerry. Thanks to the vote of people in the South and Midwest, the people of NY, DC, Chicago and LA are all in more danger.
Ironically, among those who voted for Bush, the economy wasn't a big issue, despite the fact that many people in the Midwest and South <i>will</i> be affected by <i>that</i> issue.
The most depressing thing was how many people voted based on "moral issues" and how every state that had a "ban same sex marriage" amendment on the ballot saw it passed. With Bush in office and the Supreme Court to have a few new justices soon, the people who want to ban abortion and write discrimination into the Constitution will likely see their moral agenda supported by the government. And society will take a collective step backwards.
I'm quite depressed and angry today. I feel like we're in a great deal of trouble as a nation.

When Bush won in 2000, I thought "how bad can it be?" and pretty much didn't care.
Then I saw how bad it could be.
We get to suffer through another four years.
Wow.
