Stern will be leaving WJFK at some point - maybe forced off earlier so they can get the new show going. There are a lot of options for them in the AM, including bringing The Sports Junkies back over, but the only one that makes sense is putting D&M back on in the mornings, after 13 years.

They usually do either as well as Howard or even do better in some books, so it's kind of a no brainer - at least for DC, Baltimore and maybe Tampa.

Which opens the 3 - 7 shift, which only makes sense for R&F to inherit.

Hmmmmm...!

This is based purely on some on air hinting a few weeks ago, when Ron referenced a cryptic conversation with Don in the hallways after the Stern announcement, as well as a rumor at DCRTV that speculates about D&M going to mornings when Stern leaves.

WJFK To 94.7? - 11/4 - From DCRTV's Rumorama. We've heard it before and we're hearing it again. If its DC radio cluster revenue does not improve, Infinity might just sell Manassas-licensed 106.7 and move WJFK-FM's calls and talk programming to Bethesda-licensed 94.7. Replacing WARW's lowish-rated classic rock. Maybe by early 2005. The signal of 94.7 better blankets the DC region, particularly the northeastern suburbs. We also hear that WJFK-FM's studios would remain Fairfax, due to afternoon drive team "Don And Mike," both residents of Northern Virginia, not wanting to travel to Infinity's main studio complex in Lanham. D&M may be moving to WJFK's morning drive when Howard Stern moves to Sirius....

DCRTV (http://www.dcrtv.com)

That would be a huge deal for R&F, who might also be able to pick up many of the old D&M affiliates across the country if they start shifting and sliding.

Again...based only on mindless speculation!

I think that is the only shift they have never done.

I hope it goes over for them. It would be great if they got syndicated to more places.

What makes you think when Howard leaves Infinity that they'll keep any of their talk shows? I think Infinity has demonstrated that they have no clue how to manage or promote any of these stations. My guess is that by the time Howard is gone, that Ron and Fez will be long gone, probably to the world of satellite radio, or another radio network.

Mindless speculation does not = worry.

Because it actually works in Washington at WJFK - it has since he came on board in 1990/1991 and they got D&M in 1991/1992. Those two shows make a ton of $$ for WJFK and Infinity. WJFK and WPGC are what's keeping other Infinity stations in the area (the Arrow and WHFS) afloat.

Don and Mike are an abysmal failure in other markets. I'm certain that Infinity will look to fill the the mornings on their radio network with a nationally syndicated show. Do you think they want the salaries of 40 or 50+ morning show guys around the country , or just pay one show for a national show with a national audience reach. Don and Mike will not be that show. I would hope that Ron and Fez would be that show, though at this point I don't see it in the cards. My guess is that before Stern leaves the air in 14 1/2 months is that most of Infinity's talk shows will be gone, including Don and Mike. Hot talk didn't work for Infinity because they had no idea how to market or promote these shows. The only national success is Howard Stern and it's through his own work that they are successful. There is and has never been a brainiac at Infinity other than Mel Karmazin who knows hows talent there. With Mel and Howard gone the future of talk radio in the Infinity broadcasting system is done plain and simple.

(((((sigh)))))

No they are not.

Do you think they want the salaries of 40 or 50+ morning show guys around the country , or just pay one show for a national show with a national audience reach. Don and Mike will not be that show. There is no one to fill Stern's shoes - the individual stations will more than likely use the money they are not spending on Stern currently to aggressively go after other top talent in their own markets.

What that means is, whoever is doing well locally, either the AM competion or (in D&M's situation) on the same station, across the country stands the chance of inherting Stern's slot - IN THAT MARKET ONLY.

They will not be able to find someone to plug into all of the stations.

I thought I had been clear that Infinity would more than likely promote D&M to mornings in DC, and maybe Baltimore and maybe Tampa, but not everywhere. Why is there this blind rage reaction whenever they are even referenced?

Why is impossible to believe that a show that has been on the air for 20 years, syndicated for over 10, been number one in three different time slots, makes tens of millions of dollars a year for their employers (without putting their licenses in jeopardy) - actually has listeners? What? - because they sucked it in New York and Philly - and they admitted it? Because a comic continues to get cheap laughs by making fun of the victims of the DC sniper in reference to them? Or because a another show (that, in the end, couldn't do as much for R&F as D&M covertly has) tells their fans that they are a failure? Sheesh.

Any-who - D&M: Sacramento is also a shoe in, where they are huge (btw: Sacramento is actually a more lucrative radio revenue market than even New York, $$ wise); Vegas and Buffalo are also possibilities.

I never meant to imply they would be on in New York, Philly, Boston or Cleveland, where they either tanked or were never cleared to begin with - so, no need to freak out over nothing. No one is forcing anyone to listen to anything that they don't want to.

Infinity may ultimately try to find someone like a Jon Stewart, who has national appeal, etc., but don't expect all of the stations to carry Stern to opt in. The non-Infinity stations can do whatever they want. I wouldn't be surprised to see a rash of stations dropping off soon.

I understand that. However my point is that speculating about this I think is futile because I think the future of talk format programming on Infinity channels will be coming to an end when Stern leaves the public airwaves. Unless they can find a suitable show to replace Stern, which I don't know if it is either possible, or not likely.

In fact, I have heard speculation that Mel Karmazin is working on a radio network that would be broadcast to either XM or Sirius or both that would likely include many of the on-air talents that are on Infinity stations. If this happens perhaps he would be looking to sway the likes of a Don and Mike or Ron and Fez, etc.

The last arbitron ratings I saw for WJFK overall had them at around a 2.8 for the last two ratings periods, which is pretty low in comparison to other radio networks, which are pulling in 5's. Now I don't have the individual ratings for Don and Mike or Ron and Fez's show, but I am curious to see how their ratings have been trending over the past year.

From the Washington Times: WJFK, the station that carries Howard Stern's syndicated program, moved to seventh place during morning drive from ninth place last summer. Among listeners between 25 and 54, the group most radio advertisers target, WJFK rose from fifth to third place in the morning.

DCRTV: Afternoon drive, same demo: WJFK-FM 1st, WMMJ 2nd, WPGC-FM 3rd, WTOP 4th, WHUR 5th, WKYS 6th, WTEM and WRQX 7th, WMAL and WASH 9th, WJZW and WMZQ 11th, WBIG 13th, WARW 14th, Z104 15th, WGMS 16th, DC101 17th, WIHT 18th, WHFS 19th, WBZS/WBPS 20th.

Curtoid you could be right, I'm just expressing my views on this. I just see it differently than you do.
