I have a rant so long I'd ban myself if I posted it, but the good news = there are Setups out there that are Cheap and Good enough for learning and jamming.
For $150, spend $149 on a nice electric guitar setup, and $1 on a dark hood, and go steal a nice acoustic guitar, and learn on that.
Enough Mike, STFU~!

unless its used, you cant really get a good guitar under 150. for a new one, just to be solid, usually start at 300 and even those arent so common

Wow, low price point but doable.
In fact, I don't know if you considered this but Ebay is a great place to get barely used guitars for good prices. I replaced an aging 1989 model Ibanez with its 2000 equivalent less than I paid in 89. Again, someone bought it thinking of learning and gave up. Their loss, my gain.
As far as brands. I like the Fender Squire series which IMO is the cheapest guitar thats worth its salt. Sure, you can get a $75 guitar but it will sound like crap. Once you learn to play, you'll notice.
I've seen Fender Squire Strats going less than $100 on ebay. $99 new at Guitar Center is even better.
Regarding amps, I like the Fender Champ which can be dirt cheap. See here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38074&item=3759522607&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW).
The other stuff you can get for almost free when Sam Ash or guitar Center has one of their blowout sales....
good luck. And rock on.
PS
For those of you guys that play what you got?
You can tell I am a product of the late 80s. My collection consists of:

00 Ibanez RG570
91 Ovation Celebrity
97 Fender P-Bass

90 Scholtz Rockman XP100 (anyone know of this one? =))
91 Alesis Quadraverb GT
91 ADA MP1 Tube Preamp
91 Peavy Bandit Combo
92 ADA Microtube 200
92 Behringer UltraEFX

I'd like to start playing, and I have a few questions. Hopefully someone here can give some help.
Is it easier to do acoustic vs. electric?
I've been looking at the Squier's. Any opinions on which is okay? (remember I'm just beginning, and don't need anything fancy)
Is the Squier SE-100 Electric Pack a good deal? Or can you recomend a good Cheap amp.
Can you bargin with GuitarCenter for lower prices?
Any recomendations on books or websites to learn from (I play piano and trumpet, so I can read music.)
Thanks!

I've never paid full price for anything at GC, from $40 effects pedals to the four $1700+ Gretsch's and Gibsons that I bought there. Just tell them that "I think I saw this one cheaper down the street at X, or on-line somewhere", and most of the salespeople will instantly knock a few bucks off to keep you in the store. They do this because the work on commission, and REALLY want you to buy from them. This deal applies to new and used gear, by the way.

the famous question. its easier to play an electric guitar. because of
that its better to learn on an acoustic. If you learn on an acoustic
and then get an electric, you'll be flyin on the electric, itll almost
feel like its not a full size guitar

It's a convenience because you can take your acoustic to many places and hear yourself play and it provides more opportunities to play and practice. the electric you need to have an amp and a power source in most cases to hear yourself play. one of the best things about an electric and an amp is 'distortion. and 'effects'. even at low volumes you can get some very sweet sounds which I've found 'make you feel you can play better" and i think you do being you are really liking the sound you are putting out and it builds confidence

I think Snoogs touched on it but if you play your acoustic for some time and then switch to the electric it feels like such a breeze to play the electric. it's a nice transition

2. I have a red Squire. My first guitar for 175.00 used at the Guitar Center in Metuchen(?). It has two 'double-wound' pickups which sound good. It was made in Japan and just recently someone was telling me that some of the Squire's made in Japan are becoming a little more valuable "for some reason" It has good "action".

Another item that I believe is associated with "good action" is it "stays in tune" real well for long periods of time

Well, you can always go up to Rondo Music in Union NJ

or www.rondomusic.net

They have sone Fender and Gibson knockoffs that are pretty sweet. I went and played a slew of them Saturday and was quite impressed with most of them (The Les Pauls weigh half a ton, like the originals even!). I prefer the Agile models to the SX brand. They are both import models that have become much better guitars in the last couple of years.

Sam Goody (of all places) has some nice Epiphones, including a Les Paul junior for 100 bucks.

www.harmony-central.com hasreview for pretty much ANY guitar you might want.

It's tough to meet that price point. $200-$250 is a little easier.
